Another delicious and less expensive meaty addition instead of the ham hock, is some nice smoky Kielbasa cut into dice.

Jane my husband and I moved from Victoria British Columbia Canada to Newfoundland Canada 17 months ago. Growing up in Victoria I always had access to a ham hock from either the grocery store or butcher shop. Now in Newfoundland I can’t find ham hocks. So to make my split pea soup I might get a small cottage roll. Or after a ham save the bone with some meat.

I love soup, could eat it every day. I made mushroom soup yesterday, first time ever, was stuck for ideas, happened to walk into the supermarket as two big punnets of mushrooms had been reduced. I really like the look of your chunky leek and potato soup, especially with the bacon on top. I always spend ages blending mine, but that would be so much easier!

I have been all about soup lately. I've made soup-as-meals (stuffed pepper soup, white chili, and taco soup) and side soups (leek and cauliflower, curried butternut squash, and broccoli cheese). We still have three kinds of leftovers in the fridge (lunch or dinner for the next few days) and now I want to make lentil soup...

Ham hocks have gone up here in the UK. For soups and things like stuffed jacket potatoes and lardons I've started using smoked cooking bacon as its only £1.00 for 500gms and yes it does need a bit of prep but if I'm cooking I've generally got the time to prep it and freeze the rest for a busy day. We have sweet potato and smoked bacon soup on this weeks menu.❤

I too use a lot of cooking bacon. I sort through the packets and try and pick a pack with extra thick slices. When I open the pack I take out all the large pieces to roast as ham steaks, all the other bits I cut up and use in things like soups or instead of lardons.

I make a couple of different lentil soups. One of them is similar to yours. The other is a curried lentil soup with root vegetables (potatoes, carrots & rutabaga/swedes/yellow turnip) and chicken apple sausage. Your potato leek soup is similar to the chowders we make in New England. For those that don't know, chowders usually include clams, or white fish (like cod or haddock) or salmon or shrimp or a combination. We also make corn chowder which uses corn (fresh, frozen or canned) instead of any kind of fish. Maine (USA) chowder uses milk but Massachusetts chowder uses cream. I live in a coastal area where fish markets sell "chowder fish" (several varieties of fish small pieces) for $3.99/lb. This is less than half the price of full size fish fillets.

Great video Jane you never fail us. Although I make soup the year round once the nights start to draw in and the weather changes I make soup more often. I have it for lunch every day, I also always have a portion in the fridge that I can warm up in the microwave if I come in cold and wet. Nothing more warming. Make soup allows me to use up all the veggies that are in the bottom of the fridge, any odds and ends. When preparing veg I save all the storks and outer leaves from green , cauliflower, broccoli to add to soups. All my veg peelings are washed and kept to make stock. All water that has had veg cooked in it is saved to add as the stock for my soups. Nothing goes to waste in my house.
