I love watching your videos. We saved a 3.5-year-old Shepenois (German Shepherd/ Belgian Malinois) from a house at the end of November 2022 (it's now Feb 2023). He had no training, doesn't know how to walk on a leash, was left outside with no shelter, was not fed enough/not quality food... I knew he was a puller from the night we picked him up, he pulled me everywhere, lunging at people walking about and other animals, till I managed to get him to the car. I felt bad, thinking I couldn't possibly take him for a walk... But I am determined not to fail him! I started looking for help immediately! I watch your videos and feel empowered. I do not take him on walks at all at the moment, but we are working on engagement through play (watched your vid on how to play!) and obedience training - heel, sit stay etc. We are working on the game where he goes around a pole and then comes for a tug toy 😊! We are with him when he is in the house (no crate as we don't have the space, but he sleeps in our small kitchen with the door closed), and I put him outside in our secure back garden for a while during the day (so I can get stuff done) and especially if we go out (might be a couple of times a week. I work from home.) We have a slip collar and use positive and negative reinforcement. I am looking forward to the day I can take him for a walk, not be pulled around, for him not to lunge at dogs and cats and pedestrians. He broke my finger lunging for a cat in our enclosed front yard last week, but his engagement is better. He 'checks in' more now. I am still determined, although it has slowed me down. Thank you!

Starting today, if I’m not directly interacting with him as you say, he’ll be crated. I’m giving this a 2 week experiment & I’m looking forward to some positive changes- keep you posted!! Thanks for your straight up no-nonsense common sense approach 👍🏼 love the energy!!

Not so , each trainer has their own little tweaks and approaches . Every little detail that I can pick up gives me just that little more versatility . I am not a pro trainer , I am just a dog guy . Had dogs all my adult life , all have been off leash dogs . But I really just started studying dogs and Training since I retired . I have always had a thing for dogs tho

I have a malinois..she came from the county Shelter. She was 6 months old when I got her. She was a STRAY...believe that or not, but she is every inch a malinois. I have trained dogs since 1965 I am 81years old. The shelter didn't want to give her to me (OH, MY AGE...I pointed out that it is AGE DISCRIMINATION). Her name is liesel (German for Gift of God) and she truly is. But since I live in the country and have two acres, she never sees another dog and everything I have is delivered. She is perfect other than when anyone comes to the door, Liesel is fine I can tell her to go "nite nite" and she pops right in her crate...but I DON'T want to have to put her in her crate every time someone comes to the door. She goes to her "place" cot when told "Place" but we have a problem with "stay". She is good when I tell her to stay when I am going out and she has to "stay" until I call her to "come" since every time she doesn't we come right back in the house and DO IT AGAIN and she has to stay until I call her to come. She has a shock collar but I don't like that name because I just use the beep and buzz. The buzz tells her come and lay down and the beep just calls her. She does both perfectly...I have been willing to PAY BIG MONEY to have her trained by the local K-9 but they say they only do PUPPIES. To me that is saying we SELL PUPPIES TRAINED but don't really train dogs. Well, I don't have a NEW BABY PUPPY and when I bred Ger. Shepherds many years ago...yeah, a puppy is a snap to train when they don't have any bad habits. I don't have a clue as to what she went through as a "stray". She nips a lot, but she doesn't "bite". She got me once, but it was my fault I was teasing her with a toy and she reads me like a book...I swear she understands every word I say and I have never been able to say that about a dog. What I really want is not just a house trained puppy, but a functional working dog...I did it for the AF. but then I would go to the shelter and get a new puppy right out of a litter...I was planning on that when I went to the shelter this time...but SHE PICKED ME. I walked in the room and she went nuts. They said "wow" she never did that before. At a good 6 months old she was already 45 pounds. How does she spend her other 22/23 hours when we are not either outside or actively training...she is pestering me with her 50 toys and balls. She throws the ball under the desk and then whines so I am trained with a stick to go knock the ball out from under the desk where she can't reach it. I know it is a game and I can or can't play. MOST OF THE TIME I DO. I get the feeling at times she is spoiled. But she is my sixth child and I see little difference in Children training and dog training. A dog to me is up to a two year old or three year old. I have never had a "dumb" dog. There are a few problems I would like to get ironed out and that is something that I don't need a whole program for and we tried the "class" and that was a disaster and a total waste of a couple of hundred dollars.

