Yup. Henry has said many times that he just knows a little bit of everything. And he has PTSD about practicing classical violin pieces. I am a fan of his but I do wish that some of his fans wouldn't hype up his violin skills to such an unreasonable level. I'm pretty sure Henry doesn't care when ppl think that his violin playing is not at a professional level. He's so much more than that.
@Neitha983 жыл бұрын
He never claimed himself to be a prodigy it's korean media who made him looks this way. He was and he still very humble considering the fact that he is still very good at every instrument that he play. Just looking at his channel content prouves it. I am sure that If he saw or watch this video one day he would not Feel offended since it's not the point 😊
@isagi933153 жыл бұрын
I think people praise his violin skills too much only because he is multitalented and violin is one of his many talents. If you only judge his violin skills, it's good but not to the level at which people are praising him, but under the circumstances where you know this dude can do many other things besides violin yet he is still this good, you rate his skill level higher than if you just take this skill out and rate it independently. It's hard to explain but I hope that's clear enough.
@animemangageeki3 жыл бұрын
@@isagi93315 That's true! Most fans praise his violin skills because of him being an idol having many other talents as well. Alone, like TwoSet has specified, his violin playing isn't that amazing like how media portrays if you were to judge that individually, but looking at the bigger picture, Henry keeping up with so many talents at a time is what's amazing and praise-worthy.

You're right about his background. He won gold at Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music in composing, and in violin too, and silver in piano. I saw a clip ages ago where he was being interviewed about it and they said they thought he was a good violin player who could do well and asked why he didn't focus on it. His reply was that he would have to give up singing, dancing, composing and piano if he focused on violin and he loved them too much so he chose to focus on singing as he could do all of those things as a singer. Then he was chosen in a global audition and went to South Korea and became a kpop idol in Super Junior (2008) and a few years later started his solo career.

The problem with TwoSet is, they are trying to discredit Henry just by simply choosing some performance he did in variety show before. I am not sure about any of the video they chose either being edited/dub or not by the specific show, but Henry did play around this level, there are plenty of live and concert available, they just chose to ignore it all by highlighting some of his performance in variety show which he doesn't has any power to do with how their editing is. TwoSet seem like someone that think of themselves better than anyone else that did not has the title of "professional" because they are professional. Henry did has level 10 in both violin and piano before he stopped the professional training and go for idol. And bare in mind, just because he stop training in school, doesn't mean he stop using and practicing such instruments, he used them a lot actually, he is sharpening his skills informally little by little. Selected some past performance in variety show trying to discredit someone is stupid especially he can't even control what the producer do with the editing. As far as I know, probably some of the video here has flaw when he is performing, and the editor just decided to edit it to make it perfect. So he is more like, actually doing it for real but has flaw, only edited by editors to make it perfect, instead of using pre-recorded. For who is interested, he route completely change and move away from being too "entertainer" to focus on his music after he quit SM. SM totally screw him over on his career, the show he join after he out from SM, Begin Again, feel free to check it out, awesome show and he clearly improve a lot throughout seasons, especially his singing skill. There is also some fancam available proving their performance is the same with what being show. And you also can see how his performance change after leave SM, he used to do a lot and focus more on dramatic dance when playing violin to playing it seriously without such dramatically. You also can check all his live performances in China from 2019 and on wards.

@irmar Жыл бұрын
I can understand this. Because they see the handsome visuals, the lavish sets with glitzy lighting effects, they see the dramatic expressions on the performer's face, the moves etc. And also because the pieces chosen are of course the most popular and exciting, with the "boring" parts cut off. Everything contributes to make it palatable and enjoyable even to those who don't like or who are neutral towards classical music. They have to, because TV audience is very diverse, and you have to make most of them happy so that they don't turn it off and change channel. And I don't think it's a bad thing, because a portion of this audience - maybe a tiny minority, but that's still good - might think of listening to more classical pieces and slowly-slowly get sucked in and develop an interest in this music. Why not? It's the same with that Western cello player, Stjepan Hauser, who is insanely handsome and female audiences swoon. It's okay. They look at him and listen at the music at the same time, and associate the pleasure with the music.

For someone who watches a lot of Korean media I was surprised how long it took you to realize that the sound is pretaken. They do this literally almost every time with every artist without permission. And they do it regardless if the artist is good or bad. Even most of the fans prefer fancams than the original footage. Most of them is better than the original footage, for réal. But yeah Is just what Korean editores mostly do, it isn't what most of the public wants, 'in my perspective', but is what they do mostly
@nati42184 жыл бұрын
Also I gotta add that most of the times they let them perfom with real sound while performing and then edit the video. But sometimes they're super disrespectful and put they're mics off while they're performing on stage with the prerecorded music. Some artist even realize they're mic is off while being on stage and shout out "please turn it on". If they complain enough, they actually get their mics on

