The roads at the tip of Manhattan are from the original founding of the city. The reason they curve and look weird is likely because that's where the land originally ended. Lots of Manhattan (especially the tip) has been built on reclaimed land. So the roads would curve with the original edge, and then over time the island got expanded so more roads were added.
@Khotetsu

Boston is the same way, the roads are so bad because each set followed the coastline as they filled in the land.

The roads in the financial district are less of a grid because they're old: that's where the original Dutch colony of New Amsterdam was. Some of the streets still follow the course of the those old tracks laid out within the walls of the colony. Wall Street follows the course of the old town walls, and Water Street runs along the quay (the site of the colony is now ringed with reclaimed land). It's worth thinking about this when finalising the road layout down there: where were the town walls? Where were the gates? The quays? The fort? That'll give you the start and end points of the oldest roads down there.

Manhattan has a TON of mixed-use development with ground level commercial topped by residential. Also a TOOOOOOOOOOON of brownstones/row houses. That could help you get a good mix of buildings and zoning types. Also, you'll obviously need to think about as subway when building anything inspired by New York. Looking forward to how this proceeds.

This build is intense, so much to uncover. Good thing you've laid the bones out and they look good to start. The detailing part and figuring out where the central station and train tracks will lay.... that's another story. As for the name of Fake Manhattan, Algonquin is taken, thanks GTA IV, so I thought about Franklin Island (Ben Franklin), since the he's on our highest currency bill, and Fake Manhattan had the highest population.

By the time the grid plan was implemented, the roads in Lower Manhattan were already in place and influenced by the original Dutch colony. Lower Manhattan was already densely populated and developed, making it difficult to impose a grid system. Additionally, land ownership was a deterrent; when the city was initially developing, physical features such as streams or hills often defined properties. Additionally, Wall Street is named Wall Street because there was a literal wall. The wall was built to protect the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam from the British attacks. You can still see the original wood posts embedded in the streets of Wall Street.

One thing to keep in mind, are the relatively lower buildings in middle Manhattan. There used to be a lake there, South of central park. (collect pond) And as such, the area is marshy and prone to flooding. The most infamous example of this, was "the tombs". An egyptian revival-style prison known for it's dark and damp interior.

Historically, Midtown (specifically the Garment District) was home to various industries; the West Side next to it was home to many rail-marine freight yards, where loads of freight cars were shipped across the Hudson river from New Jersey. So think the area around Hells Kitchen, where Hudson Yards is. The New York Central built an at-grade freight line on 10th and 11th Avenues, all the way down to Chambers Street way back in the 1850s. But in the early 1900s, there were discussions to elevating the line, so they re-built it as the elevated High Line.

Since Manhattan's name comes from the Lenape language, choosing a name rooted in this language would be a fitting tribute. For example, the Lenape word Ahpookwe (meaning 'to trade or barter') could be Anglicized as Ahpookway. Similarly, Nahitun translates to 'to buy or trade for,' and Winkwéak, which refers to 'trade or commerce,' could be adapted as Winkway.

coming back to say that, having built NY-inspired cities (in CS1), you're nailing what always seemed surprisingly difficult: getting the general sweep of an iconic Manhattan-esque skyline. especially in the closing cinematics, the Downtown-to-Midtown silhouette is 🔥 as far as names go, a couple ideas came to mind: - playing on currency-related names, maybe borrow from NY's Dutch colonial past; before the Euro (going wayyyy back), the Dutch Guilder or Florin might link NY's real-world history to a very Dollarton tie-in - maybe not the city/island as a whole, but specific, smaller districts/areas, etc. - similarly, "twee" ("tway") is "two," "twintig" is "twenty," so one/the other/some combination of the two - echoing others' suggestions about Lenape/-related words, to honor the region's even-earlier history/Indigenous communities and for transit (*when* it's time!), it could be cool to embrace the city's old elevated trains. I'm thinking of the High Line on the west side-but still operational-as a model, along with still-used elevated lines in Queens (7, N/W) and the Bronx (1, 4/5 trains), how they're integrated into the city's fabric, etc. there's also the Metro North line on Manhattan's east side, which becomes elevated between Grand Central and the Harlem-125th Street Station. I'm completely with you on not loving below-ground subways in CS, but you've got great bones to build out an above-ground/elevated network already!

6:10 Access to the ports. The trade center was on Broadway/Broad St, which is in the middle of the island, so they curved the roads towards the water which had the ports. This allowed for easier facilitation of goods 12:02 Broadway is famously diagonal from the rest of the grid and has theaters, so it makes sense that it would actually go into the grid and into the theater district rather than end down at 14th st

The history of New York - and especially the top of Manhattan - is that it was originally built as a colony, that the Dutch very loosely planned and was basically laid out as the Dutch settled more and more. Would be great if, a general rule, zones tried to utilize all surrounding streets evenly, and that maximum lot depth was automatically decided the block median. So that for instance with a 4x8, the lot depth would automatically be 2, 6x12 it would be 3 and so on... Of course, this wouldn't be perfect either, because sometimes we'd want to override this and have larger buildings placed - But I'd much rather be forced to plop large buildings once in a while than all the little ones all the time.

