I don’t know anyone who makes lighting 'real' as good as you do. You have a phenomenal ability to take all these styles and techniques of lighting and making them so easy to understand. Even when discussing the complex theories of light you make it simple and yet you never patronise your viewer. It always feels like you are having a one to one conversation with your viewer. Then you do it all with very real gear, speedlights and Godox lights, kit many of us have or can afford. No Profoto or Broncolor, no massively expensive modifiers, but stuff those of us with an basic studio setup will have or recognise. I don’t resent anyone having success and reinvesting that success into gear, but it’s also good to see someone with a "this is all I need" attitude. I think it’s this ability to communicate, whether it’s teaching or debating that makes your channel compulsory viewing...that and the fact you come across as one of the good guys on KZbin.

Ed Verosky I agree it’s fun watching those with top gear such as lights and Hasselblads, and there’s some great photographers who have earned that gear. However, I’m sure how that translates for the person who have just got their first 'real' camera and wants to learn how to use artificial lighting. Your tutorials make sense for that newbie right through to professionals. I’m really good at the moment thanks Ed, hope you are too.

Chuck L Definitely not, when spending that sort of money I have to ask myself do I really want or need to? I shoot mainly landscape and wildlife and only set up a studio when I'm not well enough to go out. I never, under any circumstances photograph people, except my grandchildren and headshots for the charity I give all my digital prints to. Even then the grandchildren aren’t posed studio shots, but taken on days out etc. So my only reason to buy them would be to say I have them and they wouldn’t bring anything to my photography. If I was a high end fashion or wedding photographer travelling light, I can certainly see a reason and value for using them there. Even if you’re an amateur who wants that "perfect" light I can see value in the investment. My studio work is still life taken for my own amusement. I don’t set my studio up more than a few times a year, as my health is deteriorating and the lad who used to do the physical setting it up has moved on, it’s getting fewer and fewer. I’d rather spend that sort of money on a couple of PE lenses for my Bronica. Artificial light does fascinate me, especially when there’s people like Ed to lead the way. However, I much prefer my wildlife and landscapes photography and would rather make that level of investment there. Or better still, buy myself a couple of decent enlargers to replace my 35mm B&W one I have now, I could definitely find value there.

This is IT in a nutshell! Great video Ed. I have collected so many videos that force me to over analyze, but this is really to the point. I have a similar sized main light modifyer (deep dish parabolic 36") I just noticed that since you're putting it fairly high up and pointing downward (which is mimicking the natural sun's position), that i really don't need a larger one for full body portraits because it is close to the subject yet covering her due to it's angle, not it's distance away.

Thanks a lot, Ed. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge about flash photography. Your explanation is straightforward, and the demo is very clear. The set up is relatively simple, the cost, low. The two flashes achieve do a lot. You give plenty of very good examples. I usually use one flash as the key light. The 2nd light is placed behind the subject, with or without gel. I place a reflector in front of the subject to reduce shadows. It works pretty well. I believe I learned this from one of your earlier vids. Very helpful. Thanks again.

Just play and you’ll find looks that you like. Your style just shows itself somewhere down the line. It’s not something you make, it’s something that you notice after awhile.