I needed this video, the lifestyle part is a tricky thing to get down. Especially when living in an apartment. I've been afraid of crate training cause of barking and neighbors. I still stuck with it and glad I did. I struggle with having him not free roam the house. I want to give him the freedom but also know he will tear shit up. I'm going to have him on a leash and combine that with the crate. Is there something us apartment folk can do to still have a happy dog even tho we don't have a yard? I also wanted to ask about corrections in order to give the dog more freedom sooner. I would like to reach the point of him not biting furniture and countersurfing faster. In your opinion is it better to keep him on leash until he reaches a point where he loses interest or should aversive methods be used to be able to give him freeroam sooner rather than waiting it out?

@@kevleafy it's not like that, it's just that at the moment he was destroying things in the house, he's too untrained at this point to be left unattended. That's why crating while you're not watching him isn't a bad idea, it doesn't mean that he spends his entire life in there, or that we aren't working on house rules. It's more about him not being able to practise bad behaviors, I guess you could even call it setting your dog up for success. I am able to let him freeroam more now than a couple weeks back. Still have a lot of work to do.

My Mals are never in a crate. I spend 90% of the time working outside while the dogs play. Last night was the first night with a 5 month old rescue. He slept on the bed next to my cat and was totally relaxed. I picked him because he exudes confidence. Every puppy is different so choose carefully. I can't believe people buy puppies without testing them.

Andy, please help! I have a 1yr 6 month Belgian Malinois. I don’t want to fail him. But he’s overreactive with dogs and human beings getting too closed. I try to train him but seems hard for him to enjoy it I’ve tried different treats, ball don’t know what to do. Also I love with my sister and she has 4 small dogs who are in no training and always barking at everything seems like he’s picking up their habits but not sure. He’s very timid, everyone says it’s his nerves but not sure. He did get attacked by a unleashed husky on his walk. I work a 9-5 job he does free roam because he stays with my mom inside the house since it be 100+ outside that will come to a change because he is kennel train. Any suggestion? Please advise Andy! @@meenanair6029 its going to take some time but it is all about engagement. Getting your dog to focus on YOU and not the other dogs. When I walk my dog… the moment dog bark at him, he will immediately look to me and I pay! So he does not react to them😎. Engagement can be a slow process so start small like in the living room a reward for looking at you. Then go out to backyard and do same. Eventually you can build up to those situations that he explodes. Dont put him in the environment to rehearse it until you have great engagement.

Hey Andy, I love all your videos. My 3 yr old Belgian that I've had for 4 months was ppd trained for 3 months. Get him home..... barking... turning in circles like a maniac in his 25 ft dog run.... we broke down and introduced a shock collar. He is much better but now almost looks depressed. He is never free roaming. But if I keep him in the crate (his house), he barks and digs. Then I correct but he bares his teeth at me. I have also learned through error that he cannot stretch his legs in the backyard with children. I have 6 and he cannot be around them too long. The woman I got him from did not mention he couldn't be around kids or I wouldn't have bought him. I love my dog and I'm trying my best.

Following Andy’s principles, train your dog using high engagement and avoid any possible scenarios where another dog may be present until you have an incredible heel, sit, down, stay, come. When you have the basics, find the right time and place to train your dog outside with minimal distractions. Then slowly introduce your dog to distractions, making sure that your dog is engaged with you during the distraction. (Your dog can eat out of your hand as cars, people and dogs walk past)
