First class tips, well done. My comments as a tier of 40+ years: • Completely agree with your comments on scissors, and I would say a minimum of three: a general working pair; another set with fine tips for finishing, or for very small flies; and a cheap pair for cutting wire, tinsel, other hard stuff. When the wire scissors blunt, buy another cheap pair. I thoroughly recommend surgical/dental scissors, because they are better quality and much cheaper than fly-tying scissors. It seems that when “fly-tying” is applied to any tool the price goes up 5 to 10 fold. • Tiemco bobbin holders are very good, although I prefer the C&F Design midge series CFT-61, regardless of the size of fly I’m tying. I was given a Tiemco adjustable magnetic bobbin holder. I can’t see any real benefit for the huge expense. Definitely go ceramic. • Keeping everything clean and neat - absolutely. The only material and tools on my desk are those required for the fly/flies being tied. Tools and material are laid out in a surgical manner so I don’t have to go hunting for them. Other material is in storage, and other tools sit in a caddy, home made out of pine for a few bob. • Tried superglue and UV resin, sometimes messy, often expensive for resin and UV torch, and I quickly went back to nail varnish, which is what is most head cement/varnish. • A final tip, sometimes a fly just doesn’t look right, the material is uncooperative, so don’t be afraid to cut it all off and start again. I have a scalpel/craft knife for that purpose. Happy tying, Graham, Tasmania

Brilliant tips Graham, thanks for taking the time to post that. Not being afraid to start over instead of wasting a hook is essential for reducing waste 👍

Sean got dentist scissors recently and they are first class. £5 on ebay many thanks. Jim

Great stuff Jim, a surgeon or dentist deals with a lot more risk than fly tyers...it's no reason their scissors are extra sharp 👌

New fly tyers take heed of this video before the fly tying bug consumes you and you end up spending an absolute fortune on gear. Most of which you don't need. I have amassed enough gear to open a shop. Hopefully I'll live long enough to use up every feather, tinsels etc etc and maybe fortunate enough to beat my PB.... On a Park Shrimp. Thank you again Sean. 🍤😄🎣

Fly tying can be so much more expensive than fly tying 😂 It's always funny when I hear people talking of tying to save money 🤦♂️.....if the wife asks...we do though 🤫

Superglue takes several days to cure, during that time it emits vapors that will coat the inside of a fly box, making the clear cover foggy as well. The vapor will also coat the other flies in you box. So leave your flies in a short, open container for a couple of days.

Thanks Frank 👍 haven't experienced this thankfully with loctite but my flies always sit around the desk for weeks usually anyway 😂

@@SeánWoodsFishing The best example would be the CSI tv shows where the lab tech places evidence in a box with a drop of superglue. 24 hours later everything is coated with a thin film exposing fingerprints. Although its a TV show, there is truth behind it.

People should look into a club to see if they do fly tying nights it helps new comers on no end and people always have extra materials the share so you don't need to buy to much

Absolutely, great tip Neil. Videos are good but there's no substitute to tying side by side with an experience tyer when starting out 👍

Another one is buy a good quality bobbin with a ceramic nozzle! The Temco one is brilliant, about £18 and will last a lifetime! As bobbins go they have more expensive ones that aren’t as good! 🧵 🎣

100% or it can create frustration for any newcomer. I think the Temco ones even come with a lifetime guarantee?
@WeeManSham Жыл бұрын
@@SeánWoodsFishing I don’t know about the guarantee but the way the thread flows off the bobbin and it doesn’t grind on the thread. Well worth the money! Wish I had of got myself one years ago! I use the black nozzle one. 🧵👌🏻

@@WeeManSham just checked Sham, it's the griffin one that has the lifetime guarantee. It was a similar price so that's where the confusion was 🤦♂️

@@SeánWoodsFishing I’ve just had a look myself and Temco have a new double leg adjustable one out £43 WTF! Temco must of looked at the market and thought they’d bring out a really expensive one just to keep up with prices! Crazy money! 🧵🎣
