Are you familiar with split primary palettes? Probably one of my favorite color theory things I've learned ever. They're super useful for being able to mix an incredible range of colors, and especially good for being able to mix ideal secondaries! I don't know what W&N's primaries set is like, but if given the chance to get 6 colors, I think choosing a split primary palette is the way to go! Sorry if you already know what I'm talking about, but a split primary palette is basically where you have a warm and a cool version of each primary color. There's some interesting color theory behind these choices, but I think I'm at risk of being obnoxious by offering it unsolicited lol. So let's leave it there. :D

@@ikea_bear1791 okay, can do! So if you consider a palette of 3 primaries and you want to mix an orange, perhaps you'll have a cool red like alizarin crimson and a warm yellow like cadmium yellow in your palette. If you want that orange to be nice and vibrant and warm, unfortunately the color you'll get will NOT be that. This comes down to what I call "color math" but I don't know what it's actually called tbh. Alizarin crimson, being a cool red, will have a touch of blue to it. That carries over when you try to mix the red with yellow. You'll get orange, but with the addition of a bit of blue. If you recall other color theory, orange and blue are complementary colors, and therefore mixing them together will neutralize and create a brown, gray, or sometimes black, depending on the mixture. The fact that there is a little bit of blue in your orange mixture means that you will not get a very vibrant orange trying to mix alizarin crimson and cadmium yellow, no matter the ratio you're using, because that little bit of blue will interact with the orange and dull it down a little. This is where a split primary palette comes in, because with the split primary palette you will not only have a cool red such as alizarin crimson, but you will also have a warm red like a cadmium red, available! So if you want to mix that vibrant orange, you can use the warm red instead and avoid any hint of blue sneaking in and neutralizing it. But! The split primary will also assure that for all of your secondary colors, you are able to mix one that doesn't have hints of its complement coming in to dull it down. So you still have an alizarin crimson in the palette to mix a violet with, and you will also have a warm blue to use (maybe ultramarine), rather than being stuck with something like phthalo blue which is a cool blue (tending more towards green = there's some yellow involved). If you only happened to have a phthalo blue in your palette, the violet you'd end up mixing would be more neutral and dull than maybe you were hoping for! I hope that's a good explanation. I think it could probably benefit from some visual aids, but anyone let me know if you have further questions~

@@kierusekai lovely explanation, thank you!!✨ I’m looking forward to putting it to practice with my watercolors and playing around with colors. I definitely need to build a better palette, and I finally feel like I have a great starting point. Thanks again :)

I love that you did two pieces to fairly test out these paints! I always get in the heaspsace of "one and done" if I'm trying anything new, whether it be a technique or color scheme. I love both pieces, by the way!

I Florida fan girl when you use reference places/animals/plants from the area. Bok Tower is so beautiful and peaceful, it's definately one of my favorite botanical gardens in the area. I worked with the rare plant conservation manager recently and got a tour of the rare plant green house. They have some amazing plant species and conduct interesting research like the affect of Gopher Tortoise seed digestion on the germination of Ziziphus celata. Nice job capturing the beauty of the gardens; it inspires me to go back and do some art!

@@Lilstarnerd Same! Apparently the room inside is like a time capsule from around the turn of the century when the carillonneur would have residency. There's a steel staircase which was imported from Pensilvania when they were big on steel production. There's also a library room full of sheet music...how it was described to me gave me very much Beauty and the Beast vibes.

You can order the single Holbein tubes on the Blick site. Same with Jackson's, Jerry's Artarama, and others. Jerry's Artarama has them in store as well (at least they do at the one near me, so check on their site if they have it in store near you). If you just can't find it in any store near you then order them off their sites! I order all the time and I haven't had any issues yet.😊😊

I would not recommend the primary set in this brand, they’re a bit murky in mixes, which sort of defeats the purpose. I love the quinacridone magenta for mixing purples with Ultramarine, the winsor blue is a really good phthalo blue, I LOVE the linden green and naples yellow deep, and the winsor red is nice and vibrant…. I really want to try the venetian red, though, it looks gorgeous!

With gouache, your paint should be the consistency of cream when trying to use it opaquely.
