Davie, Just learned about paraloop. Thought I was gonna have to buy a gallows tool. Your idea of using UV just saved me some money. Thanks so much.

Davie, I would love to see this retied as it would make for a great midge pattern here in America in day smaller sizes like a 18, which would be more like a 16 on the modern hooks. As for Peccary, it is actually a rodent, one of the worlds largest, that can be found in the Southwestern United States. It is a desert dweller that runs in social packs often, and is more like a pig in behavior. Known by most Americans as a javalena, it can be a feisty and down right mean little critter, but man the flies that can be tied with the bristles is rather beautiful. Anyhow, if tied in a similar fashion on a grub style hook, it would be somewhat easier to keep the low hanging thorax and continue the tie as it was done before, but obviously with fewer materials needed. The top of the abdomen reminds me very much of a Griffith’s gnat, which is why it immediately resonates as a good midge cluster or single midge pattern. Either way, it would be worthy of an updated retie, if you’re up to it? If materials are needed, just say the word. The way I have recently begun to look at Peccary bristles is that it is the equivalent of cree hackle but in hair form if that makes much sense? It’s coloration going from black to white and then transitioning back to brown gets us the coloration we are often looking for. As for the fiber, it has the diameter and thickness or stiffness of elk hair, but the strength found often in Moose mane that has been soaked. Anyway, just the thoughts of an obsessed, overthinking, and dedicated fly fishing and tying nut. Also wondering if the bristle was soaked before wrapping and before flattening it if it would behave a bit better for us, I’ll likely try myself?

Amazing methods Davie a true master of your craft .I would not of thought for one second of putting UV resin on a antron post then tying it on the front near the eye to form the almost hump of badger hackle , would a grizzly be as well presented .One thing the you also give to the beginners that watch your u tube presentations and that is the basics ,easy methods to overcome the expensive tools that seem to do the trick but you do it better with using easier more organic ways ,its always excellent watching you

Hi Davie. I was reading a fly tying book which mentioned 'Paraloops' & 'gallows' tool. Thought I'd look through your video's and here I am. Great job without the tool. I did watch another video where the tool was used and it did nothing but get in the way ! Many thanks for showing an alternative.

I tied up a few of these before seeing this video, and found a different way to wind the hackle without a special tool. I tied the post in, rotated the vise upside-down, then using hackle pliers I hung some weight from the post. This kept the post stable for wrapping.

Love the ingenuity and the pragmatism of saying use what you've got! Great tying. Unfortunately for me I've got too many thumbs to manage this pattern, and I haven't got a gallows either, but I've an idea how to make one, if it works I'll give this a try.

Hi Davie, You did very well without the gallows tool. We call that fly style a "hackle stacker" in my region. It works well as a spinner pattern also. Thanks, Harold

Nice tie, I have a gallows tool on my Norvise, I use the norvise for fast tying and the Regal as well. I don't have an attachment for every vise, not necessary. Anyway, Peccary is available on eBay. Cheap enough. All the best to you and yours for a wonderful Holiday Season. Sean

Hi Davie, Merry Christmas to you......I am looking for a new pair of scissors, however none of the shops around here have what i am looking for. I am looking for scissors with large loops, and it looks as if your scissors are like that, would you be so kind to let me know what kind of scissors you use. And thank you for sharing your skills, it is very helpfull for me, i even "hear" you when i am tying :-) Keep up the superfine work. /Morten

Hi Morten, Merry Christmas to you as well...I use an all-purpose 4inch tungsten which just have normal size loops and are the ones I would use most of the time. I also have a small pair of Anvil Midge scissors which have open loops and can be adjusted by bending them out to suit your fingers, I've attached a link to them for you to see...www.amazon.com/Anvil-Ice-Tempered-Scissors-Model/dp/B0006ZYGFO All the very best Davie
