The Currie Cup trophy is 123 years old. And was given to South Africa when the British and Irish Lions first toured there. I think the Calcutta Cup is almost 150.

As a Frenchman, the bouclier de Brennus ( top 14 trophy ) sits comfortably on the top of it all. Sure some other trophies are more prestigious, but there's something unique in seeing all these guys slapping a piece of wood in excitement. As an aside, winning that trophy, the objective of it is nicknamed 'touch the piece of wood'. Many think it was named after a Gall warlord who ransacked Rome way back when, but nope, it's just the name of the guy who first designed, who happened to have the same name as a Gall warlord, Brennus. Great comparison with the sumo trophy aka the emperor's cup, that thing is ginormous Good to know you're back in China Mark, can't wait to see more vlogs of you there, enjoy yourself!

The Currie Cup is a timeless trophy, with all the history in it! One trophy that also looked great, was the Super 14 trophy back in the day, it almost looked like the Super Bowl trophy.

I am South African so it wil sound bias but nothing comes close to the Currie Cup imo. Especially the way it looks when you drink from it. Had the privilege to also actually hold the trophy.

Quite frankly the Calcutta cup is clearly head, shoulders and torso above all the others not only aesthetically being stylish and classy in design but it is also the oldest. Of course most of the rest are really just an after thought being just a poor attempts to mimic and commemorate games between sides when the Calcutta Cup was not only to mark a game between two sides but the very start of International Rugby. No contest whatsoever.

If you are interested in big cups that you can drink plenty of beer from, then you might be interested in The Sam Maguire Cup, which is a GAA trophy awarded to the winner of The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. It is based on the Ardagh Chalice, a 9th-century Gaelic chalice and which is similar to the Derrynaflan Chalice, another 9th-century Gaelic chalice. So there is history behind the design too. Alternatively, you might prefer The Liam MacCarthy Cup, which is another GAA trophy. This time awarded to the winners of The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship. As with The Sam Maguire Cup, it has historical connections. Its design is based on a medieval Irish drinking vessel called a mether, which is a communal or 'Friendship' drinking vessel from the Celtic tradition. However, The Liam MacCarthy Cup is not as big as The Sam Maguire Cup, so it won't hold as much beer for your celebrations.

I love the scheduling of the Ranfurly Shield, a changeover can completely change the complexion of a team's season. I do wish the larger unions would go back to defending it pre-season against the lower tier teams, I remember Auckland of the early 90s (Fitzpatrick, Jones etc) coming to Buller (NZs smallest union) and giving us a shot

On other trophies you may like, The Rugby Europe Championship Trophy is a cup, although I think The Rugby Europe Super Cup may be more to your liking, as it is a big cup. I think The Antim Cup (between Georgia and Romania) is an interesting design but it is quite small and won't hold much beer. There are other cups within the Rugby Europe Championship but I am not too sure about them.

Calcutta Cup Trophy is the most well crafted and beautiful trophy on the planet. The oldest trophy only reserved for the 2 oldest rugby teams. it`s a bit special.

I've never lived In Queensland, but the Hospital Cup is a solid, elegant, antiquarian looking cup. A slimmer version of the Bledisloe with the shape and portions of the Webb Ellis. Like something out of Harry Potter. Been competed for since 1899.

The World Cup trophy looked really silly when hoisted aloft by Martin Johnson back in the day. My favourite is the six nations as for us in the northern hemisphere it means the most. Good list tho!

The Escott Shield is a trophy that is normally contested in the Suva Rugby Competition. From what i heard ( someone can correct me on this) it is the twin to the Ranfury Shield. Made from the same log and almost identical.

It's still quite funny that the Webb Ellis trophy wasn't designed for rugby but bought in an antique shop in London at the last minute by an IRB (as they were known then) employee. It does add some gravitas though that it is much older than the competition itself, so it's well over 100 years old rather than 37 like the comp is. It's quite funny looking back how disorganised the 1987 comp was, the opening game was on a Friday afternoon so most fans were at work and a dog was running on the pitch when John Kirwan scored his famous length of the field try. 🤣

I agree with you, Bledislow cup is the bomb just on its size and shape! I love the Currie cup having grown up watching it but have to admit it might be marmite, people will either hate it's aesthetics or love it. Webb Ellis, Calcutta and Rugby Championship cups/trophies are beautiful pieces of art. ❤

The bledisloe cup 100% number 1. Ranfuly shield is right up there to.. Not just for the team playing for the province but for the province itself. I remember down in southland the Shield travelled all around the clubs and schools in southland. Was pretty cool to be able to get a pic with it.

Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland. Honestly, I think both codes lack really nice-looking big trophies they just are not up to much. I would say if I had to pick the my top 3 would be 1 : Currie Cup 2 : Champions Cup 3 : Calcutta Cup. The only reason the Calcutta Cup gets in there is it stands out because it is unusual looking in terms of trophies I have been. I would say The Cincinnati Open tennis turnement has the best trophie in world sport. I would say in general tennis & golf have the best-looking trophies & am a fan of nether sport but it looks like both sports spend a hell of a lot on trophies & and their designs to me in comparison to other sports. One thing I will say is I have yet to see a great looking World Cuo trophie in any sport they always look far to small to me regardless of whether it is football ( soccer ) or both rugby codes. I would definitely say both codes have trophy problems they just dont look very good at all. Keep safe.

I believe it's the third oldest on the list. The Calcutta Cup is the first rugby trophy from 1872, Triple Crown is 1883, Currie Cup is 1892. Although the Home/5/6 Nations is very old they only started giving a trophy for winning the table in the 1990s.

Not a fan of the “historizing” style of the Big Bill. It’s the most prestigious one of them all, but then Eben Etzebrth holds it and it looks like a spirit shot. It also pretends to be about a century older, than it actually is. Neither am I a fan of the ultra modern cups/trophies. The Super Rugby one takes the crown as absolutely positively hideous. I’ve always found the Currie Cup the best looking. It’s traditional, but not excessively baroque and ornamental, it’s interestingly asymmetrical a true work of an artist. My second favorite is the Calcutta Cup, it’s beautiful, artistic and traditional, one of the oldest sports trophies in existence.
