Ian, thanks very much for referring to mini-drivers as 2-woods. It's what they are, after all. While they are not for everyone, the 2-woods can help some golfers fill a gap between the driver and the next club, which again for many of those golfers should be either 4- or 5-woods.

On the golf ball issue, Today's Golfer did a great ball test and the reality was that if you are looking at the the difference between X ball and the same ball non X version there is no statistically significant difference - some marginal gains in distance with the X version but highly unlikely to be statistically significant. It is only when, as Ian did, you are looking between the X version of one manufacturer and the non-X version from a different manufacturer that you are likely to see significant difference. And the overall takeaway from today's Golfer, the Wilson Staff Model is one heck of a good ball

The G430 max 10k (with new ventus blue) has been a complete unicorn for me: super stable, the shallower face, heavier head that more easily gets me to preferred swing weight. Last time I measured, 15.8* launch and 2200 spin. Once I started trusting the ball flight being more neutral, it’s been incredible. I tried many other drivers when I got fit, and I have had many drivers before the current one. The issue you have with 10k, is that you created wrong expectations. After all the years in the business, what made you think that one dimension in driver construction space would dominate all other? Think about it!!

I think if Ping had taken their product to market as the G430 Max LST it wouldn't be a part of this 10k hype critique. When you all reviewed the driver, the frame was "this isn't better than a well-fitted Max." Which, definitely. But the question is, are there enough players who when properly fit, do best with something between the LST and the Max? I _think_ Ping and most fitters have concluded yes. Or put differently, if Titleist can justify creating GT4 even though GT3 exists and when well-fitted, can do all the jobs, why such hate for Ping's bridge product?
@MEAT02 ай бұрын
I never got the impression this was between the LST and Max. It’s marketed as the most forgiving driver in the Ping line, which to me says the normal Max would be in the middle.

While I understand you are cautioning people not to think that a minor shaft change (from ventus red to ventus black) is going to have a major difference in launch and spin, could you not get a fairly substantial change in launch and/or spin variance by changing the model along with flex, such as a 65 g regular flex ventus red vs a 65 g tour stiff ventus tr black (assuming you could get the same strike with each due to the weight being the same)? With the same head I would think you could get some pretty high variance in launch and spin (also potentially speed and dispersion, but that's another issue). If not, then you guys (or MyGolfSpy) need to talk to the shaft manufacturers because they are the ones marketing the differences between the shafts being launch and spin differences.

The core was definitely the best of the 3. But ultimately the burner mini is the only one I kept. I recently picked up a GT2. I hit it 10 times and it seemed like a possible keeper. Unfortunately there was a tiny crack at the back of the crown, so I sent it back. I just got the new one last night, so I’ll need to do more testing before I decide. But the one constant has been that mini driver

It’s not that the shaft doesn’t affect launch/spin at all, it’s that the change is only marginal, so if you’re expecting drastic changes (eg 4deg launch, or 1000rpm spin), you’re not going to get that from a shaft alone. You’ll see far more impact from a different change, like loft of the head.

Completely disagree with the mini driver being a "best". For 90%+ of golfers there is nothing a mini driver can do that a full sized driver can't do better (other than hitting off the ground, but lets be honest that is what the 3 wood is for and most golfers suck with the 3 wood and would be even worse off the ground with a "2 wood"). If you match them loft for loft and shorten the full size driver's shaft to match the length of the mini, it will be more forgiving and a better fairway finder
@michaelrandold46562 ай бұрын
I use the driver as it was intended, however I prefer the mini driver on shorter holes that historically I used the three wood off the tee. As you yourself stated, a lot of people struggle with the three wood. The mini driver is soooooo much easier to hit off that fabled three wood tee box. That being said, I still use the three wood of the deck. The mini driver is best in that category, by miles and miles. I wouldn’t sacrifice the distance you get from a driver off normal holes, as the mini driver is minimally straighter but tends to be 20-30 yards shorter (40 for me actually). You have to play the mini in its niche.
@williamhartman73862 ай бұрын

What about the fact that an iron fitting is useless as you can only get fit into a 7 iron. Are you supposed to know a whole set is good for you by hitting a 7 iron? Ridiculous.

How do you think we’ve been so successful all these years by just testing with 6iron Alan?? It’s not by luck I can tell you that. I understand that some who haven’t fit before would struggle to do it but a skilled fitter can do it no issue at all.

@@ianfrasergolf I think golfers now should demand more for a fitting. Testing a 6 or 7 iron give us no idea of how a set is going to play out. Getting fit for a driver, putter, wedge yes as it’s only one club but potentially buying a set of 4-PW and only being able to hit the 6 iron is so poor. It’s more about being a salesman than a club fitter. Absolutely not getting at you guys as you obviously do a great job but just in general.

@@ianfrasergolfI’m from Ireland and coming to Dallas on Boxing Day for a week. How’s about your guys give me a proper fitting. I see I’m only 15 mins drive from Mockingbird Lane when I arrive 😊
