I purchased the Speetimer back in June and I couldn't be more happy with this purchase. The primary factor in my decision, which I had debated for some time, was specicifically the case size and wearability that Teddy mentioned in this video. I also lean toward the Seiko in the area of style just a bit, but they are both great looking watches IMO. I do love the history of this Bulova model and would love to have it in my collection just for that reason.. it is really cool, but the overall history of Seiko as well as my love for the brand helped me get over that hump in my decision making process as well. To anyone reading this I had both watches in hand on several occasions prior to my purchase, and I can honestly say imo there is no real winner between these two pieces. It all comes down to personal preference, they're about as even a comparison as two watches could ever be. I will say that owning this Seiko has been wonderful, and at this price point (or any price point really lol) it's a lovely piece to have on wrist, and outside of the lackluster loom design I have no other complaint whatsoever. I'm certain if I owned the Bulova my feelings would be the same towards it as well. If your in a position that your deciding between the watches I don't believe you will be dissapointed either way you go. 🙂

Seiko SSC911 owner - I found a local AD that price matched online at the time (April '23), for $540 as an 1 yr anniversary gift from my wife to me 😂 This is the most expensive watch I own, so take that as you will. 1. It is absolutely my favorite of my collection! Probably 75-85% wear status rn. My wrist is 6.5", so the 41mm was exactly what I was looking for. 2. I love the red accent for the chrono hand. 3. This is my first quarts watch, I am more of an automatic kind of guy. Mechanical Engineer. But I love the implementation of solar + me being lazy with a 10+ battery life horizon. 4. Aesthetically, I love the way it looks, feels, and tells the time on my wrist. What else can you ask for. I don't own any of the other watches, but as a SSC911 owner, love love love love it!

I feel ya on the mechanical preference, I've got 3 gshocks of which one are full digital but my other 5 watches are all mechanical, just picked up a lunar pilot cause I love the space faring heritage and I want something that looks like a regular watch that I can just chuck on and not have to worry about setting or anything like that, I used to scoff at the idea like "cmon it takes like a minute at the most to do" but 6 years of actually living with mechanical watches has converted me lol

I bit the bullet and bought the 'traditional' black version of the new, smaller Bulova Lunar Pilot (and paid 'only' $610 for it, full box, metal bracelet + leather strap 'n all). I'd prefer it in a 41mm but its 43mm work with my 6.9" wrist just fine. I'm super-happy with it and it's getting far more wrist time than I thought I'd be giving it... If there is one complaint I have is that's it's pretty heavy on a bracelet, but that might be due to me wearing mostly titanium watches lately...

I own the 1st edition Bulova Lunar pilot. I opted for the version with leather/NATO strap. I gave it a try as I love the Omega counterpart, but I can't justify the cost when there's another watch with similar heritage and good looks. I have a small wrist and I usually wear small watches. I decided to keep this one as it doesn't look as big as some people think, which might be related to the strap I'm using.

I went for the bulova Snoopy. Simply put I found it a lot better made than the seiko which felt "chintzy" and much lower grade materials all round. If I'm having a quartz, I want the best I can get for the money and the movement accuracy was also a no brainer. It's not as if seiko can't make good quartz movements either, some of the grand seiko movements are amazingly accurate and I hear they actually grow their own quartz crystals too so I don't know why they can't make a comparable movement to rival the one in the bulova.

@@ДаданДаданскийnot true from my experience. I have owned a Bulova precisionist 98B267 with the same 262kHz movement for two and a half years and have not had to replace the battery yet. Although I suspect if you use the chromatograph a lot that will probably drain the battery quicker but the high frequency quartz beat is not. I love my 98B267 on a blue strap as I know when I put it on in the morning it is at the correct time. From my experience setting it twice a year when daylight saving time changes, the accuracy is phenomenal, single digit seconds a year. So much so that when setting my mechanical watches I use the Bulova as the reference time. I have both of these - the Bulova Lunar Pilot (96A225) and the Seiko Speedtimer (SSC813P). I love both watches (the Bulova tends to wear large on my smaller wrists), but they're both worn according to what I'm doing and what I might need them for. For example, I tend to dress the Bulova down over the weekend (especially with the black nylon strap). The Speedtimer tends to be more a workday watch, and gets more of a regular workout. Either way, I love them both, and if you can buy one of each, I would ;)

One thing that I wish your reviews would cover is to rate how resistant the watches are for daily wear, specifically the wear resistance of the materials for the crystal, case and band. Are you able to measure the hardness of the band and case? Maybe you can team up with Project Farm KZbin channel to develop a series of tests to simulate normal or even heavy duty wear? I mean, is there anything worse than saving up for a watch, buying it, then a week later it has scratches all over it? Not good. Anyway, thanks for your video, really enjoyed it!