New Guilderdam, a reference to New Amsterdam and the money used in the Dutch republic, including New Amsterdam at the time: the Guilder. (17th century). Much of New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Connecticut were historically part of the Dutch colony of New Netherlands. Located to the south of the New England colony. A lot of places still have Dutch (related) names. Some well-known names include; Harlem, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Coney Island, Flushing, Wall Street, Broad Way, Bushwick, the Bronx, the Battery, Greenwich Village, Hempstead, Yonkers, Dutch street, Nassau street and many more. The Dutch history of New York City (and state) is very extensive. This different influence from the Dutch other than from the British one is partly why the city is so different compared to any other US city. “The island at the centre of the world” by Russell Shorto is a very good and interesting book about this forgotten history of the US.

I wouldn't be NY if it doesn't have mountains of garbage piled or bedbug infested furniture on the sidewalks! I also lived in the upper east side on 72nd and 2nd, there is a man notorious for jogging in the "Borat" swimsuit except metallic silver with sweatbands to match. I lived in Brooklyn too, Ditmas Park, and I worked all over the city, I had between a 1.5 hour to 2 hour commute on the subway everyday, transferring at Coney Island. They frequently close stations down for line repairs and have "shuttle bus" transfers between the closed stations. The R and parts of the D were still destroyed from the hurricane when I moved out in 2015. I know there are assets from CS1 for Hudson Yards so it would be cool to see that again or the naval yard in Brooklyn because it's a huge artists space in the old buildings, really interesting place. Some of the streets by Wall St. are pedestrian streets instead of for cars. Prospect Park has free summer concerts and Green-Wood Cemetery is the highest land elevation in the city, they would make nice points of interest. The Bronx Zoo, there's one on Staten Island, Redhook is also art centric and ESPECIALLY the Gowanus Canal, you could plop some industry. It's pretty industrial looking around Coney Island on the D. Oh also the unmarked white van that is the Ikea shuttle outside Borough Hall that you REALLY hope is the Ikea van lol. If you need some info, hmu! I worked in public and charter schools all over the city, in every borough!

Wow, i cant even imagine doing something like this. Great job. Some things I noticed that are different. Columbus circle is not in the right spot. It should be on the left lower corner of Central Park. Broadway is not straightin midtown around time square and south to around the Flat Iron building. It angles. Its all the other avenues that run north south that are straight. So Broadway actually crosses some of these avenues on an angle. So thats why you ran into the problem of sort of making Park Avenue look like its Broadway. Park avenue ends at Grand Central Station. Then contiues north after the station. Park av and Madison dont go all the way down the finacial district. Madison starts at around 23 st. Forgot where Park, and Lexington starts. Oh and thats 5th ave along the east side of the park. But this just goes to show how complicated this build is and you defintly got the flavor of it right. And not complaining. Just pointing out some of the things that are different. Great job.

21:30 The fact that those streets are both classified as highways and have 65 mile an hour speed limits, bruh nah, that one on the right is short and super urban and would still likely be 25-30 and the one that goes up the ramp, it probably goes to an actual highway, but that section at the intersection there would likely be 25, there is Vision Zero anyway in New York. The rest of the highway might be 45-55, but it would start going down from 35 to 25 as you approach that intersection and the urban area/highway end.

Have you made this map available on PDX Mods. I'd love to work on the Brooklyn side starting with my hood.

Rome isn’t built in one day, but manhattan is in one episode. I love to see where the series is going but don’t forget to finish Jersey city

I think a name based on Dutch currency would be appropriate, considering New York's Dutch history. The currency in the Netherlands was the Dutch Guilder (florin) before the Euro. The Dutch frugality and commercial skill would, in my opinion, give a name in this category more significance and depth. My proposals are the names of the coins but Americanised, like they did with boroughs around New York for Dutch cities (Haarlem → Harlem, Breukelen → Brooklyn, Staateneiland → Staten Island) So Manhattan would have to become an overarching name, I propose the name of the currency "(New) Florin" or "(New) Guilder", either that or the (correct) name for the Manhattoe (namesake of Manhattan) people: Weckquaesgeek →Wechasgeek, because it's easier to pronounce, how American (🦅). With boroughs consisting of names of Dutch Guilder coins, how the Dollar has quarters, dimes etc. Here are some of my proposals of neighbourhood names: Stuiver (ƒ 0.05) → Stuyver Dubbeltje (ƒ 0.10) → Doubleton Kwartje (ƒ 0.25) → Quart Guilder (ƒ 1.00) → Guylder Piek (ƒ 1.00, alternative) → Peek Rijsdaalder (ƒ 2.50) → Ryksdale Riks (ƒ 2.50, alternative) → Ricks Knaak (ƒ 2.50, alternative) → Knake Vijfje (ƒ 5.00) → Fyve I hope you consider using some of these as I would think they would fit nicely, and feel free to mess around with Americanization (🦅)

For the name, I feel like something like Main Dollar Ten would follow the pronunciation of Manhattan if you wanted something literal, though I think there's some more clever suggestions in the comments. As for the demand for low density housing, you could create some townships alongside the highway past the bridge for temporary relief that can always be upzoned later or whatever. It would also give you more space for elementary schools and industrial zoning.

You should listen to the 99% Invisible Podcast - there is a series called "The Power Broker" which basically outines how Manhattan's layout came to be and all the politics involved in the eventual layout. It's fascinating.
