My First Ride in 6 Months! Vietnamese Countryside Cycling Tour

This is my first bike ride in a VERY long time. I'm looking forward to getting back on our nice road bikes next week, but for now a nice mamachari ride will do. We're cycling in the Vietnam countryside in Thuong's hometown.

The new haircut looks great. I would always trust Vietnamese women in matters of aesthetics. I'm really enjoying these videos in Vietnam. I'd love to visit someday. I liked the yellow/brown color style on that bike. This video reminded me of when I used to visit my cousins and borrow any bike we could from a relative or friend and have fun riding around.

Nice to have you back. Yes it's something that you notice as a cyclist, you are cycling along a beautiful country road, listening to the birds and insects and feeling so happy and you come across some rubbish that has been dumped beside the road. Usually big items like settees or mattresses, and you think they had to put them in a car or van to get here, why not carry on to the free council tip. In some cases we have seen rubbish dumped within a few hundred yards of the council tip. It was funny watching you on that bike, I was waiting for the wheel to come off in a classic Keystone cops moment 😅

Man it felt so good to see and hear you again, dont get me wrong Thuong did great videos as well but i am used to you, your voice and your thaughts...been loosing weight an working on fitness against my back pain and some other serious stuff, i always watch your videos to do cardio on my trainingbike, already lost 70+ Pounds, and everytime i have a hard time to get up to training again i start with one of your videos, keep doing the good work my friend. A nice relaxing ride. I have not been off my bike for more than 7 days in 25 years, it must be awkward but has to be. I had the same bike experience from the locals whilst visiting Jamaica. My father-in-law said that any foreigner seen should be driving not biking.

Nice haircut for the special occasion. A longer hairstyle might be better in the States--maybe a ponytail would suit you? Cool video on those basic bikes. Why not enjoy a little outing on them? Grew up riding bicycles like those, but always had tools to fix things. Enjoyed the authenticity of this relaxing adventure. And, yes, like seeing the “dynamic duo” back on camera.

Very nice to see one of these videos again. A shame about those rusty old supermarket bikes, but it was funny. A more significant shame about the cars increasing. I hope people wake up, but it seems as there’s just so much inertia towards continuing the old polluting ways. Humbling riding bikes with no maintenance. Like when we were kids. Rode until the wheels fell off, and we would pick up the pieces, and keep riding them lol. That frame design on the Mtn bike she was riding looks eerily similar to my Trek Marlin 5 ....... hmmmmm :)

Now you know what racism feels like ! I am in a mixed marriage with 2 children who went to very white , very middle class schools and suffered because of their slightly darker skin. As for myself , my husband’s family are always referring to my way too pale skin. You cannot win,, there is intrinsic racism in most societies, whatever their colour. On a lighter note, it was lovely seing you cycling together again, even on rickety bikes ! Well done Thuong on the haircut . C’mon man! That was not racism. As he explained, that part of Vietnam does not see a lot of foreigners. Everyone is curious and they want to see. Don’t confuse curiosity with racism. As you saw, everyone was polite and some would say “hello”. I am half Japanese and live in the US. In my 63 years of life I can count on one hand how many times I have experienced a racist action from someone. If you always assume racism as your first thought, you will see it everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, racism does exist. But it is only as bad as you let it be in your mind. If you let it affect you, they win.

I can vouch from a life time of experience, that the most painful form of racism is actually the discrete , polite remarks which put you in your place as an outsider. I rode all over Hanoi and Saigon on that girly bike. Made damn sure I had all my tools, water, tiedowns and rain cape with me. I had the stem way too high and coming loose, oops. Axle nuts keep coming loose with too many attachments. Traffic was the FUN part to me. LOL.

Nice ride spoiled. LOL. That's why I've had 2 or 3 shoelaces in my pocket all the time for 50 years. And tools in my other pockets. I took my own tools on the plane when I flew over there the times I knew I was going to ride them jalopies. Those axel nuts always wiggle loose on those bikes unless it's rusted. That just goes to show how useless MTBs are in poor areas. I thought you both would have forgotten Japanese already. LOL. Still not spring in Canada.
