You can get the ECO with a triangular grip, iirc. It’s called the ECO-T. Anyway, great video as always. I think I’ll save my money on that one. The non-posting cap is an issue for me. I’d lose it, I’m such a klutz haha.

Fantastic overview/explanation, as you always do.I love my ECO and I keep thinking about getting a Diamond 580, but there are so many other pens at that price point that I prefer.

I just bought the diamond 580 and I love it. I really like the demonstrator barrel. The diamond 580 writes so smoothly. I can write all day.

Despite the o-ring, I find the posted cap on my Eco still comes loose somehow. Maybe my nervous fingers rub it against my hand or something. Please consider repositioning your camera during writing samples so nib touching paper can be seen. Otherwise you might as well just write it in advance, if you like.

I received my second 580 (an RBT model) yesterday and, unlike my original 580 or my three Ecos, the new one has a pretty severe clip wiggle problem. There is information on FPN about correcting this by removing the inner liner with a pencil and rubber band, then use a slender 5mm hex wrench to tighten the inner nut. I've had to order a wrench and will then try this. Credit where due, I mailed Twsbi about the clip and had a reply in minutes. I did NOT expect such a prompt response.

The facets on the 580 has the advantage that the pen won't roll off the table. With all my other pens I have to be careful where I place them, but the 580 stays where I left it.

A nice, informational review. I use a TWSBI GO every single day, and I love it. It has completely sold me on piston fillers. Since I love my GO, I have looked at the Eco and the 580. The Eco wins on price and especially on posting. If I do not post the cap, it will disappear.

The eco uses a size 5 nib, the 580 uses a 5.5 size

Just to correct misguided information. Eco uses a smaller #5 nib that is not widely available which some people dub it as #4, #4.5 or #5.5 that means it doesn't take a standard #5. Some people successfully inserted standard #5 but it is not recommended as it may crack the pen. 580 on the other hand take a standard #5 which is widely available. The reason for this misguided information is that many people compared Eco and 580 and see that 580 has a bigger nib than eco thus deducing it as 580 having #6 while eco has #5 but in fact both are #5 just eco has a slightly smaller non standard #5 while 580 uses standard #5.

The 580 is more versatile than the Eco, You can swap nibs out and put different sizes on the 580. The nibs cost around $20 - 30 dollars each though

In my very recent experience, if you leave any ink in the 580, you can expect to have the internal materials degrade and have the top with the nib literally fall off of the pen (this is on their current version). Their customer service agent advised me of this as of today. For around $70, we can do much better than this pen. I do not recommend the pen or the company and really think the retailers should demand more data from the manufacturers on issues before they sell defective products like this. I hate to say this as I love all types of pens, but this one is out for me.

Sal About 18 months total with around a year in storage as I was rotating other pens. Interestingly, someone showed me a Wing Sung 3008 that they bought on Amazon for $4.00 and it looks, weighs and writes nearly identically to the TWSBI. There aren’t too many pen knock offs I can say that about.
@JonnyBurkholder

@@danliutikas I bought a 580alr on Amazon because I had some gift cards and wanted to get myself something nice. It arrived damaged, TWSBI customer service accused me of breaking the pen and told me if I was unhappy I could buy from another company. That's exactly what I plan to do. I know a lot of people think $60 isn't much to spend on a pen, but for me it's a lot, and when I drop that much on a pen, I expect it to write better than a 10 cent ballpoint pen out of the box. That has not been my experience with this pen

TWSBI customer service consists of one guy, Philip Wang, who believes he knows how everything can possibly happen and places the blame on customers. He showed no concern that their pens fall apart after a few months with ink even though their own blog (which he wrote) identified this issue. I’ve come to believe that they are even more of a snake oil company than I thought before trying to sucker people into buying a cheaply made product as some premium product. I presume Goulet Pens’ slick marketing helped them tremendously. I’m sticking with the tried and true manufacturers that actually make the various components themselves...folks like Lamy, Pilot, etc. If I want a cheap, plastic demonstrator pen, I’ll get the same or better quality of a TWSBI from the likes of a Wing Sung for pennies on the dollar.

Amen P.S. I bought a 4 pack of the Wing Sung pens to keep around the house and office with different color inks. They work great so far and I haven’t emptied them of ink fully yet. The nib isn’t the best, but very smooth. Considering they were $3 each...excellent option.

This was my experience, the top section simply came away from the body, by itself, I did not drop it or anything. So although the Diamond is a very pretty piston fill with a good ink capacity and reasonably good nib, it is too expensive for a pen that comes apart. It is ridiculous you cannot leave ink in it, that is as stupid as saying you cannot wear shoes in the rain! I am thinking about glueing it back together, though this would mean I would not be able to replace the nib unit. The Eco is much better value, I have a couple of these and they have not fallen apart and have been reliable writers, though sometimes I have to fiddle about to get the ink to flow right. The experience of customer service means I will not buy another TWSBI, but I do really prefer piston fillers, I a lot of writing and standard converters do not hold much. The other thing with TWSBI is that there is no flex in the nibs. I want TWSBI looks and piston fills, Lamy engineering and a Platinum Falcon or Noodler’s Ahab flex nib.

So far my experience with Eco had been more painful than Wing Sung pens The feed doesn't make perfect seal with the body, resulting ink falling off the feed, and to the pages Fix is to make a paper gasket on the end of the feed (with a hole poke to let the stem goes through) The other problem is the skipping. Somehow I fixed it (ish) The only good thing is I learned about pen fixing for a bit

I use an Eo with Kaweco green ink. I also use a 700R and a VAC mini - both with black ink. I find the Eco the easiest and best to post. Does the 580 share the same nib with the 700R which has a great nib.

Thanks for the video. I was wondering of the Eco medium and broad can get line variations, aka can get broader lines if the nib is pressed down more and thinner lines if less pressure is applied. I want to use it for calligraphy. Another question, you don't ever replace fountain pen nibs out of wear do you?
@unsharpen
@unsharpen 2 жыл бұрын
No the nibs doesn’t really wear out. They are harder than the paper so it’s not a major issue

On Eco: Awful pen for its section nubs near nib. Very annoying reminder to write horizontally, which is how poor writers write. Edge of section near nib must be round and smooth, which Chinese manufacturers could have done, if they had any brains (they don't). We are not children that need to be reminded to write horizontally for heaven sake. Some write with grip close to nib and will hit nubs in this case. Smallish nib makes one want to write nearer to the dreaded nubs with Eco. Of course you can grip away from nubs, higher up on section, but what good pen maker ever forces you to do this? Answer: None.
