It's like the Paul Piff monopoly experiment (also discussed in a Ted talk) where he had pairs of students play an obviously rigged game of monopoly where one player started out with more money and got to roll 2 dice instead of one, allowing them to move around the board faster. After the game, when the students who inevitably won were asked why they had won, they ALL talked about the smart moves they made and the strategies they employed. @_IcyCube_5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, which is why you should let your coworkers know how much you're making. You could have agreed to get a pay of 15$ an hour while someone working just as long as you doing the same work is making 16$ an hour, but because you both are afraid of telling each other what you're making, you end up getting cheated and not knowing it.
@tylerhughes54205 жыл бұрын
@@_IcyCube_ except its not cheating... if you agree to work at a wage then thats that. No one is forcing you to do it its not soviet Russia if you feel you can sell your labor for more then go do it no one is stopping you. Plus this line of thought completely ignores the biggest reason for wage dissparity which is competency and reliability. If you and i both work at the same job for a year and you show up everyday and allways do a good job but i call out and do an average job and then our reviews go around we both come up for raises and you get a dollar and i dont then is it unfair that we have a different wage? Of course this can be used to take advantage of people like only giving white employees raises simply because theyre white or men simply because theyre men without giving consideration to the quality of their work this is illegal and has serious consequences if proven to be true. But to assume that all wage disparities are results of inherit biases or discrimination is not only false but dangerous misinformation.

We didn’t know what the others sub-contractors were making but I was ok with the gamble. She was sure we were getting “cheated” so after six months of this I brought it up. It was embarrassing. I originally negotiated the contract with us being paid at the top of the industry standard. They were ok to keep paying it because we were their best sub. Our renegotiation meeting was overheard by another sub who pitched a fit. It didn’t matter that we did a better job and had no returns to fix mistakes or damage. They didn’t bring the other subs to our pay scale, nay, nay! WE got lowered to everyone else’s pay. I should have followed my instincts!!! It cost us more than $300k over the course of three years. If you’re doing good and are happy shut up and earn your pay. Too many employees waste their employers time and money complaining to their co-workers who really don’t want to hear their whining! After the Crash of ‘07-‘08 we were the last subs contract to be canceled. We stayed their best and it paid off in the end. It just would have been nice to have had the extra pile cash .💰

I did this little trick where I had a banana chip up my sleeve and I would rub my hands, clap them together and make the chip appear. I then gave it to the monkey. After doing this for a while it became an every morning ritual. When other people in the office were out of treats, the monkey understood they don't have one to give to him. Well, the first morning I showed up with no banana chip, he grabbed my hands and rubbed them together, then made my hands clap, then he checked for a banana chip. No chip. He then did the motions with his hands as if telling me to do it. I did it but still no chip. He got angry at me. He didn't understand I didn't have a chip to give him because, over time, he believed I could make one appear at will. I work in a nursing home as a CNA (Nursing assistant) and get paid slightly above minimum wage. The place I work is in desperate need of CNAs to care for the patients, so they brought in registry CNAs to fill in. These registry CNAs we’re getting between $26-$28 an hour while the regular employees get paid $16. Needless to say, we asked for equal pay in which they replied, “you agreed to your current pay when you signed the contract.” Well guess what? Many of the CNAs quit and the Nursing home was filled with registry CNAs who were not accustom to the policy while getting paid quite nicely (if they just paid their employees the same rate, they wouldn’t need registry CNAs). The place has not fully recover and their 5* rating dropped to a 2. I won’t be surprise if the place close down.

@thomasjohansson5748 Really? I find this comment disingenuous. There is no way you would have continued working there with that wide of a disparity so why would you expect others to do so. It was a management decision and they made the wrong decision and the patients suffered. I don’t exactly understand why the people getting paid more could at least do the level of work that the lower paid employees were capable of. Even if they quit and went to another job, paying exactly the same amount of money because that’s what the industry was paying that outcome would be better than staying at the same job, knowing that someone doing the same work as you were getting paid double amount of money that you were getting paid especially after asking for an increase in pay. That’s intolerable because of one’s sense of fairness has been violated.

Reminds me of how upset I was when I discovered how low my pay was at my work. I was a strange case - I have two education degrees and one in computer science, but was working near-minimum wage as a teacher aide in what we call learning support (technically a 'teacher aide', although I worked more like a teacher half the time), a job I stayed in because I felt like I was making a huge difference to high needs kids. When the union negotiated a pay rise for the teacher aides in the country, I discovered that for 7 years I had been at the literal bottom of the pay scale for teacher aides, and I nearly cried. I was overqualified to be a teacher, let alone a teacher aide, and I was getting paid essentially minimum wage. I had never even checked a 'pay scale' before because I was definitely NOT doing it for the money, but to find out that that was how my employers were prepared to treat me was just so galling. I would hear every week how I was getting through to kids in ways nobody else had, and often nobody else was able to manage the behavior of our behavior needs kids, but I guess because it was clear that nobody would do what I did for the money (there just wasn't any in it), I must be prepared to do it for the lowest possible amount they could pay me. When my father was diagnosed with MND, I just couldn't put up with their BS anymore and finally walked. Two years later I still feel cheated and angry, and have to keep reminding myself how that seven years was worth it for the kids.