Spot on, balanced and accurate review. Love the deep dive on these two, thanks. I own the SSC911 and both Lunar Pilots. I have a larger wrist so I can wear both. The Bulovas are more comfortable for me, and there's nothing as close to a mechanical chronograph as the Lunar Pilot. To me it's a much classier watch. That said, the SSC911 is a super nice quartz watch, but it does scream "I'm a quartz watch." At least to me. Most of my collection is mechanical so the fact that I wear these says something--I'm really particular about what quartz watches I own and wear.

I’ve owned the SSC813 almost since release. When I picked it out of the case I had no interest in a chronograph, but I thought in person it looked great. The heft and size were just right for me,and the contrast and layout just worked for me. On an intellectual level I was more interested in the Lunar Pilot I tried on the same day, as it certainly has a more interesting history. But the flatter crystal, overall layout, etc just didn’t do it for me. I’d advise anyone to get both on the wrist, what you feel is an X factor for which you just can’t account in advance. My Seiko runs about 3.5 seconds fast per month. The large sweeping chronograph hand its great for timing patients’ heart rates at work. I wear it 5 days a week to work (physician) and the case and crystal still look new. The bracelet and clasp have scratched as expected. The 24 hour hand is quite useless. The tachymeter is accurate as tested at highway speeds. I’m very happy for the ~$530 sale price.

I have the SSC813 and the Blue smaller Lunar Pilot, and I wear the speedtimer more. I have a 19cm wrist and even then the Lunar Pilot still feels chunky, the box crystal sticking out makes it really thick and feel top heavy. I bought Seiko SSC911P1 and I was pretty sure that I don't like it cause white dial, Solar movement, size etc, but I was totally wrong it's absolutely amazing watch and can't believe it's cost around 600 dollars. The bezel dark part looks like it's painted, that against silver dial, never see anything like that, works so fine together. Braclet feels very good and quality and watch size is spot on. Only thing I hate is date window, its too deep and it's hard to read anywhere else than straight up. Still for that price point it's amazing watch. I prefer wear SSC911P1 than my Seiko MM300

I purchased the Bulova Blue/White from their website at a great deal. It’s a beautiful and functional watch but I have a few complaints. It wears much larger than i expected due to the high and wide crystal. Also, the subdials have printed indices around the OUTSIDE of the dials rather than on the subdials themselves and I can’t say that it’s a good thing. Lastly, the 1/10th second dial lacks the leading zero before the decimal point.

I really like both but I went with Seiko (SSC911 one as I did not like the "Panda" because it didn't look as good to me and the faux aged lume turned me off), Seiko means a little more to me because my dad loves the brand and it's my first foray in watch collecting, so it has a lot more meaning to me. I did get the Khaki Murph on the side for my obligatory space-related watch because it's also from my favorite movie of all time :D

It would’ve been nice to review the bracelets on both. Which wears best aside from the case and if they’re screw pins or just regular pins but I guess being under $1000 they’d be just pins I’m assuming.

Not all of the points in the table are equally important and not to same people, so certainly should never be equally weighted as here. For me, weightage would go towards case, bracelet/clasp, dial and movement, any given day. Most probably for 90% of people. If I look at just those, Bulova wins in all. The rest doesn't really matter that much (for me).

If you want to look like you have an Omega Speedmaster, get the Bulova. If you prefer more of a Rolex Daytona vibe, get the Seiko. I have a SSC991, and I really like it as a so-called beater for days that I am not wearing my Omega Seamaster Diver 300. It's comfortable, looks great and provides a lot of style for not a lot of money (love the silver dial with red hands). I thought the 800 series Speedtimer was too small, but if you're into smaller watches, then it's a good option.

