Worked. Like. A. Charm. 2 weeks ago, my speedo stopped working,and my turn signals would not cancel. Followed your video; especially snaking the sensor wire, ( great idea!). Popped the wires out of the connector, took pics of everything BEFORE I did it, put it back together and fired it up. Speedo works like brand new, and turn signals were self canceling. Happy to help. Sounds like your speedo is bad you should have some light. the sensor is going to stop the speedometer from working but the backlight should work. @@TwoWheelRocco I forgot to mention this seems to be a ground issue. I don't think the ground is coming from the sensor but I'm not sure. If I provide a ground on pin 10 of the 12 pin connector the speedo lights up but no numbers on the odo... ideas?

Thank you. Just bought a ‘99 1200 and the speedo wasn’t working but had power. Used this video to get the job done. My cable had two zip ties on it along the frame but other than that it was a nearly identical project. I ended up removing my rear exhaust pipe to more easily access the allen key screw as the extended socket allen ball wouldn't work for me. But I have after market short shot pipes so it wasn't too bad to take one off. Thank you for all of these videos.

Happy to help. I just finished one the other day a 2003 with the same ties on the frame, wasn't a problem everything went smoothly and I did remove the rear exhaust and the cover. Never had a problem with the speedometer on my bike but it’s good to know where the speed sensor is and how to replace. appreciate all your video’s. Right now I’m working on my bike I use your video to test and change the neutral switch. It was a perfect time to do it because I had to take the exhaust off, the crossover had a crack in it at the rear pipe. Then while I was at it might as well change the rear tire. And then I change the rear brakes. It’s starting to become a makework project. I’m just going over the whole bike because it’s 18 years old now and I’d like to do as much preventative maintenance so I don’t have any breakdowns. I’m actually a car/truck technician/mechanic so I don’t actually mind working on it. I just want to fix everything now so I don’t have to do anything on it for the next few years just change the oil and ride.

Thanks for the video! I ended up using a 3/16 Allen bit and a 1/4” tiny wrench and taping the bit to the round end on the tiny wrench with electrical tape. It seemed impossible to get the swivel Allen wrenches on it. I tried pivoting sockets and everything. I contemplated cutting my Allen wrench shorter but I didn’t want to mess up my Allen set. So I made the bit taped to the tiny wrench work…probably 25 turns or something, I lost count lol … didn’t fix my speedometer unfortunately…must be an issue with the needle and dial. I understand why “be patient” is mentioned more than once! Lol

Cheers for this, made getting it out a lot less painful. Couldn't find the swivel piece in the UK, least not without hefty postage costs, but instead ended up using a short allen key that fit the bolt, and an adjustable spanner and having to do small turns at a time to get the bolt out. Love my sportster, that is the single design decision I hate about it though, reversed terminals on the battery is a bit annoying but just looking in the right place really, replacing the speed sensor? I'm glad I only have to do it once right now and it'll last years lol

When you pulled out the green piece and said “this keeps everything honest”, does that need to be put into the new sensor for the new one to work properly? And what is it? Having some issues with my speedometer, just replaced the sensor but I didn’t replace the green piece, just left the new one as it.

Happy to help. You put that green piece and the orange piece I believe back and it keeps all the wires centered. The orange piece I believe is for waterproofing. Hey Rocco, i have a 01 Sporty 1200. My issue is my speedo arm doesnt move. Miles display but doesnt go up. Backlight works. I had replaced the speed sensor. But the issue didnt fix. Now here is what happened. Previous owner tried to charge the bike with a charged car battery. He crossed the terminals. Since then it stopped working. Im popping code D05. Speed sensor return shorted high (white). Any ideas? Since i replaced the speed sensor the only issue can be the wiring before the sensor cable right?

Hope all is well Roco I have a question hope you can give me an idea what it might be? I picked up a 2001 xlh883 sportster in mint condition 2 years ago with only 8000 miles on it bike ran fine up until last month it started to act up I would go for a ride get off the bike go in to a store or come back like half hr later and the bike will not start it cranks ok but doesn’t wanna start it has new wires new plugs new coil and new battery pulled out the plugs one at a time and grounded the plug to the cylinder head and no spark? If I let the bike sit like 2 hrs it will start right up again and if I go for a ride and turn it off and then start it right away it will start it’s only when I let it sit awhile I know an intermittent problem like that is hard to pin point but would think it can be the electronic module the one on that the right side were you have to drill out the rivets? And it doesn’t do it all the time I can go 2-3 weeks without a problem then all of a sudden it starts again. Sorry for the long message but I wanted to explain as much as I can to you. I just replaced the VSS(speed sensor) on my 2000 Heritage Classic. Still no speedometer or digital odometer. Engine light still on. It does work a little when stopping and starting. Is there something under the dashboard or speedometer that may be malfuctioning?

