I was between flights in the Atlanta airport, thinking Iwas ina handicap bathroom. The toilet was too low and I couldn’t get up. I was afraid of missing my flight. So I remember seeing a housekeeper lady doing her job. I called out to her and explained to her that I was in need of her help. She reached for your hands and pulled me up. I was so thankful that she was so kind to me.(I am elderly and having severe spinal stenosis.)

Why would they have such a toilet in a handicapped bathroom? Good thing the housekeeper was there.

I am 75 and obese, and have always avoided public toilets and low waiting room chairs. I now use the disabled bathrooms, which usually have a side bar, and only sit in chairs,if low, which have arms. Most modern furniture is too low, and leather is inclined to be slippery.Bar stools are out. I have had a taller toilet installed in my home, and it is appreciated by my visitors.

Glad that I found this channel! To accommodate my weight and need for a higher toilet, I ordered a riser for my toilet from Amazon. It is plastic and fits right over the raised toilet seat. It is sturdy plastic with an opening in the front. It costs less than $30.00 and has been a lifesaver. I just another one for my second bathroom. It is really safe and handy. Weight limit is over 325 pounds.

This is a brilliant comment! I am in the UK as well and had one meeting with a physiotherapist and the progress was checked over the phone in 2021. I use a wheelchair for long distances (lupus and OA) and would love to just be able to walk to the bus stop with a cane. I feel that we will learn lots of helpful info on this channel. I have started doing some of the exercises on here. Another YT channel appeared in my feed actually featured a mention of this channel. He is also a doctor of PT and his channel is El Paso Manual Physical Therapy. This is giving me hope when I had lost it. Best of luck to you on your journey! 🙂

The real problem is getting down on the low toilets, it’s so scary especially if there’s no counter to help & you feel like you are going to fall & break the toilet or something else like your legs or back😩🥴

YES! I got down on a low toilet, not paying attn & then I went, "Uh, oH, how am I gonna get up from here?" I had been practicing before & I closed my eyes & went for it... My kegs slipped out from under me & Fell back down in the toilet, luckily landed on the sweet spot & didn't break anything. i managed to pull myself up with a bar to my left! Harrowing experience 😱... But I think this lady has the right idea & is very clarifying in how to move! Thank you God for this your Angel🙏

@@AlamarOne I agree with that, but what I was getting at is that sometimes you go into a washroom & don’t notice that the toilet is low & you just go to sit down. I can say to you that is one of the scariest things I’ve experienced as a disabled person with a cane that doesn’t always help me. I was lucky a few times, but there have been at least 2 times where I either fell or just caught myself on the edge of the toilet. I don’t get the reason for low toilets in the first place except for decor🤦🏻‍♀️🥴
@powerWithinUs4055
@powerWithinUs4055 5 ай бұрын
Agreed, happens to me too. If one were to fall in a public bathroom, gross goes without saying, but you could be there over a three day weekend. A cane could go flying out of reach. We need Plan B They need feedback. Let the building owner know. If a hotel, let them have it. No excuse anymore. Comfort height commodes should be standard. Try carrying a case or a purse that you can hang on the door hook. A web belt with a d-ring would permit you to pull up. Msybe a clothes hanger. Reinforce with gorilla tape. That tape is so strong, it wouldn’t snap. Might have a hard time going through security…..this, oh, it’s for the bathroom stall.

It’s a conscious decision….I'd been grimacing…this is gonna hurt. No…..say, this is done. Something I just tried and it’s impressive. I got garden kneeling pads. Not as wide as a placement, same length, two inches thick. Think I’m on to something, will buy more. Need underneath, rubberized shelf paper strip to keep from slipping on wood floors. When I stand, I can feel the impression my foot makes in the foam. That is what is being referred to the body. Ouch.

