The Pepsi commercial features Mark Wood with his own invention which is that Flying-V style electric violin. And he normally does one with 7 strings. K. a) you don't need to be alive at the time of release to be familiar with specific music - this is a classical music channel playing pieces from literally hundreds of years ago. b) I was alive for the Charlie Daniels Band release and all the cover versions since. c) the story behind the song is embedded in American (especially mid-western) cultural psyche and is regularly referenced in pop culture - which is why Pepsi used the premise for the ad and Tenacious D used it for The Best Song in the World and Futurama with Robot Satan. And d) every musician should be familiar with musical folklore regarding deals with the devil because it's interesting.
