Really nice to see the more busy areas of Nagoya, although it's not the best cycling route compared to your normal river side route. The traffic seems to be relative well behaved and mindful of other users. (Just watch some videos of cycling in London as a comparison.)

This main road is not bad at all, and there's a decent shoulder for most of it, which is nice. The cars are generally pretty respectful of bikes, which is nice. Just gotta watch out for taxis and pedestrians mainly (and turning cars)

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I loved riding in the city, as well as the suburbs. At 61, Michigan has been home for almost ten years. I would ride from Madison Heights to Inkster. The biggest challenges are the DDOT and SMART Buses. Now that Detroit has the 'Q Line", light rail presents with a unique opportunity for bike riders (staying safe and not getting run over). I see so much on the bike as opposed to being in the car. I've been riding for fifty-six years without any major mishaps. My experience is that if you ride with respect for others (as well as following traffic laws), it works well for everyone. Thanks for sharing this video, my brother. The $200 that you spent on the mike is well worth it...awesome sound quality! Be safe. Dan.

Riding a bicycle in Tokyo seems so dangerous. (Although I deem Tokyo as a great city in most aspects.) There are no separated bicyle lanes. You have ride on the car lane, and frequently have to bypass the parked car, which makes you more close to the rushing cars on your right side. I lived in Shanghai for a half year. I think Shanghai is more friendly to bicycles. There are almost always dedicated bicycle lanes separated with white solid lines (road marks). On wider roads there are even protected bicycle lanes. Cars will give walkers and bicycles priority at crossings, which you don't see in most Chinese cities except Shanghai and Hangzhou.

As I watched you riding between stopped cars & the curb, I was reminded of an incident that happened to me when I lived in Japan. A piece of advice: don't trust that pedestrians will stay off the road. My story: Back in 1998, my 7 years in Japan nearing its end, I was living in Tokyo with my wife and our newborn son. Our apartment was in Shibaura, Minato-ku, and my work was in Akasaka, 4 km away. One day I was commuting to work by bicycle (road bike), rolling down the hill on Azabu-dori toward its intersection with Roppongi-dori, and there was a red light. A major intersection, with 3 lanes in each direction, there were pedestrian overpasses all around. But this guy decided he couldn't be bothered climbing the stairs, and instead he jumped the guard rails, jaywalked across 6 lanes between stopped cars & trucks, and without checking he walked out between two trucks right in front of me. When this idiot blithely stepped into my path I was rolling down the hill, approaching the intersection, in the margin beside the stopped cars, relatively slowly (maybe 10-15 km/h), feathering my brakes. When I saw him I slammed on the brakes but I couldn't swerve around him (no room) or stop in time. My front wheel hit his trailing foot and it forced an endo, and I face-planted. Lost 2 and a half teeth. In Japan when there is an accident between a cyclist and a pedestrian the assumption is that the cyclist is at fault, but luckily there was a major politician from China visiting nearby that day and there were police everywhere and several saw the incident. Because of the circumstances and thanks to the expert eyewitnesses it was deemed 90% the pedestrian's fault. I ended up getting some compensation, but I'd much rather it had never happened. So be extra careful when passing stopped cars waiting for a light. Hopefully you'll never run into an idiot pedestrian jaywalker.
@TwoWheelCruise5 жыл бұрын
There's people like that in every country unfortunately. You're very lucky you had many eyewitnesses to back you up, that could've been scary otherwise. I really need to start recording every ride just to be extra safe. It's still ridiculous that you were held 10% accountable.

