There are two requirements for being a furry: 1: the appreciation towards anthropomorphic animal characters. 2: genuinely consider yourself a furry. If you do not consider yourself a furry, then you aren’t. If you do, then you are. It’s that simple. I personally consider myself a furry, because I really enjoy designing anthropomorphic characters and I love the very welcoming community that comes with it, but just because I like a certain thing doesn’t mean I have to take on the role of “furry” if I don’t want to.

I'm a furry, and I have been for about 2 years and half, before this I loved drawing my wolf characters and pony characters, and loved cosplay, When I found out what furries were I was a bit creeped out but eventually grew to love it and only a few months ago I finally received my first fursuit. I am a furry. That's it. Nope, I don't go out in animal costumes. I can't afford that. But, yes, I like anthro animals. What about it? I don't know why people care so much whenever or not someone is a furry. Guys, it's just a fandom, it's not a big deal... I love furries, but I actually feel a bit guilty sometimes on how we get so much hate. Yeah, memes and jokes are funny, but... They stop being funny after a while. Why is it still so much of a deal? Literally minutes ago I was in a comment section where people were saying "furries should be killed by everyone just as the jewish got killed by nazis". I get there are always kind of dark jokes out there specially on topics so serious, but seeing so many people attacking eachother, plus envolving such awful events that affected so many people, isn't fun at all. There will always be dark parts in ALL fandoms, and people might see it more in ones like the MLP or the furry fandom because they are so big, but we are not all that way... There are true beauties in this communities, not just r34 and yiff. We have made our mistakes... No, actually PEOPLE have made their mistakes. Not all of us. An entire community shouldn't be blamed for the mistake of ONE person, or ONE group. It's not our fault, okay? We're... Just trying to share our love to something... I don't consider myself a furry but I follow many artists and other creators that are. I find the community interesting but what they can do and create is amazing. The bad rep behind furrys is just not right. Sure there are people within the community who do certain "things" but its the same in literally every other community or fandom. So to answer your question that you ask at the end of the video. I was not really known about the furry fandom until my co worker told me and took me to my first bronycon and furrycon. I saw first hand how nice and big the fandom and I kinda fell in love with the fursuits they have. I always loved animals and made ocs of animals. My username is wolf heart after all and my mlp oc does have a job that evolves animals so I’m a way I kinda am a furry but at the same time don’t do a whole lot with them as I do with the mlp fandom. Some say that if you are a Brony you are a furry. Which I can see it but it’s only Opinions really. Thanks for this video I enjoyed seeing you at last years bronycon.

If one did a Venn Diagram of the two fandom the overlap would be nearly complete, however the furry fandom would be the larger circle as it encompass far more. It is possible, however, to like MLP for the content more than the character design and be indifferent towards anthro.

And I just have to point out that anthro animals doesn't mean animals walking on two legs, anthropomorphising is putting any human characteristic on. Ty, I can happily and proudly say that I am a Furry. Yes, I have many interests and am out right weird, but my experience with the fandom has been nothing but great. They accept anyone and everyone for who they are, faults be damned. I know I have a lot of issues, but they always seem to just fade away anytime I've been to a meet up. They've supported me in many ways, and honestly make me feel like I'm part of a great big fluffy/scaly/feathery family. I may be judged harshly, given the bad rep that furries have, but that's just because many focus on the very few who do bad or strange things, instead of asking about the majority of us who don't, and just want to have fun. Also yes, we take suits very seriously. Cost me $300 plus shipping just to get a head built.

One thing that’s always interested me about my own furry tendencies is how tame I am, despite the tendencies I do have being rather strong. I mean, I have zero interest in the fur suits, and I don’t like them in THAT way (as in not my fetish), but a lot of furry designs just click for me, and that’s often all I need. I express my furry-ness by watching Zootopia, hanging out with the Rito in Breath of the Wild, maining Pip in Paladins... ...and, oh yeah, I have my own furry avatar that I use to do reviews on Equestria Amino.

