Today's video I revisit Adam Jones and his incredible kitchen garden for an informal chat about all things gardening. Think the growing season, tips for new gardeners, plans for next year, winter in the garden, and a lot more. Make a cup of tea, and enjoy this little conversation we captured last August.

Huw - So what are you going to do over winter? Adam - Over the winter I am going to be planning a lot more, I am going to be thinking about where I am going to plant things in the garden. I didn’t plan much last year, I was busy and forgot the most important time Huw - and me, I thought let's put the potatoes here and the carrots over there Adam - Exactly the same thing! You know, it looks pretty, a bit of everything (it works!) but it works, so I think I’m going to be more organized, well I say I’m going to be more organized, but lets see, but I am going to try and be more organized. I want to look more into seed suppliers, to see what companies and nurseries grow similarly to me, get to know more gardeners, I haven’t been very good this year, Huw, with going to see people's gardens. It’s important to do - you know! Huw - It’s because you had to put in such an effort to keep everything watered! Adam - Well yeah that’s it (no time, sorry!) What about you? What are you thinking? Huw - Yeah... more planning I think, relaxing too, it has been a very busy year with work, and I am very happy with that, but yeah to have a bit of time for myself. Oh and edit this video! Adam - Oh yeah of course because this comes out in spring? Huw - Well sometime Adam - Relaxing you said - don’t think you can do that Huw - Well, yeah relaxing to me can be work haha. But I am looking forward because the energy in winter is very different, I really like the long dark nights. Adam - Yeah and me! Do you ever feel that people ask you as a gardener what your favourite time of year is? And I always say winter, and they’re like ‘what?!’. Because in the summer everything is happening, but I like for that reason, time to just take a breather. Huw - Yeah my summer holidays are in January! Adam - Exactly! January is a nice month to just cook and do stuff I always say that, and December is probably the only month of the year I do barely anything in the garden. Huw - Nope, I just walk away Adam - Yeah leave it alone really. But the winter will be busy but nice (it will - I am looking forward) and me!

As I sit here during a grey, wintery day in Canada, only dreaming of warmer days ahead (still too early to sow any seeds, even under lights), I soaked my soul by binge watching a bunch of Huw's Inspiring Garden series of videos. This one is my favourite, simply because of the easy conversation between the 2 of you. The Welsh at the end was a delightful bonus. I knew not a word you said but it was like music.

It was nice to be revisiting your garden, Adam. Everything looked so lush! Can I ask you... You once said you use the chicken as composters... Do you remove the compost in autumn and start anew? or how else do you avoid vermin in winter? I would think that would be a lovely place for them to forage (as long as the velociraptors don't find them).

Hi guys, what a great contribution to youtube. as an Australian, I didn't understand a word of your Welsh but for some reason it made me cry. It was so lovely. I'm from Tasmania, and I'm proud of where I'm from (there's lot's of unholy agriculture but 1/3 of this state is World Heritage) ... and I really appreciated seeing someone else (2 white guys, none then less) being proud of their heritage. We live in an age where it is important to have an understanding of what privilege having a white UK background gives, but also acknowledging that you too have a history and that we too come from somewhere that is rightly proud of it's achievements through countless generations, and that this is an equally valid contribution to our identity, without detracting from the consequences of colonialism. And it goes without saying, both your gardens are both amazing. Currently I live in the inner city of Melbourne, but my dream is to be able replicate what you both have. I hope that you both know that what you do and say here is important and inspires people like me to make a big change, both now in how I shop, and later in how I grow!!! (please understand my my comment not as a political stance, but I feel that I needed to clarify so that I didn't offend or appear indifferent, because I am neither of those things). and I just want to hear more Welsh - I think it's a beautiful language. It's only 3 generations ago that my family lived in the Scottish highlands and the Ilse of Skye, and I know nothing about them or their lives. My best friend, who recently passed, was a first generation immigrant from Northern Ireland. It's vlogs like this one that give people like me a little insight to our pre-Australian heritage. But most of all .. please keep sharing your garden, because that doesn't make me cry, it makes me smile, gives he hope and inspires me with a purpose.

Alan, what a thoughtful comment. I’m in California where summer and water issues are a constant challenge. But I watch and love the British garden shows because of the people. They are my people, and we share so much. When I visited Australia, I marveled every day at the European adaptation to that place and its possibilities. Loved Melbourne and Bright, where I stayed. All of us are lucky in our options ,and with the knowledge of our heritage are even more enriched. Best of luck with your future!