I can tell you, what, I learned as a physically disabled person with a lot of things going on, I learned that what makes it harder to get up is if, their is not enough space, the more space that is around me, the easier it is to get up! Also, I try to sit at higher levels when, all possible,I got myself a chair that sits on a pedestal and, another thing, ( aka / I can’t sit straight up, I mostly have to sit at a 40 degree angle and, same thing when, I sleep) and, if, I travel to my medical appointments because, they are a bit farther away, I have to ride in a van. I avoid trying to create farther damage to my back and, body! Then, I got a standing walker, one the walker is close to my height and, you are actually standing up straight and, you are physically walking and you can go up and down sidewalks with physical ease and, you are getting more physical activity and, one cause, you are looking up and, you don’t have to watch every step your taking and, can pay more attention to your surroundings you can get from one place to another! And, on a standing walker you have a set of bars right there in the back of the seat, so, when, I am sitting in a regular chair those set of bars are at eye level, which, also helps a blot of time avoid needing a extra hand. And, with that it’s helped ease a lot of my back pain! I can tell you, those traditional walkers over time can do some serious damage to the body over time.All these steps, I have taken to some degree has improved and, course their were other factors involved but, because, I am also trying to stay upon keeping that 50lbs off that, I lost more of it this past year and half and, trying to get back to being as physically more active as my health allows. So,yes one there is always hope to get there and, if people can and, are willing to invest what they can to stay on top of their health as much as they possibly can and, what works for them.

I actually bought a " right height " Toilet, because it seems ridiculous thst they EVER made toilets so low to begin with. I avoid low seating , ..I dont find it comfortable, and I purposely purchase furnishings that sit higher, or I use a cushion ( or large pillow) on seating if needed,to fix the " height issue ". I really find your Channel so so helpful, due to injuries on the same side of my body ( the right side, 4 different times over the years ) and how much you have helped , in regards to less pain, more movement and overall feeling better than I have felt in 2 years.... " Thank you" is not really sufficient.. Blessings ~

I have limited mobility and walk with a four-wheeled walker. Arthritis in my knees means that I cannot sit on low chairs and toilets, and I certainly cannot stand up from them. I am gradually getting stronger by doing my rehab exercises. In the meantime I found a product which is a game changer for me. It is called the Free2Go Rollator. I have looked at the walkers that I have inherited…..it wouldn’t take much to create a seat with an appropriately sized hole. Bedside commodes are unsightly. Not widely available here, but Brit’s have attractive upholstered chairs that don’t give away their use, looks like an ample fining room upholstered chair. We need to be insistent. Provide comfort sized -they call it, commodes. Building managers are getting away with it. It was a special order up until recently, now, anyplace with fixtures has them.

This all sounds great but if your knees don’t bend like mine and after fracturing both shoulders they don’t work either. I have a 17 inch toilet with a 4 inch riser under it. I refuse to do stairs since I fell down them and fractured my shoulder. My theory is every doctors office needs those hip high chairs in them for people that can’t get off low furniture. If I have to go to the doctor I have to take three cushions that I have to put in the chair and it is still hard. I basically stay home where I know I have a chair and A toilet I can get on and off from.

I find it easier if I sit on the edge, legs about 12" apart, flat on the floor, stick my bottom back, reach my arms forward and down as if diving into a pool. The weight of my arms brings my body forward, then i concentrate on pushing up with my heel. To sit down again, bottom out, knees bent, arms forward & down so that you fold down rather than drop. If you do it correctly your knees wont hurt and you can sit and stand slowly and controlled

My worst experience was at the dentist and I HAD TO GO NOW. I was on the way out and ran into the first restroom, it did say personnel only. Could not wait and entered. Low low toilet, no grab bars. I could not get up. Had to call for help. Finally someone came and tried to open the door. Several people tried with anything they had. Most people had already left, no locksmith was answering . Ended up calling the fire department. Lights and sirens. Had to take the locks out. Finally was helped up by a cute fireman. Beet red face. Walked past the checkout and told her I would call later and pay over the phone.

Just happened to a co worker. She was, essentially, trapped. Big heavy doors, no one heard her, she was trapped in a stall. Could have been a three day weekend with nobody in the building. There are devices that allow a woman to urinate while standing. People use for hiking or public restrooms. Small,enough to carry in a pocketbook. Learn to void in a cup, then pour in the toilet. Disagreeable, but so is having to be rescued. Not sure it would work….maybe impossible with many toilets, but could maybe swivel, turn backwards and use the piping mechanism to hold on to, to lift off. Or the back wall. If it’s of any consolation, that’s why stalls are open on the bottom to begin with.

Pricey at $120 , but tax deductible as a walker or crutches would be. It has resale value, you could sell it.

I've found that the more expensive a restaurant is, the lower the toilets are. Also hospital toilets are really low to accommodate wheel chair transfers, but at least they have grab bars. I don't understand why grab bars aren't mandatory in every stall. Cause if you lose your balance and fall, there is no way anyone can get in, cause you're blocking the stall door.