TWO WHEEL CRUISE ADVENTURES IN JAPAN! \O/ That moment when you said you're going to ignore the Wahoo 43:57 and then adapter broke. LOL that non-intentional-comedic timing. LA traffic especially downtown is somewhat similar to the ones shown in your video. The one-way streets suck though and including the very narrow streets especially when some cars parked at the curb to make it more packed. I ride on sidewalks sometimes but only in situations where I want to avoid dealing with a yielding turning light if I'm turning or avoid the red lights at a T intersection or when my destination is really close but happens to be on the opposite side of traffic. Plus, since I switched to clipless pedals, I find riding on sidewalks dangerous especially if there are pedestrians or any obstacles on it and I will get caught off guard and fall if I fail to unclip on time. There are traffic lights where I live that will never turn green if no cars are present on the induction sensors on the road so if I want it to turn green as a pedestrian or cyclist, I would have to go over to push the pedestrian crossing button. I tried riding through a road where it meets with the freeway on/off ramp before and It seemed very dangerous especially during heavy traffic hour because I would have to deal with cars coming from both sides me while I'm in the middle trying to merge back to the nearest curb. Glad you made it to work on time to make this awesome video which I enjoyed viewing. I got to see how Japan streets are from first person POV and how many cyclists of all ages are out there riding their bikes.:) Random fact: Babymetal Moa-metal is also from Nagoya and her birthday is on July 4th. :O

Definitely stay on the river path. It's only a matter of time before you get hurt using the main road. I did this commute when I lived in Japan from Yokohama to Tokyo 44km round trip 4 days a week. I thought it would be better then over crowded trains. Lost count how many times cars sandwich me in the cycle lane or other cyclists & pedestrians cutting me off or coming the wrong way. I saw this in your video. Be super careful when passing parked cars. Doors just magical open in front of you. Your an experienced cyclists, so I know you have a sixth sence of any pending dangers. I lost my passion for cycling while in Japan but have regained it after leaving. All I can say is be safe & don't take unnecessary risks. I'm sure your wife doesn't want to be a widow yet. Take care

Good stuff! I personally struggle between taking the scenic route vs. taking the "fast" route. On one hand, the scenic route (as scenic as Philly can get) is less traffic-y, and has less intense hills (which is nice considering the mornings have been a 100% humid 70°-80°F, and I sweat like a pig). On the other hand, there's still traffic lights on the scenic, and the extra 2 miles would mean I would need to leave earlier. I like to leave as late as possible! Honestly though, there's really not much of a difference. I'm still gonna sweat heavily, and the traffic in my area is typically very considerate of cyclists (the tiny roads just get packed if I leave even 5 minutes after a certain time). I'm just trying not to be late all the time, but the fast route isn't even helping much there (my own fault). Maybe I should just..... not be late!
@TwoWheelCruise5 жыл бұрын
maybe just plan to take the scenic route, but if your running late switch to the fast route ;)
Hey cruise! Hi from Tokyo rider facing countless of red light stops :D Riding on the river path is better .. I envy you that you have such option. All of the routes I can take to work are city routes T_T. Having many red light that force you stop often is painful, especially when you have to make up for the time. When I ride and get into a proper speed, after a while I have to stop... so can't maintain the speed at all... I hate this part, but try to think as it's a kind of high interval training. Another thing I hate when I ride in the city is that some times there are other riders that definitely ride slower than me. After i overtook them and reach the red light, they like to get in front of me even they know that after the red light, I will overtake them again (I always stop the bike behind the crossing line). This is annoying as I want to avoid overtaking as much as possible. Tokyo has lot of cars on the main road (and unluckily it's my route), overtaking can lead to risk on having the accident. For other road-bike-riders, they always observe others, but not for most of people who commute by by here. Riding in the city, I also have to remember the red-green light rhythm so that I can maintain the speed. However, sometimes I go blocked by cars or other riders and can not cross the light in time. This really makes me a bit upset T_T I wish there are less cars and less junctions in Tokyo T_T ANW, the most important thing is the safety, so it can't be helped ...
@TwoWheelCruise5 жыл бұрын
Lots of annoying things out there, but unfortunately just nothing we can really do to change them :/ Those slower riders who pass at stops I don't think are really thinking about anything.. It makes no sense why they do that, but you might be better off stopping more forward (that's what I always do)
@daffygrey5 жыл бұрын
Cruise, is there a "Shortest Route" on the Wahoo? It's probably best to keep it on "Quickest Route". When you can found a stretch of main road without traffic lights, your pace definitely increased. Those side streets seem a dead loss with all those stop signs.
@TwoWheelCruise5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if there is a different option, I just used "take me to". I not so quickly found out that the main roads are way faster in certain sections, but the take me to is still useful to keep the reference point in the maps.