@@toiletjunpaper Just because he studied at Berklee doesn't automatically make him more talented than other people. Not to mention, he went to Berklee to study music production, not the violin. In contrast, Brett graduated with honors from the Queensland Conservatorium and Eddie was actually the concertmaster for the Queensland Conservatorium for a while. So they've been playing professionally for years, and been part of multiple different orchestras. Now I'm not saying Henry Lau isn't talented, because he clearly is talented at many different things. But you can't honestly say he's more talented than two actual *professional* violinists.
@annielongoria4 жыл бұрын
@@toiletjunpaper I know Brett was part of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and both him and Eddy were part of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Are those not respectable enough orchestras to be considered "professional"? I don't follow Henry too closely so I've never seen his Zigeunerweisen, but I can respect that as being a valid reason to believe he's more talented at the violin. It's just that saying "He went to Berklee", as evidence of someone being more musically talented than another, really irked me for some reason. Eddy and Brett not only observe the errors in performances but also demonstrate correct technique, just like a good violin teacher would do during lessons, ( like my own violin teacher, Anya 🥰). Their observations help make me more self-aware and self-critical during my own practice sessions.

It's a little bit annoying that people in the comments are just talking about how TwoSet is afraid of kpop fandom and had to filter out so much of their roasts. I really don't think so! They said what they said because it's true. Brett & Eddy ain't lying to us. They gave us an honest review of what's happening in Henry's performances and didn't hold back DESPITE the fandom scare. They were impressed that Henry is actually good even though he's an idol and they pointed out what seems to be technical flaws. *It's a fair criticism.* It's simply them recognizing that Henry isn't a violin professional. *Copying my other comment: Unlike that people TwoSet ACTUALLY roasted, Henry isn't posing himself as "the best violinist in the world" (ehem Guinness attempters). Henry is a non-professional violinist. Outside of violin playing, he has a thousand more talents/skills including singing, dancing, playing the piano, songwriting/composing, acting, being able to speak in at least four languages, etc. //TwoSet isn't the enemy of Henry Lau or of kpop. ///The truth is, I would be more annoyed at people who always flex about their violin skills as if they're top-tier when they can't even do proper phrasing.

@@TheExtraterrestrial99 I'm quite sure they weren't cherry-picking, because that Michael Jackson performance is the first result that comes up when you search "Henry Lau violin", and the 7 rings performance was pretty recent. I also watched one of those live performances and another more recent performance, but none of them are impressive from a classical standpoint. Twoset definitely are better than he is at classical violin, not because of their "title," but because of their skill. They are judging his playing based on skill, not performance. They are also criticizing these particular clips exclusively, as they say, and mostly dislike the reactions. Twoset are definitely not hating on Lau in any way.

@@archelynwolf Well, the first result I got is his Despacito. And nope, they are also judging the performance and that's the problem. The whole pre-recorded, edited blablabla, is all about performance(9:55 - 12:00). If it is about skill, they will just point out he missed this while doing the dance, there was flaw and whatsoever. But they went directly into this is pre-recorded, no way he can do this and more , even worst by putting their title ".....Reveals Fake Violin Secret" And for reaction part, it is just normal for Korean variety show. They separated celebrity skill to such as acting skill, singing skill, hosting and variety skill. Ya, there are variety skill in their entertainment industry, even has yearly award ceremony special for variety department too instead of just for acting or music. This is why their variety show more success than the other countries. And this is where I didn't understand, those are not all singer and they definitely don't know violin, so why the need to highlighted the reaction if not just to make it look like they are boasting Henry? And some secret tips, Korean editors for every show, they like to cut out the reaction and put it into where they think fix it, so, the reaction shown actually are not always a reaction to that specific moment.

I hope henry sees this video and become a good musician like you guys!
@whatevergoesforme5129 Жыл бұрын
Hmm, I know this is a late response but I learned through research that Henry gave up classical music and the violin/piano after choosing Kpop. He actually won or got second place in violin and piano competitions before becoming an idol. I am not really what you call a fan but I researched his background when I saw him play piano, violin, and drums. He is out of practice now because of his choice but he could have been a professional violinist/pianist like these two guys had he not chosen Kpop to his parents' dismay. And Henry prefers to compose music which he has done as a Kpop artist. I saw his nice videos with that Korean female child violin prodigy (the toddler that astounded these two professionals) and those videos showed me that Henry is a good musician but he even admitted he has not practiced for years.

Idk if it’s just me, but Henry’s face during some of his more painful performance moments clearly showed that he knew it wasn’t good. He looked so nervous in some of the ones with a live audience :’’’) I think that as someone who does violin as a side gig to spice up his idol image, he’s fine. Lol he plays a bit in the buzzfeed thirst tweets video, and I was like 🤔 but he’s not terrible, compared to your average person, or even to many mainstream “showy” violin performers. I think that he personally is humble and realistic about his violin playing. He can’t control the way that other people react to him, nor the way his company tries to sell his “genius” image. He can be entertaining, which is his main job, and he definitely tries to encourage people to pursue their dreams when it comes to music, so good on him. I liked this video! The insurance bit was quite funny
