Again Thanks for all your help and encouragement through your videos - I know my tying has improved significantly especially when I finally took your advice and "If you don't like it, back it up and do it again". My sons appreciate the flies a lot more now.

I had also an old,really old coffeegrinder. I made the best and all sorts of dubbing with it. Old fur from granny's coats got me years of perfect dubbing basic. Got to get a grinder again. It got lost in a period that I didn't had time to tie,or fish sadly. A new one costs only 15 euro. So a second hands must be out there of way better quality. Thanks for reminding me of this possability!

Quick and easy, I'm tying this pattern since CDC is used in Germany. Your dubbing is my favourite for nymphs, especially with tungsten. For the sedge body I use another CDC feather, tied in at the tip, twisted several times an then turning around the shank: that makes a beautiful tapered body! Perfect for dry flies! But I really wonder, why you don't use barbless hooks. No reason for the panic-barb!

Hi Dr. Wolfgang Stoltenberg, It is a very good dubbing like you said certainly worth using on many other patterns..I do use barbless hooks and if I do use a barbed hook I always debarb them and I do prefer to fish with them even when I want to take a fish home.. All the very best Davie

Great fly Davie. When would you use this type of fly? Is one season better than another? I live in the north eastern part of the states and our trout can be particular about what they'll hit on.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 11 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael Mullen, Most sedge/caddis hatches here in the UK happen throughout the whole season but it's best in the summer months and this colour is one of the best..Seasons do vary due to the weather, as we could have a wet summer and the fly life can be hard to find so it can vary because of this but most times things are as normal... Hi Davis Elder, I use a Krups Coffee Grinder to mix all my dubbings like the one I used in the video. What I do is I use a small amount of a natural fur and then add in cut fibres from a patch of deer hair which makes for a very good mix for caddis flies both for dries, wets and nymphs... I hope this helps you understand it a bit more and that it encourages you to try it as it will give you some really nice dubbing for your flies... All the very best Davie

hi davie ive just took up fly tying about 3 weeks and i have made a lot of flies from watching your videos. i was just wondering if you know how to tie a flie known as a shimmy that was popular on carron valley . your videos are superb as well .
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul Thomson, I haven't came across the fly called the shimmy but when I did a search I found a black lure with a hackle down the body, it's tied very like the pattern I have attached for you to see, just leave out the rubber legs and you'll have much the same style as the Shimmy... I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie kzbin.info/www/bejne/goGpZJSuYtlqfbs

Brilliant fly once again, Davie. Maybe you can help me figure out what's wrong when I start winding hackle. Sometimes I just can't get the fibers to stand vertically, as the hackle begins to rotate right after I start winding it on. It seems completely random (sometimes it winds on nicely... sometimes it doesn't), and I still haven't found a way to control it. Am I missing any trick? Thank you very much in advance. Best regards João
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 11 жыл бұрын
Hi João, I'm glad you liked the fly..Theres two main reasons for a hackle do this, one is the stem being thick which can cause it to roll so what I do is wind it over some fine dubbing like rabbit which will help lift the fibres, the other is wind the hackle over an uneven layer of thread which will do the same that's why I alway tidy up the tying area so this doesn't happen... I hope this helps you in some way... All the very best Davie

Great fly Davie! I find your videos so helpful and informative, thank you for taking the time to put them together for us. This fly seems to be a very close approximation of the Stimulator flies. Do you feel they would work similarly?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I'm glad you enjoy the videos and that they have helped you in some way as I do enjoy making them when I get the chance which is not as often as I would like.... I would say that this pattern would work very well but if you add some deer hair on top of the CDC wing it would give more of a stimulator look and profile... Thank you again for the kind comments... All the very best Davie

Hello Davie, I was wondering where you get your CDC feathers from. Beautiful fly, are you a robot? - Austin

Hi Austin, I bought the CDC from Cookshill Tackle, I would recommend both types they sell as they can be used on many flies...I wish I was a robot sometimes as I could shut down from time to time... Here is a link; www.cookshill-flytying.co.uk/cdc.htm All the very best Davie

Okay i will give them a look. Thank you so much for sending me the link. Also just out of curiosity, I was wondering; what your favorite fly is/caught the most fish with, and what your favorite fly to tie is. Seriously you are probably one of if not the best fly tiers in the world, is there anything that you can't tie? Thanks for everything - Austin

Hi Austin, I would say the pheasant tail nymph tied with the copper wire which I have on youtube has caught me more fish than any one fly that I have in my box but to be honest I really like to fish dries every chance I get..I have many dries on youtube which have a place in my box which do well for rivers and lochs..I appreciate your very kind words..