@@GiZMOSOLiD complete stops: yes and no, depends on how strava feels that day whether it wants to autopause or not. Avg. speed gets more accurate the longer the ride time is though. Other commute data: yeah, still around 25km/h though he opens up on the trails sometimes to avg. about 28-29 and has better days some times. Wish I could share a link but you'll have to find his response to "what was your average speed" in the comments Seems he holds himself back on commutes for safety though. With the right route and bike you could probably manage the same or similar avg. speed.

I think you need to make sure that if "一般道" which is at the intersection for the high way and general road at the time point, 2:22 and 5:19 in this movie allows for only cars and motorcycles, or cars, motorcycles and bicycles. Because 一般道路 has such two options. Car accidents with a bicycle have been increased in Japan. So the police are more considerate for the drives on resolving the accidents. So please carefully choose the road for your commute. 朝の車の多い道路は本当に危険です!
@TwoWheelCruise5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! From my experience, "一般道" which do not allow bikes are usually clearly marked. In this case, I believe it is there to distinguish between the highway entrance and the main road, so legally it should be fine. But definitely, not the safest place to be riding. I think I'll stick with my river commute path :)
@TTT-o2f5 жыл бұрын
One way to make sure is to ask the police directly. They will kindly tell you. Another option is to use the app like ‘自転車Navitime’. It can be risky for you if such entrusted app doesn’t lead you a certain road. Thank you for quick response! 私は電動のクロスバイクかロードバイクが欲しいですねぇXD

I hate GPS for two reasons... Too many back roads, and random roite updates... lol "I 500 ft turn left"... "BUT I STILL HAVE A QUARTER OF A MILE LEFT OF THE BRIDGE I AM ON... YOU MURDROUS GPS!!!"... I think what I find jun to watch is not just the conversation, or the scenery (which are good), but I like racing games, and I like the driving perspective of the front of the hood of the car to judge gaps, and petspective on passing other racers. You kinda give that veiw point. So in so tight spaces between curb and car... I am thinking... "ehhhhhh oh we got room!"... lol peobably sounds weird, but weird is what I good at.

I feel way safer riding on the road in Nagoya than I ever did on my way to work in Mikawa. Drivers are way more aware in the city of cyclists. Truck drivers on Route 78 were particularly bad for me. Having a route with cars merging into your lane is sketchy, and I would avoid those. Stay safe out there.

43:17. I agree. In the city the big roads are safer and faster! Think about this... Look at all these cars that are not driving right now on this road, but they are parked just off it. They must be using this road to get to that parking space/house business etc...Is that tiny road with not enough room for even 1 car to drive safely really designed for that amount of people using it? I truely see a lot of potential for great cycling routes through Japanese cities, but no one in the Gov wants to do anything, and the Japanese themselves don't speak up about infrastructure problems :(

Do you ever throw your power meter pedals on your commuter bike, or do you find the numbers/ curve is too wonky because of the stop-and-go nature of the commute? Last time I was in Japan, all I kept thinking about was riding my bike there. Regardless of the route, looks like a nice ride to work, though I will echo other commenters and say that the river route looks a little bit nicer than pure road.

I'm guessing that Japan treat cyclists more as pedestrians, rather than road vehicles. I would like to know and understand Japanese road laws as they relate to bikes. In Britain cyclists are allowed to ride two-abreast for the most part, to allow easier communication in groups. Single file seems to be the rule in Japan, even when in a group. From the way Cruise took right hand turns, it seems that you can't turn right at crossroads on a bike. Cruise, can you confirm this?
@weir-t7y5 жыл бұрын
From what I've read they're similar to western nations although most western nations only allow sidewalk riding for younger riders exempting mixed use trails

I'll make a video about cycling laws in Japan soon. It is actually illegal to ride side by side here. It's one of the reasons most racers are pretty bad at riding in groups..
