Hello everyone ! I finally took the time to talk about my experience with the Erhu, I hope you don't mind my terrible French accent 😂 If you want to support me, you can stream my music here : li.sten.to/2EaTCBe Also, here is additional infos for you ! ➡️ABOUT THE SETUP OF THE ERHU : The setup I show in that video is very specific to my Erhu and my way of playing, but the goal is to find what works for you and your Erhu of course ! Regarding the setup, in my opinion, anything goes. I encourage you to spend time trying different bridges and different kind of clothes for the dampener especially. Do not be afraid to do things in a more unconventional way ! ➡️A WORD ABOUT BOWS : Over the time I've noticed that brand new bows with a lot of hairs can produce a "muffled" sound. Especially the heavy/long ones. I find that too much hairs can kill the resonance and sound by hindering the vibration of the string when played. I always prefer to play with bows that has been stripped of some of their hairs. I find the sound more responsive, more agile, and more musical. ➡️A WORD ABOUT ROSIN : This is something that is often overlooked by Erhu learners but making sure that your bow is properly rosined is important ! The sound will break down very fast if there is not enough rosin, and it will make you apply too much force to compensate. Also make sure that both sides are properly rosined (especially the side that touches the outer strings !). Different types of rosin exists and I advice to try multiple one to see which one is best. ➡️ABOUT SNAKESKINS : There is a relation between the age, or "maturity" of the snakeskin and how it sound. It's the most important part of the setup in my eyes. On brand new Erhu, the snake skin will almost always be too stiff and too tense at first, giving you a bright, brittle sound. Over time (1-2 years) it naturally loosen a bit and the sound improves tremendously. I've recently got a pricey Erhu and at first it was literally unplayable ! But after almost a year, the snakeskin relaxed a little bit and it's so much better now. I got 4 Erhus at the studio. Ranging from 100 euros to 2000+ euros in price. And the one that sound the best is a 200 euros model from Eason Music. It's also the one that I've played the most and that has got the loosest snake skin. I think my priciest one will surpass this one in terms of quality next year when the skin will have loosened up even more. This maturation process of the snakeskins is so important that nowadays I try to buy only secondhand Erhu, to skip this initial 1-2 years phase where the sound is very stiff. ➡️ADJUSTING THE QIANJIN : Adjusting the quianjin changes many things. I find that the instrument is responding better to bowing when the quianjin is kinda lower. Also, the lower you got, the shorter the "spaces" between notes will be, so if you have small hands it can help. On top of that, since the spaces are shorter, your vibrato will sound more ample. I personally like when it's lower, even if I have big hands. The sound is more light and responsive and the vibrato sounds better, I also feel like I'm more precise when the notes are closer together. As with everything else : don't be afraid to experiment ! ➡️ABOUT BRIDGES : There are a tons of different bridges, larger ones, smaller one, longer one, rounder ones... some are pierced, some are very dense and tall... It make a HUGE difference, on top of that you can get many different one on EasonMusic for cheap. So be sure to order some and experiment. I find that smaller/shorter ones makes for a more bright and resonant sound. Larger ones tends to hinder the resonance of the skin too much... ➡️PLAY YOUR OWN WAY : Check out these two videos from insanely talented Erhus players : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZfHd3p7nJJsiJo kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKuUioCggdx4rqc See how the first one is very precise and sophisticated in her movement, very composed. Now see how the second player is more "ethnic" in it's way of playing. Everything is different from these two players, the way they sit, the way they hold the bow, the way they position their hands to do the vibratos, glissando etc... even the final sound and setup of their Erhus is day and night. My point is, when analyzing Erhu players, you will see that every player tends to have their own way of playing the instrument. You should have yours as well. The Erhu is an instrument that will make more sense if played in a more personal way. Don't stress too much over the sound others are achieving and focus more on what YOU want to hear when you play the Erhu. If you managed to read to the end this massive block of text, congrats ! please, if you have any other questions, put them in the comments below ! Eliott Tordo

I hooked up on your videos for years now. I finally bought an erhu from Sound of Mountain you recommended earlier. As a beginner this video was very helpful, it showed your emotions towards the erhu. I found a chinese erhu teacher where I live, it is hard to communicate through translator, but she has played the erhu her whole life. What she recommended that in the beginning you will hate the sound you are playing, so you have to get used to it. I'm still at that part, i hate my sound. Regardless I have to practice each day if I want to have a sound that I love. To all those who are trying to learn it, dont try to rush the learning method, as Eliott mentioned, it takes months even years to get better, all you need is to have small plans you can achieve while playing the erhu. Sorry for the long comment, here is a joke: If you bought the whole bow, you have to play with the whole bow :D