First checked all the wires in the back of the Speedo plug-in. If nothing, I would sauce out a speedo on eBay that's all that's left your speedometer. Good chance the wiring is in place and all you have to replace is that sensor. Let us know how it works out test it and make sure the light works when your ground it out has shown in the video. Hope this helps any questions. Just ask.

Hey I got a question about my 2004 883 Sporty. Since I've had the bike, there has been gasoline that has soaked into my air filter. It's not dripping with oil, but it is definitely saturated more or less. Is this an issue with the carb? My bike is equipped with Screamin' Eagle airfilter I think. Thanks!

Happy to help. How does she run and start in the morning? Take a look at your fuel inlet on the carburetor they know to have hairline cracks. Thanks for the video suggestion! I will try doing that! As for starting it, on a colder morning or if I haven't ridden in a couple days, she has to crank quite a few times to start. She has to crank for maybe 10 seconds before the engine tries to start.

Have a question, my front headlight and blinkers don’t work, I have the right blinker on but it stays on don’t blink and the symbol on the Speedo is solid and won’t turn off. Also the rear blinkers don’t work either, the rear break lights up but don’t get brighter when I hit the break. I’m lost on what’s going on I have a 2010 sportster 1200 low

I would bring it to the dealer and just have them put it on their machine and see what’s going on sounds like the module is going bad. But Harley has the machine to plug it in and you’ll know I don’t know what they charge but it’s well worth it get your bike straightened out.

Rocco, hope ur doing well. buddys 97 sporster speedo burnt-out. he replaced it with a old used one. went for a short ride, but it's not marking mileage still sitting at zero. I think there's some recalibration needed but we have no idea how to reset it. looked through your vids until I got tired of scrolling 😁. do you have a vid that shows how to reset it? thanks for all your help to the biker community.

Happy to help, The speedo that you bought is stating speed but not miles.. if the plug lines up and everything seems to work. I have an 01 road king speedometer goes back down to zero exactally at 52 mph every time I hit 52 as soon as I go under it comes back on. So basically it works fine under 52mph I have a d01set code. I replaced the sensor still nothing. I can’t find anything on this issue

You might have to remove the exhaust or at least loosen it and angle away from the sensor Make sure you test it. Usually they last a little longer than 4 years. Hi Rocco, Just found your channel, new sub now. On my 2004 XL883 Custom the speed sensor and the plug are different than the ones on your Sportster. Fortunately they are both in pretty much the same locations so I now know more than I did before finding your video.😁 Unfortunately 2 of the 3 oil lines are routed right over the top of the sensor and the 3rd one is in the opening you used to get your allen wrench in.🤷‍♂️None of them have enough slack to move them completely out of the way and there's no way I'm going to get 3 hands in that tiny space to hold them while I replace the sensor.😢 I guess it's a good thing that I won't need the string to get the plug and wires pulled. I can use it to tie the oil lines out of the way.😂 I do have the same connector that you disassembled the other half of in the wiring harness but it just has a rubber blank in it. The flat connector my speed sensor is wired into is mounted right next to it on the front of the fuse box instead the top. Routing the new plug to it won't be very hard once I use something like a welding rod to fish it under the oil lines. I will check the wires in the speedo to see if they are the same color as the ones in the connector before I even start tying oil lines up. 🤔 Thanks for the video. It helped. 🙏🙋‍♂️

Currently doping some custom on a 2001 Sporty and mine is totally different from this bike. I get a module right under the seat and didn0t see any connector for the speed sensor. My sensor also looks different. I couldn't find any corresponding wiring diagram to the bike I have in my workshop... The stock speedometer has this data bus Green/Violet cable so no signal I can use for my after market combo meter... Anyone with a clue?

@@TwoWheelRocco I really appreciate buddy. Actually I think I figured it out. Bike is from 2001 but I found a matching diagram for a 2005 xl883... Go figure... The Deutsch connector under the tank that goes to the instruments had only half of the colors matching according to the 2001 diagram but matched the 2005 diagram... But the color of the speed sensor wire to the module under the seat didn't match... It was on the right pin though so I'll simply get the signal from there for my after market meter and a pick on the coils should do the trick for the tacho. On the previous bike I built I made a sple circuit with two diodes and two resistors to get both coils impulses. I suppose it's gonna be the same on this one...
