Not sure if I missed it, but also worth noting that Nikon just allowed the Tamron 150-500 into the Z mount lens lineup. Another more compact and affordable telephoto option! Nikon really just needs a more entry level camera with fast AF and they should be the go-to brand for wildlife enthusiasts.

Exactly this. The only thing putting me off of the ZF really is the body design - the same innards/processing in a competitively priced Z6 style body would be very compelling

@@mpgnz73 plenty of wildlife photographers shoot OM-1 because you get so much in such a small package. Camera market isn’t very big and every lost sale to a competitor is a big deal. So yes, Canon, Sony, Fuji, OMDS, Panny… even Leica with their SL line. All of them are competition for Nikon. They’re all competing for their slice of the pie.

I once contemplated switching brands when moving from DSLR to mirrorless, but with cameras in general it's all about buying the right tool for the right job. You ask yourself what kind of photography you do, what focal length you shoot the most, and what is your workflow. The workflow part is just as important. My workflow? Studio product photography, scale model, and landscape account for 90% of the stuff i do. I shoot 50mm a lot in studio so I'm willing to spend on a high quality or even an exotic 50mm. Canon's RF 50 choices are hot garbage in a sense you choose between a 200 or 2000 dollar lens, with the front element of the latter actually moving, sort of a semi-external focusing group which i find unacceptable in a premium prime lens. Sony has great 50mm options but the GMs focus breathe so much that it's a nuisance to my core workflow - focus stacking, which i do both for products and landscapes. So i ended up with Nikon Z, the company that is actually making the types of glass I'd actually want to use. I don't care how many lens choices a specific mount ecosystem has. More isn't necessarily better. You can give me 10 different 50mm lenses to choose from but if everyone single one of them don't suit my workflow, they are all useless. That's exactly what the Sony ecosystem is at the moment. Focus bracketing wasn't even a feature in Sony camera bodies until the A7R5.

I understand there are a lot of things that are affected by sensor sizes, but I also believe that sometimes sensor size is given too much importance. From what I've seen Micro 4/3 sensors are commonly used in wildlife settings, but what's to stop someone from using one for weddings? The G9ii came out and looks to be an amazing camera, but most people wouldn't consider it for it. Fuji is a great example of pushing boundaries of what sensors can do and the stigma that comes with sensor size. Fuji's apsc cameras are putting out very high quality images. I just think that people tend to push the FF envelope and try to push it as better than the rest when it may not be the reality

Interesting stuff! A longtime hobbyist, I've finally started to learn the difference between taking pictures and doing photography, and to use a camera in something other than Full Auto mode. Because I'm quite happy to continue using my 20-year-old 300D, along with the used 7D and 20D I recently got, I'm planning to stay in the old school and not worry about mirrorless (for now, at least). The advantage there is that there is quite a good selection of decent used glass that's available for a reasonable price as the camera companies concentrate on the new stuff.

Studio/backdrop looking great Jaron Feels a bit like Nikon is coming for m43's lunch, with all these compact teles :) not that I'm complaining, they do seem compelling. Been out photographing red deer in Derbyshire (as it's the rutting season) with a Panasonic G9 and a 100-300ii, and I've had to throw away a lot of the dawn shots (extreme low light) due to high ISO, not even Photolab could save them. One wonders which is the way to go when I upgrade in the near future - a G9 II and a brighter tele like the 200 2.8 (with/without TC), or a Nikon Z setup with the 180-600 or this new prime.

Thanks for answering my question! Really insightful answers, I think I will try the 'put the photos away for a little bit' thing next time I do some intensive shooting in the future. A lot to be said for detaching from the photos you just took (unless you are on a deadline with those photos) to help you see them a bit differently. I do a lot of writing as a day job and have been using that technique often as I find that works too (again if you can afford the time needed to let it percolate). Weirdly never thought to apply it to my photo hobby. Thanks again!

I think that the question about pixel binning was not only about quad Bayer but also about the Leica M and it's 60Mpix and the ability to reduce the pixel count of the output. This is also rumoured to appear on the Canon R5 mark II. Good thing? Bad thing? I think that if the lenses were able to resolve 60Mpix then we would have the best of both worlds but Canon lenses don't resolve that and far from it. So what is the point? Pure marketing exercise?

RF10-20 is crazy wide if not fisheye. very interested. For the 600 PF, it is hard to pick over z180-600 which is only 1/3 of the price, almost same sharpness, more versatile and same f6.3. I don't see any reason to pay 3x more for the 600 PF other than a bit lighter and smaller, but lose the ability to zoom and twice more price. hard pill to swallow on this one.

Sharpness to the corners, and when shooting wildlife that’s pretty much essential. Steve Perry did a good test of that and the 600 is clearly equally sharp right to the edge. Unlike the 180-600. If you’re shooting a small fast moving bird that you catch only in the corner of the frame, and it’s your one image, you’ll want it sharp all over. That’s where the cost lies

Credibility issues? I've been a fan of Chris and Jordan since their early days from the Camera Store. Always appreciate(d) their honesty and still love their chemistry. Now, however, I am concerned that the OM Systems sponsorship may be biasing their opinions and affecting their credibility. I recall Chris' and Jordan's (fully justified) disappointment at the OM-5 in their DPReview review. Recently, their opinion of the OM-5 seems to have improved dramatically - not a coincidence. I am wondering what will happen when OM releases a new camera or lens - will we get the unbiased, honest review that we've seen in the past? Or in a shootout between the new Panasonic G9-II versus the OM-1? Don't get me wrong - I am not trolling, I'm just expressing a legitimate concern. Once one's credibility is gone it is hard to recover, and I sincerely hope that Chris and Jordan don't lower their standards just to please a sponsor.

Jordan sounds so unenthusiastic with the OM-5 spot.

Would you guys please stop say how beautiful Idaho is. Being a native Idahoan, I understand why you say this, but would really like to not have this get out to the rest of the world. We really have way more than enough people moving here and try to change it that we don’t need more. Do me a favor and just say that Idaho is an ugly, hot, desolate high desert state. Thanks.😊

OK, this is from an admittedly cranky old radio guy, but sorry, I’ve never liked the video look of “podcast” mics. All the podcast bros with their big black mics, all working the mic so close to get that bass boost - a giant group cliché - SNORE! I actually prefer the sound of Chris and Jordan’s field videos with lavs. Oh, and on my Zooms when I use an external mic I’ve got a neat cardioid condenser mic that’s located out of the frame and still works fine in my room.

The continual fishing talk has gotten really old. This is a photography podcast. Leave the boring fishing talk at home.
