"Horse Racing" is a Grade 3 piece under the erhu test, somehow like Fur Elise for piano. Therefore it's not a beginner piece at all. For a normal student, it would take about three months after he begins to learn erhu to get to the level of a complete "Horse Racing".

I have been playing the erhu for 6 years now and I'm amazed these two actually managed to: 1. Make a sound on D major 2. Miraculously play F major in less than an hour 3. SHIFT WITH AMAZING PRECISION 4. Tremolo and trail 5. Sort of make the neighing sound (in Eddie's case, a dying horse's last breath) 6. Play Horse Racing (Sai Ma) when I haven't even learnt the whole thing yet. Mad respect to these guys.

Actually that’s not that impressive btw. I’m not a professional violinist, and only learn violin for 1 year (yeah u can tell im not good at it), and then try to play erhu.. erhu it’s basically violin but with only 2 strings... soo when u see them, their fingering was so great and in tune (bcoz they’re really great pro violinist), basically they just focus how to swing the bow and voilaaaa... the result like what I expected, they doing great job
@jashea7610
@jashea7610 4 жыл бұрын
Eldoral Suli however,our bow technique is completely different from violin’s,and our range is smaller due to having only 2 strings.if you want to read our sheet music,you probably have to start from scratch cuz we have a completely different sheet music,using numbers instead of notes like crotchet or quavers.also,if one is trying to actually learn the basics of Erhu,you have to take note of wrist movement,arm movement,hand position,bow position as all these are completely different from the violin.so yea as someone who plays Erhu,they’re doing a great job considering it’s 1 hour but please do not try to downgrade how difficult it actually is.
@eldoralsuli5387
@eldoralsuli5387 4 жыл бұрын
Jarrett Seah im not take easy or downgrading erhu, what i say was they’re doing great as i expected for the first time. The actual is i love erhu more than violin, not to say downgrading violin but yeah its just my own preference. And im not reading music sheet, just copying what i heard bcoz its much more simpler 😂

I love how Eddy and Brett despite being both professional violinists are so different when trying other instruments. Like in this video, Brett had clearly the upper hand, while in the double bass video Eddy was able to adapt faster.

Perhaps Eddy adapted faster, but Brett had a more coherent sound with the double bass UNTIL he got complimented. Then he stopped trying because he didn't want Eddy to be left behind. Watch it closely, it's fascinating.

@@schpongleded LOL I have noticed that. In all of these challenges Brett generally has more control in sound when starting out but Eddy adapts fast like you said. Though I don't know, it could be that they have different styles of learning and some people perform better under some pressure of some sorts. I noticed that Eddy kinda looks way for confident practicing alone or when he's more relaxed. Like when they instructor stepped out and let them practice alone he had somewhat better sounds coming out then when the instructor was watching. I know I normally sounds like sh*t learning on the spot :'D

@Lu Cheng Well to a certain degree. Obviously the skills are widely different. But you have already figured out how to learn. I played er-hu when I was 9 years old till 12 (2008 - 2011) for my pre-school chinese orchestra club. We were ranked from beginner, intermediate, advance and to the performing class. I got into the performing class after a year and a half of playing when I passed the test set by my instructors (thanks to vibrato, didn't know that term back then, it was self taught by looking at my instructor playing the er-hu, got no internet). I performed alongside with a team consisting around 15 members in multiple schools, it felt great to be on stage and introducing classical chinese instruments to different people. Biggest regret of my life was not practicing for 40hrs a day, it costs me an opportunity to perform alongside with the top performing 8 members at Beijing National Stadium (a small nearby stage, not at the actual stadium). A few tears were shed during the member announcing day and realizing I wasn't picked. I continued playing er-hu for my school until I graduated but my family wasn't as wealthy as the others we couldn't afford a personal er-hu after I graduated and never touched it since. Long story short, keep on practicing. Don't give up on something you're passionate about be it a hobby or an instrument

I love that the sound they're making together is totally like a dying horse but their trills are very in sync, very even, and very crisp It's like the horse gradually dies but suddenly gets hyped up by the fact that it's going to see its deceased lover and then continues to die away

Y'know, I've played the erhu since I was 10 (I'm 23 now) and I STILL sound like Brett on a good day. My teacher, bless his heart, tried to get to me learn 赛马 and politely asked me to stop. I kid you not, he said 幸好你会弹钢琴 (thank god you know how to play piano). That's when I knew I'd never make it as an erhu player. 😂

there was once when my brother (he was a beginner at that time) was waiting outide his erhu teacher's room before starting erhu lesson. he saw the teacher's pet cat walking around and thought it would be a good idea to play his erhu for the cat. he took his erhu out and played. the cat has never walked near him since.