I may not go to conventions or have a fursuit, but I'm practically a furry. I view some furry sites a couple times a week. I have a fursona (a bat/dragon hybrid), that despite basically being a furry my whole life I still haven't bothered to take the time to draw it or make a ref sheet because of other things I'd rather do. Though I don't do much else other than that so perhaps I'm not furry. As for furries themselves. I love them, my closest friends usually are furries. I used to have some massive anxiety when I was younger, then I met a group of furries to hangout with in real life and that made it so my anxiety wasn't so bad. Even if I'm not hanging out in a furry focused place and not showing any signs I'm a furry, furries just seem to find me and we become good friends. Just finding them from playing with randoms. Whatever the case is, I've never been able to avoid furries, they are everywhere, but why would I want to? As for being afraid of fursuits, I used to hate/get creeped out by them too. However, I got over that creeped out feeling from some furry friends having me interact with their fursuiter friends. Made me really like it and I thought it was really cool/cute. Hard to describe, but the best fursuiters are the ones that make you feel like you're talking to a character and not the actual person. It's a very unique experience. Also, people love the heck out of their suits and love to share them, so sometimes they'll say that I should try wearing their head. Feels amazing everytime, and is an easy way to just destroy any anxiety you have. So I can definitely see why people would want them.

It's complicated, furry is a blanket term to describe a collective of smaller subgroups the same way Catholic or Protestant or Methodist or even Jehova's Witnesses ALL fall under the Christian blanket term. So Sonic, Ponies, Cartoons like Loony Toons or Tex Avery and such, Disney movies with talking animals, they are all things that have their own groups that are obsessed with them. By using a Deer for everything, and given the pony inspirations, and your enjoyment of those aspects, it by the definition makes you a furry. You don't need to go to cons or participate on furry sites, by your involvement with a branch of the massive tree that is the furry fandom, such as being part of the pony community, interacting with the pony community, provide content for the furry community, you are part of it. That said, while by all intents and purposes as well as definition, you fall under what is a "furry" there is nothing wrong with not calling yourself one. I myself have gone to fur cons, have tons of friends that are furries, I never was one to be at the center of furry, was like you and never called myself furry, but eventually just accepted that I was given my tendency of using Pony and Animal Icons on everything on all platforms over real pictures of myself, I started out on deviantART drawing and making friends there, and once dA got kind of anti-furry I followed people I liked at the time to Furaffinity and Weasyl and even Inkbunny because I liked the art they drew. Eventually, I stopped deluding myself and accepted one way or another, I am a furry even if I don't participate really, I provide nothing directly of worth to the community, prefer the pony community more, and I too am freaked the fuck out by fursuits. And a lot of other people are as well, bit still count as furries. Even fursuits aren't a furry exclusive thing, some people use suits as an escape, including people that work as mascots for places, and there are actual ponysuits that have been made too for Pony conventions fairly specifically, which may be because pony fandom is a major branch of the furry community, as much as bronies may hate that idea and have fanatics that will fight and deny such a fact till the day they die. Like I said it's complicated and there is no 100% yes or no answer to it because all signs point at yes, but just because you like a specific aspect, rather than a larger part of the term, it's easy to say no. To put it another way, you are explaining all the ways you are, say, Catholic, you go to Church on Sunday, practice Lent, associate mainly with other Catholics and other people that are Christian even if personally Mormons or Jehova's Witnesses and their beliefs don't really mesh with how you see things, but when asked if you are Christian, you say no, it's the same thing. It's true you "aren't a furry unless you say you are a furry" in the sense, that someone can generally find men attractive as a man themselves, but not be gay just because they say they aren't. There is that aspect of denial, it's more saying and believing it yourself and protect yourself in a way if you aren't ready to accept an aspect. The lies we tell ourselves can define us, just as easily as calling yourself a failure will make you become a failure, you can actually be a failure in every term of the word, but refuse to be called a failure and keep pushing till you stop being one and amount to something more than that just by believing hard enough and resisting. TL;DR: By association with pony fandom and your tendency to use a deer for everything, and the community you hang out with and post content for being made up of fans of ponies and actual furries, you are for all intense and purposes a furry, your interests are just relegated to the sub-genera of "furry" which is the pony fandom. You appear to be a furry, you portray yourself as a furry, are part of the furry community even if only interested in a small segment of the fandom, associate and communicate and support members of the furry fandom, but ultimately, only you can define yourself, even if you fit the term to a T if you are not ready or just unwilling to accept it, in your own mind, no one can tell you otherwise.

