Yeah, well no. It's a nervous laughter. People do it to allay (can you use that word in this context?) others in situations that make them nervous that they might have done/said sth wrong and might get attacked for it. Sometimes people do it also if the subject hits too close to home and they want to conceil their feelings in front of others. Of course it's a subconcious thing. In Brett's case here I suspect both of the reasons being combined 😅 They both implied that they had experienced similar things so it might hit close to home and for the guilt thing: as far as I think of Brett, he always wants to do the right thing and be considerate and empathetic. I think he said the abuse thing and at the same moment questioned, if it was the right term for what he had seen in the clip and if anyone might get offended by him saying that. Brett should really get a teeny-tiny bit more confident. (Small analysis coming from an even smaller german preschool teacher 😋)

Now I'm 30 and since 11 years I've been practicing double bass every freaking day. I mean, before I began to watch 2set violin. Remember: practice every day, make it a routine. This is the only way, even if it's not a lot (1 hour minimum, though).

@UrsusSuperior445 жыл бұрын
@Hale Svitkona Well those actions surely are not meant to be for abuse sake, but if they resulted in emotional abuse ("a child's state of well-being severely, permanently diminished", you name it), isn't it just simply that - emotional abuse? For instance I could kill a pedestrian during accident while trying to avoid being killed myself during head-on crash with upcoming vehicle. So can I then say: "Your Honor, I didn't want to kill that person, I just swerved off to avoid being smashed by a truck! The pedestrian just happened to be in the way, you can't say I killed him!" ? What do you think? To put it straight: If your child is mad at you/displeased/whatever because of your actions for a short time and it just passes with time because child understands/accepts it/you lower the (probably too high) pressure, it's ok. It most likely was because "kids are just like that" and it was probably just healthy strict parenting. (Yep, it's healthy _within boundaries_ ) But if your child is CONSISTENTLY feeling bad because of your parenting, after some time slowly becoming more and more quiet about it, holding resentment and you did nothing to stop/reverse it and just continued the way it was (maybe completely unaware of harm to your child's well-being) - you just indirectly abused it emotionally, while most likely trying to "do what is best for him/her" and probably blindly overdoing it Sorry

This video and the comments that accompany it have been really eye-opening to me. Growing up, I had an extremely narcissistic grandfather who paid for me to have piano lessons and would brag to everyone that his granddaughter was a little prodigy. My mom wanted to please him so that he would continue financing the lessons, so she pressured me to practice pieces I hated and perform in front of others. The result was that I developed crippling performance anxiety, gradually grew to despise the instrument (as well as my grandfather, who I unfortunately still have to deal with to this day), and, once I was old enough to decide for myself, quit taking lessons and basically walked away from the piano altogether. My mom and I are fine, since she has admitted that her actions were misguided and apologized for pushing me so hard, but I've scarcely touched my keyboard in the last 9 years. For the longest time, I thought I was alone in this...it seemed like all the other musicians I knew had healthy relationships with their instruments and couldn't imagine giving them up. But now that I know so many others here have gone through the same thing (often to an even worse degree), I feel that maybe it's time to confront the anger and bitterness I have simmering inside and begin to mend my relationship with my instrument. After all, I still adore the piano, and it breaks my heart that I don't enjoy playing it like I used to. But reading about your experiences gives me hope for redemption. So thanks, guys! I hope that in spite of it all, you still find joy in playing music. :)

I kinda understand the hate piano part, it hits really close to home honestly. As a kid, I've never wanted to play piano nor have any interests in piano, but my mother forced me to play it since it helped me with my ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). At first, I don't really have any resentment towards it but as years passed, I actually do kind of hate it. It takes so much effort and time to play a piece, especially examination pieces which are mostly boring. With that being said, I was not a good student and has to be forced to practice and such, lots of tears were shed (for both competitions and examinations) but I actually do made it and passed Grade 8 Examination of ABRSM. Then I took a break from it for about 5 years. Although as I graduated from University, I started to really appreciate my mother for making me learn piano. I don't know what happened, but something just... click. Perhaps its the freedom I got after 8th Grade Examination, I can choose to learn whatever music piece I wish to play. I got back to practicing and currently, I'm working as a Piano Teacher. It's such a joy and pleasure to teach music to kids and students. I do my best to not pressure them too much and be supportive for their journey, so even if they don't ended up majoring in music, they would learn things like discipline, honesty, and other characteristics that can help them in life. Even though it doesn't make much money, but I feel mentally satisfied for actually help students realize that music can be fun and enjoyable. To any pianist or musician out there, please don't give up on your music journey. I can't regret enough about my 5 years hiatus from piano. It really is worth it, and if you are currently in a pinch with music, then I suggest you give it some time. Learn the pieces you actually like, listen to variations of those pieces. I assure you that it'll be worth it.