I saw photos of the new speedtimer and loved it. I put it on my 17.5cm wrist in store and it looked so small on me. Today I tried the new lunar pilot in white/blue. It looked gorgeous. I will buy that one

Excellent comparison Teddy! Very timely too as I am considering both of these watches. I think I am going with Seiko SBDL085/SSC813. Deciding factors for me are the case size and the fact that I want a black/white Panda. Add the solar functionality, price at present, and the fact that I like the look, I think it is a pretty good value proposition as a daily beater.

Is it worth getting the bulova when I already have a speedmaster professional? I basically ordered both from a Black Friday sale for a steal and wondering if I should sell or keep the bulova. It would be interesting to compare and contrast with the speedmaster though.

I love the Lunar Pilot. The face depth and detail, pusher and crown design, and case shape are beautiful. Combined with the history they create a watch that feels unique and very good value for money. I have a smaller wrist and find it very comfortable and actually love the overall size on the wrist.

I bought the speedtimer in the blue dial variant. Very happy with it once id got used to ( my first chrono ) the second hand not moving like I expected, The only disap[pointment is the date window is to small and deep set so very difficult for a presbyopic 60+ yr old to see . In all its a great watch just wish date was easier to see

I went with the Bulova based on the fact I wanted a moonwatch but couldnt justify a Speedmaster. I was also able to find one for just under $300 new so I had to jump on it. Someday I'd like to get a SSC911 Speedtimer, I just cant justify the price currently.

When I got my Citizen Titanium Pro Master I decide to visit a Seiko Boutique store and ask about the Speedtimer wearing a shiny Citizen. Was given the red carpet treatment. The design of the Speedtimer Panda appealed to me but was a little shocked at the weight of the watch and realised the new titanium watch I was wearing was spoiling me. The Seiko boutique was also charging full RRP while online authorised dealers were a few hundred cheaper. Had the Speedtimer been available in titanium I could have foolishly bought it online. I also had a look at the Bulova Lunar Pilot online. For a quartz watch it was pricey. My expectations was at that price range I would want it to be Solar powered and maintenance free. I also found the newer 43mm was more expensive than the 45mm. Possibly in the coming years if the 43mm gets cheaper I could be persuaded to get one purely for the novelty value.

I bought the newer Seiko Snoopy version a few months ago. It's a beautiful well made watch but not my every day because it's just hard to read the time with white hands on a white background. The tachymeter is useless as well as the am/pm indicator.

I like the small seconds being at 6 instead of 9 on the Bulova. So many chronos put it at the 9 but i prefer the symmmetry. I also like it having a tenths and minutes subdials. Who needs to time 12 hours?

These things made me buy the Bulova: 1. Design. This watch is so beautiful! The color coordinated blue panda, buttons, and somewhat vintage rounded case. 2. No date! I hate date windows and will always lean towards a more minimalist look. 3. Bezel & crystal. The bezel us under the crystal, which means it will not get scratched. 4. The history. It is hard to beat the interesting history and with being an actual moonwatch! Either watch is nice, but I prefer the Bulova hands down.

I purchased the Bulova as my only quartz chrono (and will remain so). I was sold on the accuracy (which at the time of purchase, was said to be 15 seconds per year). I have the original Dark version. The crystal is very durable and is holding up 100%. I am getting +2.75 per month, depending on the ambient temperature, since it is not regulated for temperature. The history of this watch never crosses my mind, because this model is not mechanical.

I like the size and solar movement of the speedtimer. It makes no sense to me why Bulova came out with the new version but barely changed the size. The Seiko accuracy is more than adequate for me and I never wear a bracelet. Just bought the Speedtimer for $442 at Gnomon Watch.

I once saw a chronograph that had a minute timer on the main dial in addition to the second timer. It was easy to read and I thought a great setup. The minute timer hand was thin like the second hand but had a triangle on the end to distinguish it. Does anyone make a chronograph like that today?

When I bought my Lunar Pilot, the Speedtimer didn’t exist. If I had to choose, I would still go with the Bulova. I might be a little biased, but just as Teddy mentioned, the heritage and the movement win it for me and in my opinion should be weighted more. If these were mechanical watches, differences in accuracy is worth thousands of dollars (especially ability to measure tenths of a second). I know these are quartz, but it’s still pushing the status quo quartz operation to the next level. Secondly, Seiko has amazing heritage as a brand, but the Lunar Pilot has a very specific heritage that only one other watch brand lays claim to. Love them both, but the Lunar Pilot wins this comparison in my opinion.