I'm glad you made this video, as you made some fair points on a fandom that I'v been a part of since the mid-80's. Yes, furries are often weird, but I happen to think that weird is good for you. I love watching the creative human soul express itself, weather in the brony or furry community. I guess you could say I'm a fan of both, but don't have furry friends and have never gone too a con. I have an OC or fursona, but have never done anything with him or have had any professional art drawn of him. Maybe someday when I get a fursuit I'll become a furry. But until then, I have to get through school and get out on my own first before my furry self is set free.

That's pretty much me. But, you can still consider yourself a brony or furry, even if you're not very active. I know nobody in real life who's a furry, nor have I ever been to a con. But, I still consider myself one, because I'm planning on drawing my fursona more in the future, maybe even get a suit in a few years, who knows. Right now, I haven't told anyone, and I don't really want to. Anyways, I think you can still be a furry or brony, even if you aren't super active in it. It's just what you want to be identified as.

You're like the 4th person I know that made this kind of video, so I might potentially do one from the other side, that I am a furry and what does it mean to me? The best way for me to describe if you're a furry is if you watch MLP, Star Trek, Dr Who or anime, do you consider yourself a Brony, a Trekkie, a Whovian or an Otaku. Also as a Furry I'm with you that Fursuits are a bit too much. And I had people who hearing that I'm a furry and I don't have one are genuinly shocked. Also I recommend you look up "Down the Rabbit Hole" on Furries, he covers pretty much most key notes on the history of the fandom from the 70-80s.

You can express an interest in animal or anthropomorphic animal characters, but still not be a part of the community surrounding them. Furry as charged!! I have had both good and bad experiences with the fandom, but mostly good. Haven’t been to any of the cons yet cause money.. but I love watching lots of the funny animations that are made and especially love the vids of the fandoms famous comedians.. listening to Two and Kage always makes me smile.. and Cerberus’ vids are always a mix of weird, cute, and hilariously violent. This fandom helped me through some of the hardest times in my life and I will always be apart of it cause of that.

To be completely honest, I went into this video with my own strong assumptions, but you presented a very good point of discussion. Sure, you may represent yourself online by using an anthropomorphic character, but it would indeed be pretty disingenuous to self-identify as a furry if you have no real intention to participate in that community. What or who is considered or not considered furry has been a point of debate for ages, both within and outside of the furry fandom, and despite that, I think you did a great job of explaining your reasoning.

I have some close friends, some of which became flurries because they saw me wearing my tail (what I do everyday) and found their confidence from that. That has always been a source of pride, making people more comfortable with who they are. The bad times would be attending LondonFurs. I'm happy with my tail in public everyday, but I'm still rather shy, especially around other furs new to me. Because of that, I haven't enjoyed LondonFurs. The people there know each other and just don't seem to welcome new people that are as shy as I. If you're confident, you'll have a great time there, but for me, just makes me want to cry. For me, it's about the artwork, my close friends, and being who I am. Furries also teach lessons in friendship and acceptance, and learning from them, I decided to give Mlp a try. One of the best things I have ever done. I love Mlp now and have done since 2017, and it's channels like yours that bring moments of joy when needed most. Thank you for the great videos 😊

I know this video has been up for a couple weeks already, but I just stumbled upon it. I'm a furry myself, and to me, it's your choice to decide to become a part of the fandom and even though you do like animals and have an OC and/or a fursona it doesn't entirely mean you're a furry. Also you don't even need to have a fursuit! In fact, most furries in the fandom don't own a fursuit. I joined the fandom because I was bullied in all my school years and I never really had very many friends. I joined the furry fandom because they accept you for who you are no matter how weird, no matter what you've been through and yes we are a kind, generous, and supportive bunch. I joined the furry fandom because I didn't know where else to go. And I'm glad I did. I'm making friends, I'm gaming, doing artwork, and I feel like myself. That's what it's all about. It's a hobby and sometimes an expensive hobby, but it's still a hobby. Full of creativity, kindness, support, and we have alot of fun.

I love the fandom when the drama is little at times where I just love seeing furry stuff, for me it's helped with my mind and a stress reliever for me. Being able to talk to another with something in common to discuss first and then branch off to other topics.
