CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Erin (Julia Roberts) defends her research and puts Theresa (Veanne Cox) in her place by displaying an impressive amount of knowledge on the clients.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Julia Roberts stars in this legal drama based on the true story of a woman who helped win the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit. Erin Brockovich (Roberts) is a single mother of three who, after losing a personal injury lawsuit, asks her lawyer, Ed Masry (Albert Finney), if he can help her find a job. Ed gives her work as a file clerk in his office, and she runs across some information on a little-known case filed against Pacific Gas and Electric. Erin begins digging into the particulars of the case, convinced that the facts simply don't add up, and persuades Ed to allow her to do further research; in time, she discovers a systematic cover-up of the industrial poisoning of a city's water supply, which threatens the health of the entire community. Erin Brockovich was directed by Steven Soderbergh; Julia Roberts earned a $20 million payday for her work on the film, the highest salary paid to a female film star up to that time.

People misunderstand this scene. The files they're looking at are her personal notes taken from her home. She did not know they were going to be in this meeting. They are not the actual case files. She didn't keep the numbers on the files because she is dyslexic. I'm sure if she had been asked ahead of this meeting, or at the very least asked without a condescending tone, she would've added them to her notes.

What I love, just as much as Julia's epic performance is everyone else's reaction. Her bosses awkward glance to his boss, who is at first curious and then impressed to the other lady, who gets more and more embarrassed and looks for support but doesn't get it. The interaction by everyone else is amazingly well done.
@ApartmentKing66

Well, that was just one of 600. I'm sure she retained a lot of info, some people can do that, but you can't tell me that Miss Brocko memorized everything about 600 people. But even if she did, which I highly doubt, who the hell's got time to sit and listen to the other 599? If Brocko knew the phone number of the people in that one file, it should've been in the file. That lady in the suit may have been a tad presumptuous, but I can see why she was. If I were her, I would've asked why Miss Brocko didn't write it down instead of sitting there acting like a smug know-it-all. Remember, this is a movie made to make Erin Brockovich look like some sort of altruistic saint. People act like the screenplay is a court transcript of what she did, who she interacted with and how, and it wasn't. Whoever thinks so is gullible and disconnected from reality.

She was ambushed, then criticized for work they never did.

@@beachstreet101 here's the thing: even though she gathered the info, those were her not HER files. As an employee of the firm, all data gathered while on the job is not hers. Everything belongs to the firm downto the notepads and pens she used to write down those names. That is what you agree to when you sign onto a job. That is what Erin agreed to when she signed onto a job. That's nothing new. Companies retain the rights to all things created/gathered when in employ. So while it was shady of them to get them from her house, they technically shouldn't have _been_ at her house in the first place.

Erin Brokovich really needs to get over herself in this scene. So.... she's proud of the fact that she can memorize numbers? It is an impressive talent, certainly. But, what if something happened to her? What if she wasn't available and they needed the information that was stored in her head? Way to leave your team mates high and dry. The portrayal of the hierarchies in a law firm is so spot on - the mid level trying to gain territory by tearing others down, the top level affording the luxury to being impressed by the underdog. And showing it. This isn’t just an awesome guy having made partner for being smart and dedicated that now sees potential (in Erin). It S also someone who conditions his subordinates like the lady in the ugly shoes - he needs her to do the dirty work and try to screw people like Erin over, like taking the case from them. He also needs to keep his pitbulls in their place to work even harder - which he can also achieve by making her feel worthless through showing his respect for the underdog. It s a cruel version of divide and rule. Brilliantly written - this is how big lawfirms work. At almost every step of the way you re manipulated by a partner. They wouldn’t be where they are if they weren’t master manipulators

It is sharpened for symbolic reasons: the real Erin knew a lot of stuff by heart (since she was dyslecic, it was her strategy) and really knew the people behind the numbers. The other lawyer people in a lot of cases did not take her seriously, feeling very superior and being condescending, judging her by the way she looked pr by writing errors in the files. But she was a damn pro.

@@Alusnovalotus Have you ever even met a lawyer? I work in a law firm and the attorneys are always swamped with work and phone calls, etc. They put a lot of faith in the people that work for them, legal assistants and paralegals, to have everything prepared accordingly. If a component is missing, something as crucial as contact information can be extremely frustrating and set a case back, something an attorney will have to go back to later. That's like working at a shoe store, and you go into the back to get something, but nothing is stocked properly. Or working at a food place and some ingredients for the food are missing. No lawyers I've ever met have been condescending or rude. Certainly I'm there to work for them, not the other way around, but they don't lord that over me as "I'm better than you" because they know I play a valuable role in their day to day work too. So if I'm missing something and didn't do my job properly, I should expect to be called out, and go back to do it properly, especially if they asked nicely. I certainly wouldn't tell them their shoes are ugly and get an attitude. I worked with an Erin type person at the firm and she loved doing things her own way, not the firms, and argued about it all the time. She didn't last long.

That is true, but there is a way to do and say things. She felt that Erin did not belong and she felt as though she was not going to even try to relate or even ask Erin any questions. She was in charge and that was it. Sometimes it is a good thing to stand up for yourself when no one else will. The lawyer knows that they are taking over a case that they, mostly Erin, has spent over a year working on. She did not ask Erin if she knew what was missing or anything. She assumed that by the way she was dressed and the fact she knew she wasn't a real lawyer. Her tone and facial expressions told everything. It all could have been handled a different way. Erin has done all the work. They could have at least asked for her imput and her boss could have stood up for her too. Erin was never by any means professional but she knew her job.
