"Lah" is a suffix in the Malay language, fixed to the end of a word to modify or add nuance to the meaning. Basically, it: 1. To stress something, with stressed voice. "Where is that thing? I can't find it!", and that would be replied with "It's there lah" (Malay: "Adalah di situ!"). "It doesn't seem to work", replied with "Canlah!" (Malay: "Bolehlah!", equivalent to "IT DOES WORK! I'm hellbent sure it does!" 2. To be persuasive, used with soft voice, usually with the "a" vowel in the middle of LAH elongated. EN: Visit Malaysia. MS, normal mode: Lawati Malaysia. MS, persuasive mode: Lawatilah Malaysia. Or another example when haggling, youi're being persuasive and trying to make the seller agree to your price: "Canlaaaah.... RM50 is good price. Can? Canlaaaah" 3. Used when stating something obvious. 4. To tone down a statement. There are other ways to use it, with different nuances/meaning, but these are enough for introduction.

When it comes to slangs ie. when _lah_ is added to english words, this is one of the main features of manglish and singlish, in both malaysia and singapore. On the other hand, _lah_ is actually a legitimate and standard suffix in malay language, hence in bahasa malaysia which is the country's official or 1st language. As you might have probably noticed, it is very common for malaysians to use mixed languages in daily informal conversations, and over time, the malay suffix _lah_ has been adopted into our sentences even when the particular words used with the suffix are english words. It is not exactly to sound more respectful, most of the time it is to be more expressive, or to emphasise more on the word/intent. An example, if you ask the local shopkeeper if the price of an item can be lowered, he/she may answer: _sorry lah, this one is very cheap already..._ But you are still very keen to get that item, you still wanna try your luck, now you want to be just a little bit more persuasive, so with your soft melodious voice accompanied by the sweetest smile and two sparkly eyes, say: _can lah... you give me only 5 ringgit discount, I'll buy this and give you cash now, okay? Can lah..._ But the shopkeeper may be adamant and simply reply: _cannot lah!_ That's it, that would mean you won't get another cent off that item 😂

This is because originally in Malay, 'lah' is appended to the end of the word and is not a separate word by itself. In Malay, 'lah' is used to change a verb into a command or to soften its tone, particularly when usage of the verb may seem impolite. For example, "to drink" is "minum", but "Here, drink!" is "minumlah".

Hello from Kuala Lumpur. I enjoyed watching your video and am curious about what foreign visitors think of our country. The Twin Tower is widely recognised as Kuala Lumpur's equivalent of Paris' Eiffel Tower. It is the building that most accurately depicts Malaysia. As you may have noticed, KL boasts a mix of modern and colonial-era historic structures in addition to the city's abundance of greenery. Due to our hot heat, the majority of Malaysians prefer to shop inside malls where it is considerably cooler than outside. That explains why there are so many sizable malls throughout the city. Additionally, a number of covered pedestrian bridges and monorail stations connect several of the malls. However, I've personally noticed that some land pedestrians don't always show much consideration for people with disabilities. Some make it impossible for people in wheelchairs to cross because they are too narrow, some have uneven surfaces from tree roots, and some are jammed with motorcycles parking along the sideway. We sincerely hope the two of you will enjoy your time here when you have and I want to thank you once more for your wonderful comments on our country.

9:25 Ok let me give you some insight on LAH. Firstly it's a suffix in the Malay language, but it's become a common expression among speakers of English, Chinese dialects and Tamil. It's exclusive to Malaysians, so you wouldn't hear an Indian national residing in Malaysia use it. So, what is LAH? It actually means nothing, and it is usually used in an informal setting. Using LAH tones down what could be perceived as a serious assertion of a thought. For example, if you asked me, "Are you married?" and I replied "No", it may sound like I were serious about that no. It could also be perceived as I didn't like being asked that question. But if I said, "No lah", it immediately tones down the whole thought. Now, my NO would sound like I was sad it hadn't happened yet, or maybe I wasn't lucky enough. The LAH makes the whole thing casual. A lot of it has to do with the intonation when we use LAH. We never use LAH to convey anything with a serious tone. Another example might help. Let's say you asked the hotel receptionist, "What's the fastest way to get to KLCC?" If she said, "You could take a grab car", then she was being formal, and it might sound like she gave you a truly remarkable answer that nobody could have thought of. But if said, "Take a grab lah" then she was casual, informal and the whole idea of getting a grab car wasn't really a big deal. I hope this gives you an idea. Would have been able to convey the idea better if we were chatting face to face.

about the lah - grammatically borrowed from the other local Asian languages that make up the majority of the population, it's easiest to wrap your head around it if you speak any of the Malay or its sister languages or the Chinese languages. the purpose is to add an emotive emphasis both positively and negatively. To know which, you need to parse the rest of sentence/conversation. It's mainly informal especially in Malaysian English, but in its Malay form it's works also in formal settings (I can't speak for Chinese contexts). Likely you've been encountering it in more friendly situations, so the lah is trying to convey a relaxed or friendly tone since it's being used to soften a declarative statement. If you hear it being said exasperatedly/frustratedly then it's emphasising somethingto make sure You Get The Point, lol. TL;DR the -lah is a verbal punctuation sound that you have to parse in the full context of the sentence. You get the hang of it, you'll be fine in Singapore as well lol.

Postfix 'lah' does not anythg, it's only to emphasize our expression, it normally goes with intonation that changes intended meaning. That much I can say about 'lah'.

I'm very curious to know, is Bangkok really much better than KL? So many people rave about Bangkok. Is it really that beautiful?
@TwoMadExplorers
@TwoMadExplorers Жыл бұрын
Very different cities! Bangkok is charming and the people & food are really amazing, plus very low cost too. KL is super developed with incredible roads and street food, plus the amazing locals make KL incredible too. It’s very hard to compare these two amazing places 🙏
