Another fantastic episode. Dave- I learn so much with your narrative- you are an incredible soul. I really loved the conversations among the staff, plus the conversations between staff and monkeys. I used to think you guys didn't talk to them on purpose (so they wouldn't bond to humans?) but a part of me felt badly that noone was talking to them. Now I see that it's not true- you all do in fact talk to them and encourage them, etc. All of you are incredible and I'm, as always, so grateful that you are sharing all of your hard work and expertise with us viewers. I wish so much I could volunteer, but I'm at home looking after my daughter, who's got a lot of special needs. But one day I hope to come and lend a hand. Until then, we'll just continue to support all of you the best way we know how. Thank you so much for all that you do- and letting us be a small part of it!

YES it is adorable when they suck their fingers or thumb I use to watch another monkey channel with a baby monkey named David, he always sucked his thumb & the lady who was suppose to look after him was very mean to David she would pull his thumb out of his mouth & then scold him for sucking it, hardly got enough food to eat & he would cry, my heart couldn't take it anymore, he was such a sweet little one. I saw her give him a bottle of milk maybe once. This was in Vietnam & She dressed him up in Baby clothes & diapers & David only walked on 2 legs, I honestly have learned so much about monkeys since I started watching this channel, THANK YOU FROM CANADA

I notice a great deal more "prone on the back bottle feeding" then has been the habit of volunteers in the past, and of course is not normally how a baby suckles, as with there mother they normally are vertical while nursing an that is therefore better for babies when being bottle fed a sits easier for them to get the idea that suck, swallow and breath is the same with a nipple as with mom's teat. When laid back over a leg, lap or arm, as you might do with a human baby, you are giving them a whole new thing to learn to do to get milk and also risk them not having as much control as when they are vertical and actually aspirating small amounts of milk or having the sensation of not being able to breath with fluid in their mouth and throat and panicking and making the bottle a scary thing. And since you expect them to go back to a more normal upright position to nurse from bottles in feeding cages it would seem to be better to just continue to allow them to be in the vertical nursing position. which is natural for them, has a more conducive way to bottle feed and making it, as it should be, a happy experience for baby. And small primates are ones that tend to be a bit like turtles when placed on their backs for any reason, they start to panic and feel very exposed as the abdomen and chest are their most vulnerable areas and its instinct for them to feel that way and making the feel safe and comfortable and rewarded (with milk) for being calm in that position might lessen their instinct to protect vulnerable parts.
@waitaminute20154 жыл бұрын
I noticed the same. I wonder what has changed.
@VervetMonkey4 жыл бұрын
I think you comparing them to humans these are monkeys although primates they suckle upside down on the mothers, while climbing and running through the bush - we do what is comfortable for the baby and the position that it seems to enjoy drinking the most milk so positions will change from babby to baby year to year

So often I see bottles held to the baby's mouths which are empty, or contain so little milk that they are not tipped up far enough for any milk to reach the nipple. Why is this? Could the carers not be trained to use their heads and eyes and stop expecting babies to suck an empty teat? I know you are by far understaffed and overwhelmed, and everybody is doing the best they can, but I have seen this specific lapse from earliest times of watching videos from VMF so it is not a result of current overstretch.
