Due to the lack of infrastructure in Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua, tourism costs are very expensive. In Indonesia, only the islands of Java, Bali and Lombok have normal tourism costs.

The experience in Java is different than the other islands because it is well populated from end to end so intra island travel is easy and plentiful. Sulawesi is a bit more challenging because of the topology. Central Sulawesi is so difficult to traverse that early maps by Europeans show it as multiple islands. What locals do in Sulawesi, more than long distance busses, is ferries and planes to get around the same island. Also, since the population density is much less, there is less need for city to city travel options. Hope you can come back, Sulawesi is truly my happy place... 😁

And I should say, even if travel takes a bit more effort, anyone who loves eco travel or water recreation will find it quite worth it. Scuba, snorkel, surf, etc. Are top notch and the flora and fauna are distinct and very different, Google Wallace line for more on that... Many Indonesians, however, make the trip to Makassar as a foodie destination and relaxation by the shore...

Thanks for sharing Luke and Naomi. I really understand your situation, and fully agree with your decision to go back to Java. Many problems could easily be overcome if you could eliminate the language barrier. I think 3 months intensive practice with Duo Lingo would give significant impact. Obviously, planning is a must, especially when traveling to unknown locations like some parts of Sulawesi that not quite used to see foreign visitor. I suggest you to explore southern part of every Java provinces, starting from Ujung Kulon in Banten, Palabuhan Ratu and Pangandaran in West Java, Kebumen in Central Java, and Pacitan and Southern Malang in East Java. I am sure that this place will open up new perspective for you, it also rarely covered by other foreign vlogger, so I think it will give you substantial view as well. Lastly, I hope you to visit my hometown in West Sumatra, particularly Pariaman and Payakumbuh city, both known for it's delicious cuisine. Regards

So sorry for the unconvenience that you have in Sulawesi. The people in Indonesia have different characteristic in each islands. So, preparation is a must if you want to go to other islands outside Java and Bali. It is better if you have local friends or connections so you Will be save to travel around. Just like you did in Bogor or Solo. Keep safe and happy travel.

There are many things that can be explored in East Java. For example, in Malang Regency, you can go to Lawang town, visit Lawang Market, try staying at the Niagara Hotel (a hotel with original colonial ambience and a bit of "horror" comment), or see tea processing at the Wonosari tea plantation. then Malang city, interesting to walk around. Don't forget kota Batu / Batu town, there are lots of interesting local tourist spots there. ie, Museum Angkot / transport museum is very interesting. and of course going to mt. Bromo, not just traveling to the mountain but walking around the surrounding villages, seeing culture of the people, very interesting. and much more BTW, always be carefull, not everyone is good

I suggest you to visit Mount Bromo to see the beautiful sunrise and crater. This is a once in a lifetime experience. Perhaps you could forget those unpleasant experience in Sulawesi by seeing the scenery in Bromo. You can go there directly from the city of Surabaya or Malang, with an affordable local travel agent

While you are now in Surabaya again, then you can explore the Greater Malang, or Madura Island. Madura Island is a bit challenging, but there are buses going to Sumenep that you can see the Royal Palace of Sumenep. Malang, at southward of Surabaya, is also worthed to visit. The food, the city of Malang, the Batu town, the Jatim Park, or going more southward to the beach of South Malang.

As someone wo rise & born in sulawesi i can relate what happen to you guys. Tbh, it's hard to find kind drivers, especially for you two as foreigners easly get scam like this, even me as the local tho 🤣. Next time if you wanna go to sulawesi either in west, north, center, south, southeast or gorontalo. Make sure you have local friends, as your guide. I mean there is hurdle when you try backpackering in sulawesi. Not your typical java island mostly save and travel friendly. You better take prevention before things like this happen again.

Well ...we never know what will going on tomorrow or next day ...expect and unexpect thing could or couldnt happend ... Face it wise-ly ... Put it as experiences ....learn about. Every region has own ethnic style tradition language relogion and habbit ... Indonesia has it .. Plenty colours ... 400 ethnic... 700 dialect ... 18 000 island ... You can imagine they style habbit so many variaty... Hopefully you still enjoying the stay in our land .. Anything put it as experiences ... Best way to go to toraja is that u got to rent a car for couple of days, and drove the car by your self to toraja...its alot easier and much cheaper...and lost it is quiet a nice view ...or quiet nice scinery along the way to toraja or negeri di atas awan...or hunung nona...

