And if faculty are canceling classex to protest, their students ought to SUE for refunds!!!!!!!
@Spitfire515O6 ай бұрын
Y’all got this one wrong. I live in Austin. The protest had many agitators who were harassing and threatening people, on and near the campus, all the way out to the North Lemar Blvd sidewalks at times. They were setting up encampments that blocked pedestrian throughways. At the same time they were filling up the areas with their crowd, causing access issues and violating fire code. Some of them even seemed to get offended if people overtly tried to ignore them, mouthing off at times to people who simply did not want to engage or acknowledge them. [remember, these people don’t understand facts and history and any differing perspectives are met with shouts and slurs. Etcetera. Point being, these folks were acting in ways that are counter to a productive protest. The people’s right to assembly doesn’t always apply to aggressive mobs, which at its root, is what this was. Not all of them, but as a whole it was a disgrace to the nation’s proud history of protest and civic activism.

I'm glad FIRE is consistent on this. Eventhough FIRE is a right wing organization. One thing to note ...one BIG thing...the pro-Palestine protests are not anti-Semitic or a hate speech, just ask the Jewish voices for peace and the other Jewish organizations that are leading voices in these marches !
@huckfin15987 ай бұрын
FIRE really dropped the ball on this one. With this logic the Berkeley “peaceful protest” against MILO back around 2016 was free speech

did FIRE sue berkely ? probably not

All these comments blasting FIRE for this stance are forgetting how the story begins. The story begins with "law enforcement" attacking, battering, and arresting the press, the journalists, covering the protest. The video shows it. Get with the program or protest elsewhere.

I'm just glad America is so diverse... Anyone else? It's so exciting seeing the strength and love that diversity provides..... It's not being used to weaken our country and to limit freedoms... NOT AT ALL! In fact the opposite is true! We're so much closer now. I can't wait to see how much closer and stronger we'll be in 10 years...

I support you - literally, with money - but they were deliberately violating rules, including blocking access to campus and explicitly advising protesters to wear masks. You are wrong on this one.

Ditto. I love the FIRE and my daughter, an Emory law student has supported them all three years and indeed volunteered but this isn’t your typical protest.

No students were prevented from attending classes except the ones who were indiscriminately detained by cops.

Wrong title. When you are right, FIRE, you're usually on point - but when you miss, you really miss. An accurate title would be more like "People who were told to disperse and had zero right to refuse were dispersed. "
@f1shyboi7 ай бұрын
Yes! Being asked to disperse immediately invalidates the first amendment. This famously happened during the civil war, when General Robert E Lee was asked to disperse by General Grant, resulting in the south’s surrender and the repatriation of the confederacy.

I agree with FIRE about free speech, but to say these were peaceful protests is a stretch. Also, threats of violence speech isn’t protected speech which is also pervasive in these protests.
@jodyhammett62927 ай бұрын
Evidently you sound like a bootlicker it wants to readdress the government we got amendments for a reason our people put amendments up for a reason you've been a boot liquor is somebody that's against the amendments so shut the fuk up if you don't like it and move to another country that's my advice to you boot liquor
@rarefruit23207 ай бұрын
Not protecting speech seems very un-American to me. I always thought a crime was when someone created lose, injury, or harm. Somehow it’s now a crime if you could possibly one day commit a crime
@DiodeMom7 ай бұрын
Depends on the speech and if it’s targeted to an individual. It’s my understanding that some of these protests have spurred violence toward a specific group. Actual violence, not threat of violence. FIRE, ya done goofed.

agreed, we should not be funding a religious terrorist organization that attacked a US aircraft carrier and killed thousands of americans, claims their race is chosen by god and all other races are cattle, you know Sanhedrin 57A, Hadaramine 20 B, Choszen Hamiszpat 348, etc.