Christ our passover has been sacrificed for us. 1 Corinthians 5:7. It is a sin to steal and it is a sin to forget the sabbath. It is a sin to disobey the 8th commandment and it is a sin to disobey the 4th commandment. Christ and the apostles never told us to keep sunday holy nor have a convocation on every first day of the week. By observing sunday and Christmas, the Lord will not show you nor any unrepentant sinner mercy on judgment day. I used to keep sunday, Christmas and Easter but I repented and so can you. Jesus is not the reason for the season. Satan is the reason for December 25th. Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. When the true Christ Jesus our Lord shall return, we shall reign as kings and priests if we are faithful saints. Have a blessed day and I hope to see you in the kingdom. Me at the start thinking "why does she have to wear that face guard?" I understand now
@JohnSmith-bv3bn8 жыл бұрын
I think that the results of this particular study are actually misunderstood. I would argue the monkeys recognize inequity, but not fairness. The monkey on the left surely recognizes that his cellmate is getting better food, but i wouldn't call that a conceptual grasp of fairness. Grapes are roughly five times as energy dense as a similarly sized piece of cucumber, meaning that the grape - as the scientist explains - is a higher valued currency than the cucumber. Imagine instead there are two rocks, one five times heavier than the other. The monkey on the right must lift and return the heavy rock to the human, and is rewarded with a grape. The monkey on the left lifts and returns the lighter rock, and is rewarded with a cucumber. I would wager that the left monkey would still be upset about not receiving the grape, even though the rightward monkey was compensated fairly for five times the work. These monkeys are upset about inequality of outcomes (jealousy), and would give no fucks about fairness (pay based on value provided). EDIT: One year - and a ton more responses than I thought this would attract - later, I'd revise the experiment slightly, taking a couple comments into consideration: Monkey A and Monkey B are given two rocks each; a small one and a large one, which fit through a corresponding small or large hole in the cage. Through trial and error, the Monkeys discover that passing the large rock gets them a grape, and passing the small rock gets them a cucumber. Now the Monkeys are given their rocks, but the large hole on Monkey A's cage is closed. Monkey A can only pass the small rock through and is given a cucumber, while Monkey B passes the large rock through and is given a grape. Both monkeys were rewarded FAIRLY. My (unchanged) hypothesis is that Monkey A will still be upset about the cucumber after seeing his pal get a grape, even though he knows it "costs" a large rock to get one. Ipso facto: There is a difference between fairness and equality, which the monkeys (and apparently some humans) do not understand.
@JohnSmith-bv3bn8 жыл бұрын
Cheshire CAT Scan That's exactly my point. From the monkey's perspective, they only understand that they are both performing a task, and should be rewarded equally, regardless of how valuable their respective task actually is compared with the other's. This means that the monkeys understand that they aren't being rewarded with the same thing (i.e. their outcomes are not the same), but they don't understand that they were rewarded based on value provided (i.e. fairness). Hence my conclusion: These monkeys are upset about inequality of outcomes (jealousy), and would give no fucks about fairness (pay based on value provided).

Wrong. Different values or even social norms can dictate justice or injustice. For example, a monkey fights a cop and gets shot and other monkeys cry injustice, while others see it as a result of being a monkey. Ha
@Ooopsi2 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. I have not watched the entire ted-talk and so I am not addressing the video but this comment. Everybody has an ever so slightly different view of justice (that is, within one society) and overall you would notice that the concept of justice varies greatly over the entire population. What would seem as common sense justice to one might seem as totally radical for the other, meanwhiles both would attempt at cementing their own values by relying on concepts that more or less lead to arguing in circles. In the given monkeys example though, what I assume would be common within a justice concept is that the same result is expected for the same action. Now this is hardly about justice and more about common sense really - we do not call it justice that hydrogen always burns with O2 to produce H2O. If you are relating the term justice to this sort of common sense, then yes, to some degree parts of the concept are understood to be in a certain form for everyone (that does not exempt the concept from exceptions though, and the generalized aspects of justice are almost never a point of disagreement to begin with). However, it can not be inferred from this that justice as a whole or in large is one chunk of rights and wrongs pulled off of "what we feel is correct". There's a lot more at play than this.