@@patgentry7268 Hi Pat. Thanks for your comment. Hang in there, water challenges are also a thing in Australia, so i feel you. I don't know what kind of garden you have ,but just do your best. ... that's all we can do. I have a funny feeling that your garden is more lush than mine. If I keep watching Huw I might end up with something slightly respectable one day. LOL Anyway I'm glad someone understood what I was trying to say without being controversial or political. Home and heritage are important for some of us, and thank you Huw for sharing that with us, it was special, it was kind and it was important.

What a lovely talk! My ancestors were Welsh so I think I inherited the understanding of the accents. Zero worries on my end there! I really enjoyed the topics, particularly in letting the garden do what it needs to do and not fighting it. I am in a zone 6 in America and we had a terrible heat wave in June and July. If it wasn't for shade cloths, most of my gardens (and a very pale me) wouldn't have made it through! We normally have a killing frost in mid October and it didn't come until early December. What an odd year all around!

Slugs - I'm in North Carolina, US, 7b and we have long hot humid summers (for about 3 months it is 90-100 Fahrenheit). The tomatoes can cook on the vine in late summer. Slugs have family reunions here. I start the season by washing out cat tins and fill them 3/4 full of cheap beer (called a beer trap) and lay them on the ground in the garden before I even plant in spring. I put them down every 10-15 feet. Early in spring, I get a lot of dead slugs, but I keep them filled all summer. At night the little lushes crawl in and drown - a happy death. It's like a frat boy party. I rarely have any slug damage, but I have to dump out the dead bodies and keep the tins filled 2-3 times a week. I'm sure the lady at Costco thinks I have a drinking problem as I buy cases that I keep out in the garden. Ironic as I don't even drink beer. I love your show and especially love this episode.

That was so awesome, what a way to start a new year. Thank you, Huw I enjoy your shows and I really enjoy Adam I did not realize he had his own show also. So, I liked it his garden is so beautiful. I have watched the 1st one several times on your channel. I live in the SW of Oregon USA, and we are going to have another atmospheric river for the next week again and the snow in the mts and wind omg they have been between 30 to 60 mph. I live in the beautiful Rogue River Valley, and we usually do not have this high of winds. Just thankful for the rain and snow so many forest fires the last few years. We lost 2300 homes it will be 3 years ago in September. So, I never complain about the rain I just sigh when it's 2 weeks in a row. Any way just wanted to let you know that I have been enjoying your shows for years now. Have a blessed week ahead.

Adam is as comfortable at conversing on camera as any I have seen. Huw is obviously wonderful but Adam steals the show. I'd watch a show of him interviewing people.

It also obviously takes two to have a conversation and Huw did a really good job of letting Adam run with the ball. Especially since you could tell at points he wanted to geek out and jump in. The Welsh was wo derful two. About as good of a video of two friends chatting as you can get.

Noswaith dda! I coincidentally stumbled upon Adam's channel last week while looking for video's about the Welsh language (and started learning Welsh straigt away: Dw i'n mwynhau gweithio yn yr ardd hefyd!). I'm happy to see that you two know each other and have so much fun talking about your passion. I'm definitely going to watch the previous video too. Good luck to you both.

"....F sharp." 🤣🤣🤣 I enjoyed this chat so thoroughly. This will be just my second year with a big garden (in the northeastern states), and honestly almost everything I've learned has been from you, Huw. I was drawn to your chanel because my beloved grandfather was from Wales and your filmography is deliciously gorgeous, and I stayed for the thorough education. I can't imagine not gardening, it is so deeply a part of who I've become and brings a feeling I can't describe. Thank you for sharing what you do!

Aussie vege garden tips to protect during the 38 to 42 degree summer: - build a structure that you can roll shade cloth over during the hottest time. - mulch mulch and more mulch - wetting agents - changing the time of sowing dependent on expected weather eg later winter each year means extended growing season and vice versa.

Thank you for saying it! It was my second or third year at the allotment and I was really fed up, even thinking about giving my plot away, as my crops were close to none. While on my first year I had an abundance of veggies on much smaller plot than the one I have now! It was so encouraging and motivating, and this year I have lost all my energy with it... I'm going to give it a go though this year again to see if it's better weather wise. Let's keep our hopes! ✨
