What good is getting smaller ferries that carry less freight, when freight is already at capacity currently and will only increase in demand in the years ahead. Backwards thinking sadly, from people not taking advice from the people on the ground and those who work in the sector. Isn't this supposed to be the pro business and pro economy government? Guess not.

Agree, the 'Gold Plated' plan (as Nikki called it) Labour had was future proofed requiring less support in the near future. Nationals will be a budget plan that will need constant monetary input to stay afloat. We all know that if you want quality you have to pay the big bucks.

So, instead of having two new Toyota Camry cars on the road by 2026, NZ will instead have two new Toyota Corollas on the road by 2029. Due to inflation & delays there will be a very small saving in buying the smaller cars. The net saving is estimated by AI to be around 97 cents. 😂🤣

An absolute fail Nikki no boats, you have failed to produce any thing other than to cancel the IREX project. You are trying to save face by putting the much needed port refurbishment/upgrade costs onto the local authorities. No rail enabled ferries will sever the rail system into two entities, essentially rendering the system useless. Zero out of ten....

What total incompetence, Nikki no boats does not have an absolute clue. The port facilities still need refurbishment as they are approaching end of life. Where is the costing for break of contract and will these theoretical ferries be rail enabled. If they are not the rail system will become useless. As as usual Winnie is not able to make any substantial policy other than confront and belittle the media. This is a complete failure which will cost the country dearly.

No they will not be rail enabled, NoBoats Nikki said 'Rail Freight' (5:31) enabled so containers will be off loaded onto trucks on one side that are then loaded onto the ferries for the crossing then back onto rail on the other side slowing down movement, introduce ongoing costs & additional Workplace Risk as time & cost cutting demands will put pressure on workers to work faster & longer to get the job done on tight time restraints. Remember National has already said Health & Safety is too bloated & needs to be simplified to reduce costs - they don't care about lives or long term savings - only up front costs. So not Rail Enabled

"This is a complete failure which will cost the country dearly" - Agree Labour's plan was expensive & would have got more expensive but it was a taxpayer funded "One Off' investment where Nationals will result in ongoing funding to maintain/upgrade the 'Existing Infrastructure' that is at end of life & at capacity already & the 'Private Investment' will want to gain profit from their investment so add additional costs for companies using the ferries that will be passed onto consumers increasing the costs of goods & adding to inflation.

They couldn't do that as they want to support the rich investment landlord & property flickers. I support Capital Gains tax on 'Investment Properties' & it is BS when National says it is too hard to separate 'Investment Properties' from Non-Investment Properties. BS how many properties did you sell in the last 5 years? if greater than 2 you are an Investment Properties businessperson & will get taxed. Not hard at all as these sales are all recorded as a matter of legal requirement & it is nothing to do the cross checking to see who is buying & selling.

A worg salad of bad business decisions, what is the plan? Is a slightly larger ferry good for crossing the natorious cook straight on such days? Is double handling freight a good long-term fix? Or are there costs associated with that? Are they the ferries going to be green enabled, or alternative energy source, if not why not, re the dirrection of climate change. Is there going to be mitigations set up for ferry break downs? Like support vessels at both sides, who can assist a ferry in need? As a business and tourist hub ate, there going to be adequate terminals for passengers, their children , animals, etc?

The iRex project was carefully crafted out of necessity rather than cost. The cost blowout is in the infrastructure not the boats. The cost for landslide dock development is inevitable. Because they are over due for upgrading and earthquake proofing. They also need future proofing to allow for larger rail enabled ships. The larger ships we were building had a set price and were a bargain. We will never be able to match that price again. The cancellation cost to the taxpayer for these boats is in the millions. The overall cost of Nationals ferry plan will cost the taxpayers more in the long run. For an inferior product and service. And will not be fit for purpose in the short term future.
