That was an outstanding job by everyone, especially Phoenix controllers in busy rush hour! Keep in mind the scope only displays both subject aircraft, would you like an untrimmed version with all the radar and traffic in the area? It takes a lot of time, so all the support for the idea is welcome. AAL1038 video --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6mcdnujrZd_jtEsi=B3SSCxZutdJ2S4sY

Untrimmed version, yes please! I understand that it's a lot of work, but it really puts in stark relief that the controllers can't just focus on the emergency (or two!). They still have to maintain control of the whole rest of the airspace and the planes there, with planes arriving, departing, looking for IFR clearance, and seeking information to see if they have to divert.

I realize it takes time for you to produce these videos. But since I'm not a content creator I have no idea of what it takes to do it. And since I'm not an air traffic controller or pilot I can only sense a small part of what they go through in stressful situations. It sounded like the emergency responders were under quite a bit of stress too. Situational awareness in this case means being aware of several simultaneous situations, and being prepared. If you're willing and when you can I'd really appreciate the untrimmed story of the entire situation. But take your time. It's not "Super Time Sensitive" for me. Thanks Victor for what you do. And thanks in advance for what you will do.

At the very least I'd love if next time you made a video with both emergencies together. To get at least a bit of a feel for how it was. Would be easier to understand, too; I watched the other video first and didn't understand why there is an emergency aircraft already.

OMG I remember this happening but didn't even know it at the time! I'm a dispatcher and had a flight coming into PHX, they asked me why PHX was holding, I looked and saw about 5 or so flights in holding patterns for seemingly no reason. No weather, no flow change. Makes complete sense now.

This is likely the best ATC/pilot interaction (AA2006) that I've heard in a while. They are both friendly and flexible. Of course the slats isn't as big of a deal as some other emergencies, but I think given their professionalism they would have been very similar in a more pressing matter. Kudos all around.

Yeah, AA 1038 lost oil pressure and volume, ATC dealing with two simultaneous emergencies (AA 2006 and AA 1038) during rush hour, and then the emergency ground crews... A lot going on and handled very professionally by everyone involved. I hope Victor will make an untrimmed version that also includes the other nearby aircraft.

@@trilight3597 You really do not train for such situations, you apply yourself, to make accurate decisions with the info you have. Of course now, with radar simulations, you can set up a multiple emergency situation, but that is it, a simulation. If you recall the controller did ask the flight with the engine problem how bad it was, and the pilot replied he needed to get back quick. The other flight, with the slat problem was not as critical. It was fortunate that PHX had multiple runways and could accommodate both, if both had to immediately land.

I was a bit intrigued as to why they required the longest runway, but then argued to stay on the 2nd longest runway instead of actually using the longest runway as they asked about in the first place.

LDA on 08 is 10,591 feet and LDA on 07L is 10,300, which is only 2.75% less. Since they already had the approach for 07L programmed and briefed, there was no reason to change it for an additional 291 feet, if the FMS said they didn't need it for a no-slats landing. Plus, the airplane landing on 08 reported loss of oil pressure. If there was a leak it could have contaminated the runway surface. There was also a small but non-zero chance of the first emergency aircraft not being able to clear the runway, rendering it unusable.
@CapStar362
@CapStar362 6 ай бұрын
@@johnopalko5223 and yet here we see, wasn't the case. Trust me i get the hindsight. but ATC already knew the runway was clear, they were vectoring him into 8L and should have had 8L loaded in whether active or secondary to swap over to. 1038 according to the brief i read, shut down #2 as it was running dry, after the LP Warning, 1038 ( in the other video and in 2 other videos i watched about this, eventually said - our number 2 has lost oil quantity as well, we shut it down ) So, 1038's engine had no oil left by the time it landed, and they actually vacated the runway rather quickly, before 2006 was even on final for 7L. In fact if you watch ADSB replays or some of the other videos.... ATC Spaced out 2006 long enough to give the Fire Brigade a chance to make it over to 7L, 1038 was already on the ramp by that time. There was more than ample enough time to flip to 8L on the FMS. ------------- its just intriguing to me, 2006 requested the longest runway, and even while ATC told them, yes, we will get you that, argued to stay on 7L when they were actively being vectored to 8L. ^ ^ ^ This is my only talking point here. they wanted the longest runway, were told they would get the longest runway, then argued to get a shorter runway. ------------- this is all in the ATC recordings. the runway was closed specifically for 1038 and 2006 simultaneously. it was reopened only minutes after 2006 landed and both runways resumed normal ops.
