Your videos are like a blast from the past for me, I am 67 now and remember fragments of doing what you are doing. I had to change the pistons on a Honda 175 twin, late 60s model. Fishing the dropped cam chain from the crankcase with a coat hanger was no fun.

I like to get my hands dirty and do my own work on engines when possible. My first job on leaving school was for a car restoration company. I would be given engines to strip and find reusable parts, which I would then clean by bead blasting. I gave it up after a few months. The other guys took advantage of my youth and used me as a tea boy and sent me to the cake shop at break times. I felt it was beneath me.

100% agree. After having (4) 4-stroke bikes, when I purhased my 07 CR 125 last month....working on the engine and entire bike is such a breeze! I would HIGHLY recommend anyone who is looking to get into MX riding...go with a 2-stroke to start, you can save so much money on servicing the bike yourself! Plus, they are just plain fun to ride!

With MX being so expensive nowadays a lot of people are switching back to 2 strokes. I bought one simply because they're so much fun!

You should do a restoration of a classic mx bike or two stroke street bike .... suzuki gt., Tm 125 or 250 , would be awesome... !
@TheButlerNZ3 жыл бұрын
2.26 ... OR.... you could just push an old bolt through the dowel pin...(preferably a snug fit with no thread in the pin area) then put the vice grips on the pin, crushing it against the bolt.. and give it a tap... THIS method works on blind pins where you don't have access to the other side of the hole (in my experience more than 50% of dowel pins are on the blind side) In most cases this will free the pin without damaging it... and if it fails.. the pin is still in enough of a good condition to JUST LEAVE IT IN THE HEAD as 95% of the time you don't need to remove them for any reason. I have only done this with my own bikes, I work on Water Blasters but you never need to remove the 1 or 2 that are in the Honda/Chonda motors attached on the very odd occasion they last longer than the pump. I have had my motors apart on my DT175, SL125, XT250A, IT175k, IT200s, KX250, but luckily the 97 and 99 YZ motors were so bullet proof I only had to clean the power valves and visibly inspect the pistons. The IT probably got the most attention as the 1st gear would delaminate, I added a 2nd down port and polished the intake changing to Boysen reeds.

If you're splitting the cases just to part it out than splitting them from the Right Hand Side is OK but not how it's recommended. If you're splitting the cases to install a new crank (to quickly get back out riding) than splitting from the Left Hand Side is recommended, is quicker and makes it easier (you can leave many parts like the trans, shift forks and shift drum together and bolted in) throw in some new main bearings and crank and your back on the track. I cringed when you hit that shift drum bolt with a impact (while the transmission was still together) it's usually only torqued to 16ft/lb so loosening it with a 3/8 ratchet is easy enough and could prevent potential damage.

When you see these 2-stroke bikes that are meant for racing and notice that their insides are almost identical to road going 2-strokes you wonder why some service intervals are so tight and theres no mention on road bikes about 10 or 15hour use piston changes even if you bash on them :D I know its because of the assumed type of use, so with right gearing you should be able to do an easy 5-10 000km run on a kx85 if you dont race it against moped guys regularly but who likes to ride a dirtbike like a granny? :) My main point is, for example husqvarna sms125, 26-28hp and 10 000km~ piston change, ktm sx125 28-30hp 10-15 hour piston change
