I have a Tyco Royal Blue in the box with a Murphy's Mart price sticker still on the box - and a couple of Tyco RC turnouts with Kmart price stickers on the packaging!

When I got back into model railroading in 1980 or so, I bought a few cheap cars and locos after Christmas to build my collection, but soon learned that those old locos only worked about 6 weeks or so before they died out and quit running reliably. The cars, like Tyco, had the very cheap wheels and trucks and failed to reliably couple and uncouple and didn't take Kadee couplers very easily and the bolsters required some modification to accept better trucks, which made the cars just too much work to make them usable. So, I stopped buying the cheaper sets like Tyco, Bachmann, and AHM and started collecting the better quality models like Atlas, Con-cor, Roundhouse and Athearn. Found out years later that Bachmann improved their quality drastically and Mantua and Tyco were basically the same manufacturer, so those models formed the majority of my railroad with some improvements and modifications. That's where things stand today with my rolling stock and locos. I understand that some folks really enjoy collecting Tyco and other cheaper brands from back in the day and I enjoyed watching your collection grow with this set of Tyco equipment. Glad you found a near mint collector's set!

The Tyco stuff is what I had as a kid. I run it sometimes, but most of that old stuff from the 70's and 80's I collect and want to display sometime. Recently I have gotten more into running the newer stuff. Just picked up my first Scale Trains Revit Counter locomotive.

@@VintageRoadRail The Tyco Power Torque motors will last a long time, but they need to be babied and treated with the utmost care - they need to be lubed probably every couple months, and drops of oil placed on the motor bearings every - hours or so. Use a toothpick to put a dot of grease on the gears - too much will ruin it! You can only run them with a few cars at a time for the most part - pulling a longer train once in a while should be alright, but the more often you pull long trains with them, the more likely you are to damage the gears. And hair or dust is likely to choke these to death! These are sensitive motors, and can last a long time if meticulously cared for, but easily broken if not.

When I was a kid, my dad used to buy the cheap-ass hot dogs that Corn King sold. I had a Tyco train set but did not know that THIS existed.

I wonder if Tyco missed the brake wheel on this one - with their level of quality control, I wouldn't be too surprised!
@VintageRoadRail Жыл бұрын
Tyco quality definitely took a nose dive in the 80s.

@@VintageRoadRail My 80's stuff is holding up reasonably well considering how much I use it - I have a Santa Fe GP20 that came in my Rail Master 72 set and I was blown away by how well it ran - I didn't have high expectations - but it ran like new! Sadly, the dip in quality control often happens when a great company is bought out by another one that doesn't care as much.

Just a question, for any of your vintage sets, do you use or try using its og dc transfromer/controller or do you just run it on your newer tracks? I'm asking cause I picked up a pretty neat vintage walthers set and I tested it on my bachmann ez track to make sure the locomotive runs well and it does as the entire set seems to be in almost new condition. I just haven't set up it's track and used its controller.
@LasheyTheFister Жыл бұрын
Neat tyco set by the way, i hope to get me one soon.
@VintageRoadRail Жыл бұрын
Hey, great question! I don't use the original controller or track. As a general rule I don't run the sets often either, more of a collectable. But when I do run them I don't want to risk using that old controller and track.
@LasheyTheFister Жыл бұрын
@VintageRoadRail great 👍🏼 I appreciate the answer. I was debating whether or not to test it in its original track and controller but one of the wires seemed abit worn out. I'll take your advice and follow that rule. I appreciate the response

got this set back in '86' by sending in proof of purchase from corn king bacon.ran it 2 times only at xmass and put it back in the shipping box .. the family called it 'the bacon train' as i told my sons we got for free because we ate so much of corn king bacon..love your videos and track and this has inspired me to build a track again after 40 years..huge thanks!.p.s..any plans to run an old tyco passenger car set?

That's awesome that you want to get back into the hobby, it's lots of fun! I also got back into it after 35 + years. I currently don't have any Tyco passenger cars, but I can try and track down a few an run them in a future video. Thanks for watching!

Thanks, I do love these old promo sets. In addition to my videos I am working on a web site to document all these sets. That way folk can see a complete set and know what they need to complete theirs. Problem is my web coding is out of date. My web site would look like something out of 1997. lol