I'm sorry for what happened. Well.. welcome back to Java. There are so many beautiful places to explore in Java while preparing your next trip to other island. If you visit West Bandung, please come to curug malela as known as "little Niagara". You can try ride extreme ojek.. you can also enjoy tea plantation before reach the waterfall and.. so many other beautifull places to explore. Or if you visit Yogya.. please come to wonosari gunung kidul. Lot's of beautiful beaches to explore.. Another place, you see mount Merapi quite close from Klangon, Super cool Candi Ratu Boko, etc.. etc..

Hello Luke ans Naomi, masih banyak destinasi wisata yang belum kalian kunjungi di pulau jawa (West Java) Di mulai dari : Taman nasional ujung kulon, Pelabuhan Ratu, yang paling uniik dan menarik adalah mengunjungi Suku Badui (Badui Tribe trasitional) in Banten. Kalian juga belum kunjungi Tangkuban Perahu mountain in Bandung. In Tangkuban perahu you're can view kawah belerang is very amazing. Hopefully while you're back here, you'd be able to make some acquaintances that would allow you to gather more insight into how to travel within Sulawesi, along with its possible social challenges (scams, etc). Out of curiosity, I looked into bus service from Makassar to Toraja in Traveloka, and I must say, the options are very limited, with little (no) insight into the quality of the service. We, in Java, have been truly pampered! 😂😬 I can only imagine the difficulty one has to go through in moving through such unfamiliar territory in back-packing style of travel. So sad to hear the situation, please please be carefull, the more exotic the place the more dangerous the creatures, It is a whole different situation between Java and other Island. The development of the transportation, education, behaviour, and norms of the people in each Island are things that need to be researched more. Banyak sekali pariwisata dalam dan luar negeri ( turis ) hanya kunjungi tempat tempat wisata yang sudah terkenal di Indonesia, selalu pemandangan alam, natural hampir sama. Tapi ada banyak juga tempat lain yang indah dekat Surabaya seperti kota Gresik dan kota kota lain, pulau Madura, juga terkenal dengan soto maduranya. Pantai sebelah selatan east java indah dengan lautan Hindianya, ada banyak beach indah di mana mana. Hopefully your first unpleasant experience in Sulawesi doesn't deter you from trying other adventures there. Every trip will definitely encounter things that are fun and not. Maybe you are currently experiencing bad things in Sulawesi. Hopefully it will be a lesson for all of us and hopefully your next journey will always be safe and without obstacles. If I could give you a suggestion, maybe you could try contacting Sam, a foreign tourist from UK who has been in Indonesia for almost 10 years, and in the last 3 years he started exploring Indonesia on his motorbike. He is also experienced with the nature of Sulawesi and its people, maybe you can ask for his help if one day both of you decide to try your luck again in Sulawesi. Fyi, Sam also makes a KZbin vlog about his travels in Indonesia. His YT channel, SAM INDOWILD. I think it would be interesting to see you collaborate together.

while you are in Surabaya, maybe i can suggest the nearest Bakmi GM and Solaria at Tunjungan Plaza, walk a bit to jalan Tunjungan you might enjoy some nice cafes, best time in the evening, i recommend coffee "Lain hati" in front of hotel majapahit, for 1 euro i think the coffee is one of the best in town, you can enjoy some foods, snacks or coffee while sitting there at the edge of the road watching peoples passing by, last recommendation Igor cafe at jalan Bliton maybe 10 or less than 15 minutes from your hotel, for 5-6 euro you can get authentic western foods, they also provide excellent pastry too approved by my Dad : ) He is irish like you two guys, please take care and hope you enjoy your trip

NOT only for foreigners... even for local people from outside sulawesi wanna go to toraja , it is soooo EXPENSIVE... the railway project from ujung pandang going north seems left to be a dream. There is a bus going to toraja and it takes more than 10 hours.. Dale phillip even took a plane from makassar to toraja and it costs a lot, and rent a motorbike during in toraja...

It's alright, even locals think twice for spending so much money just to explore Sulawesi. Maybe you can contact Kristian Hansen, he's foreigner youtuber that exploring Indonesia by his own big motorcycle which he bought in Indonesia (maybe, or he just imported his motorcycle from his country) but yeah, if you own motorcycle which can support your weight, it will be easier for you to go anywhere (but minus thing is you can only use sea transportation since it's the only one that allowed motorcycle to pass via island) you can ask The Lost Boys too, they have a lot of experience too with motorcycle

The Djuanda Airport is actually not within the Surabaya City area. It is in Sidoarjo, one of the satellite cities of Surabaya. The Soekarno Hatta Airport is not in Jakarta Area. It is actually in the Province of Banten. But for practicality, they are called as the airports of Surabaya and Jakarta, respectively.
