Davie I am one of many who have greatly benefited from your video's. Sure we buy what material we can't do without. However, collecting inexpensive fur, feathers, bits of yarn, craft materials, etc is something many of us have done for years. This is what we do to make it possible to participate in this sport. My hat is off to you for providing an economical source for Jungle Cock feathers. Thanks.

Reminds me a bit of Black Green Highlander. And using the substitute JCs is probably the future, as the real thing is getting increasingly hard to get legally.

Hi Davie, A great looking Tube Fly pattern. I do use the artificial JC eyes for some of my flies… I really like your suggestion to combine it with a black hen feather which helps it look more realistic. Love it ! Regards, Wayne 😀👍

Not only do some people have difficulty procuring the feather because of location, but they may not have the funds either. It's an expensive feather. And to make it worse, I've seen idiots on eBay selling capes with every single eye split, for $150. Just preying on people that don't know any better. So I have no problem with people using this, if they don't have the resources to get the real thing. Tie them up, fish them, have fun. That's my opinion at least. Thanks

You are correct here in the states I have ran across decent ones for $260.00+ so I have had to use these fake ones to get some look to my flies.

Hi Davie, Have you fished with the substitute yet? If so, was there a big difference between the substitute and real JC? What size would you recommend on #6-8 doubles and 8-10cm tubes? I was thinking of XX-small(14mm) and Small(20mm)?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Christoffer, I have fished with it and it looks great, I have also tyed some for friends and they are very happy with it as well..I have to be honest though many prefer the real JC but eventually it will slowly work it's way into many flies.. All the very best Davie..

question is Davie, how durable is this? I must admit, it looks better in the fly with the feathers glued on to it. if the synthetic JC lasts out the time of the fly then we can't complain.. nice fly as always

Hi Leigh, I have to be honest I haven't fished with them yet I have only tyed them on some flies, though I have worked with them a bit and they stood up to a lot of abuse..There's a few countries getting very strict on bringing in Jungle Cock so having a good sub will become very handy.. All the very best Davie..

i got a cape from lathkill tackle sent to me in australia. it was siezed by the quarantine service and i had to pay $70.00 to have it gamma treated. all in all it cost me about $150.. but it was worth it. love the effect of jungle cock.

Hi Robin, It is very hard to beat the real Jungle Cock and as you said it does add a lot to a fly so it makes it very hard not to use a substitute. There is a few countries that are very strict about them coming into their country so having a reasonable sub or method to improve them does help.. All the very best Davie..

Any suggestions on getting into tube tying? I like the idea just too many options to start.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 7 жыл бұрын
Hi khrangrok, I have tyed many tube fly styles and all have a purpose, On the waters I fish I use plastic and copper tubes in sizes from 1/2 inch to 1 1/4 inch as this allows me to fish flies at different depths as well as holding the fly in slow to fast waters..This is how I would start but it depends on the water you fish as well as the rules on some waters in certainly countries as they will not allow weighted flies...I hope this is of some help to you... All the very best Davie

I live in the middle of the United States ( Kansas ). Most of my fishing is on small to medium sized freshwater ponds. Largemouth ( Black Bass ), Crappie, and Catfish are mostly what I see action with; however there is the occasional trip to Trout springs. Most of the fish I catch using a fly rod do well with hooks size 1/0 - 6 and I can go to 20 for Bluegill and Sunfish. I mostly wanted to try this out for bass and pike patterns, but was not sure on what size tubes would be good for those size hooks. Fish seem to bite well in a 2 - 3 foot water column and I would assume I don't need anything heavy. I use unweighted wooly buggers and a few other streamers and they perform extremely well. I am just in love with the salmon fly look ( and you make them look easy to tie which after 45 minutes I found out is not the case LOL ). I know several of our fresh water species here would love the Heineken fly colors and things close to that which resemble our bluegill and sunfish. Was just trying to narrow down suggestions on tube sizes, or brands. Thanks for all the videos you post and responses you send out. I would honestly be lost without all these videos you have provided on here. My wife sighed the other night in bed because I put the CDC channel on "play all" and laid down to get ready for bed hoping I could watch a few and maybe even learn something in my sleep. She thinks I have an addiction. Take Care, Damon

Hi Damon, I hope your good lady forgives me for making you watch my videos though I do appreciate that you enjoy them....The style of this tube fly is ideal for representing a small fish as I do tye saltwater and pike flies in this style and I agree that the Heineken and this one would be a very good colour combination for pike...I have in the past tyed tubes in colour combinations of some of the best Rapalas so I would go down this road as you can't go wrong by doing this...I would say that plastic tubes would be the best to use as they are light and easy to cast especially with a single handed rod... let me know how you get on... All the very best Davie..

I thought I was the only one to put a small feather behind fake Jungle cock. I just tied the small feather in and centered the fake JC eye in front. I wish I had resined them. The young man I gave them to caught plenty of fish on them. I have a small amount of the real thing but I am saving them for framing flies! All the best and God bless. Sean

Hi Sean, My original plan was just to do as you did but I thought this would help hold the jungle cock as well as give it a more natural look..I'm glad you are still doing well and that your flies have been fishing just as good... All the very best Davie...

Have been using the generation 2 version for some time now, and they have made no difference to catches, therefore unless I am tying "show" flies I no longer use real jungle cock on any of the flies I tie for my own personal use.....My only gripe with the generation 2 version was in actually cutting them from the sheet. Whilst the are stamped out and only attached by tip and stem, removing them without damaging the tip is a real pain, and requires very careful removal with the aid of a surgical quality curved scalpel blade. I have searched all over KZbin, Vimeo etc, for examples of folk removing them from the backing sheet, but can't find a single example. Have you encountered any similar problems with the Generation 3 samples?

Could you answer me if you know.. Im looking at "wapsi salmon hen neck" and "wapsi chinese streamer rooster neck" do you know about how long the fibres per average is on those 2 different pieces? Can't find very much information unfortunately :( If im going to tie flies simular to the one you made on the video which of the two necks would you go for? Thanks, regards Sam.

Hi Sam, i'm sorry to say I have never used these capes so I'm not familiar with the fibre length of their hackles though I would think they wouldn't be too far away from the ones I use...I do though like to look through the capes I buy if I can... All the very best Davie