I have OA badly to the extent that I have really bad balance issues , so I think to do things as you suggest difficult. I feel I may maybe lost a lot of muscle power in the top of my legs. One of my knees feels it keeps popping out , but straight back in again, but the selling and pain after is increable. Hence I feel a little scared to move away from my comet zone for the fear of falling over. I do use a stick , frame daily and scooter for longer distance. I will try what you suggest but with a little hesitation I must say, I am having a steroid injection in one knee fingers x Wednesday. Just recently had heart surgery , so got to speak to someone re stopping anti coag meds first I was informed in a letter Saturday, so hop I can get hold of someone today. Thanks for the advice anyway.

I had hip surgery nine months ago before that. I always squatted on the toilet now I can’t do that anymore or so far I can’t my left side isn’t strong enough. I’ve been doing weight-bearing exercises and some strength training and still I can’t squat on the toilet, I would really like to get back to squatting instead of sitting..

I have the opposite problem. Everything is too high for me. My legs ache after sitting on a toilet that is too high and only the tips of my toes can touch the floor. Chairs are the same. I need a footstool and can only use one at home. I still use the booster step that I bought to help my children when they were babies, they are in their late forties now.

I prefer a low toilet. It’s a more natural position for elimination. If getting up is difficult, install support bars. One can also use a frame or walker placed backwards behind to form arm rests. I don’t know about that swinging arms with weights to get up. I’m afraid I’d keep going flat on my face!

If you can get your grandkids to find other places where all the REAL info on Boron by any of its 7 names have been hi dden.( 1/8 teaspoon per 100 pounds of person, per day was the human trials). Find and learn. I am down from 9 pain to 0 or 1. Strength up. 3 bad falls on ice, no breaks, small bruising. All friends, fall is a break each time. After surgery it cuts bone healing time in half, and soft tissue the same.😊. Farma discovered dude had 1000 copycats all done with arth rites repair. Never to buy their solution again. So they jailed him. Now called poison on websites. It was thick in food before pe st cide. So your grandma didn't break or any of this. The best vid is the doc teaching coworkers. I watched through 35 things it fixes. The other vids are good also, if they find the info for you. You can also buy pills on line 30$. Or powder in laundry isle IF there are no extra things added, 7$. You must find name with jackass.

What I ?dread is getting down and up from high toilets and chairs, and having my legs dangle painfully while I sit on them. I am a short person with 2 bad knees, so a lot of seating is too high for me. I seldom encounter seating that is too low for me. I had to pay extra to buy a rolling walker designed for people who are both short and wide. At the time, the only one that I could find was the Nova Mini Mack. It has been a big help. ❤😊

If you are fitted with a Pacemakrer, as I am, standing up quickly can make you feel giddy and then fall over. I not get up from a chair or othdr low seat slowly. Once I'm standing, I stay there for a few swecods to let my pulse catch up.

I got stuck in airport RR - I was recoverinv from broken leg (used cane) and had right arm in cast. Chose handicapped stall.... Lots of space. But functionally....only grabrail was right hand (the one in a cast). Almost fell reaching toilet. Getting up was worse. I couldnt. Seat not much higher than normal. I crawled out under door - after pushing my suitcase under. That 'handicapped' only meant for someone in wheelchair, who could get up and down. Not REAL handicaps. Two grab rails would be good, but stall was too wide to reach across. Very embarassing, awkward, and painful.

There is no way in Hades I could ever do that second movement. I cannot get up stairs that are higher than 4-5". And my left hip is so far gone that I cannot put any weight on it independently from a walker or, at the very least, a cane. It is very painful for my legs to be extended further apart than a regular step.

Doesn’t work when the knees are are gone can’t hold knee replacements, crushed ankle and foot on same side as a broken hip. I got the muscle proper just not the bones to go with it. Or standing quickly you get lightheaded.

Thank you but that green chair isn’t a low chair. In a low chair or (sofa) getting up puts all your weight on your knees as you rise up which is very painful following TKR or have a severe arthritis, unfortunately bouncing up is not safe for everyone. I’ll continue to carry my booster cushion 😁
@arthritisadventure
@arthritisadventure 6 ай бұрын
Correct, the green chair isn’t low but it’s important to build the strength and power with a higher chair before moving to a lower surface.
