Great point! His earlier works were sort of a ragebait, but he already had a concept. He just outgrew it to become a ‘real’ artist. He did everything by himself and that is very commendable, he started to take music seriously and showed real talent.

The "Big 3" is something we've been calling Drake, Kendrick, J. Cole since the 2010s. It is based on their success back then, not now. The Big 3 really shaped that era. Their accomplishments could never be erased. It is a historical name at this point, similar to how you would call Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray, Tommy Hearns, and Roberto Duran the "4 Kings of Boxing" It is a historical title, not a current status. They are referred to that today even though they have since all been defeated multiple times, lost belts, retired etc. If Kendrick, Cole, and Drake all fell off tomorrow, they would still be known as the "Big 3" To take that away from any of them would be revisionist history. I love Tyler. He is my favorite rapper out right now. I loved him since Bastard, but we have to come up with a new name for him or anyone else that pops off in this new decade.

"Drake hasnt been important for the culture in a decade", are you going to forget when he had 2018 on lock. He's birthed so many careers with his features, most notably Lil Baby in recent times. Kendrick was irrelevant since 2017, it was the Drake beef that sparked life back into his career so bare this in mind when youre talking about whos important for the culture. Kendricks diss tracks got bigger numbers and were more talked about than the entire Mr Morale album. We all know who he has to thank for that.

My answer to the question at 21:30 mark about how does Tyler, the Creator stick out for large audience, is summed up by Anthony quite a bit when explaining the question. Tyler's appeal is the idea that Tyler does not fit a mold and in today's internet culture is surrounded by trends and culture vultures. People who drive their own innovations is admired by passionate listeners, and that's why him and Kendrick are so beloved for the culture. Unlike Drake who rides the waves of trends and just looks bland overall which has shown in his past few albums. The levels of experimental music and risk taking they are willing to take at their peaks in popularity is what makes them shine.

One thing tangential to the ian thing is how tyler has been expressing how much he cares about hip-hop and the art behind it. It almost feels that the archetype of the ideal rapper these days is the guy who shows up to a studio inebriated and says whatever comes to mind and its fire. Everyone seems to want to have their lil wayne moment, so its nice to see the opposite, someone willing to be like "i care about this shit, this shit is hard and its important

The fact that Tyler's pen got sharper reflects this. He went out of his way to make it clear he wanted to make a "RAP" album with CMIYGL and not be pigeonholed into the artsy goofball lane. The kid who made Goblin got a Gangsta Grillz project about vacationing and it rocked

I feel this fr. God I remember what it felt like when Yonkers dropped. It felt like such a breath of fresh air, or rather maybe a big cloud of cigarette smoke after too much manufactured recycled hospital air or smth bc it was so gritty and jarring and DIFFERENT. It slapped the game awake and was such a fucking moment and I'm so glad I got to live through that firsthand. He's done nothing but grow exponentially since, with each successive album drop. He doesn't just adapt the way Drake does; he innovates. I'm a shameless glazer for Tyler til death tho

Even in 2011 I instantly recognized Tyler as a smart, talented, art student ass kid. He was rapping about being on honor roll. The rape and stuff was just shock factor, as any art student ass kid is want to try out. Some of y’all never knew art student ass kids in school and it shows. Kendrick even mentioned him alongside Drake and J. Cole in the “Control” verse. I’m just surprised it’s taken people till now to start recognizing Tyler’s importance and individuality. He’s been that guy since day 1. As for J. Cole, I swear the song about losing his virginity and “Get Off My Dick” are the only 2 songs I’ve really remember from him. Tyler’s got AMAZING presence on the mic, a unique voice, different tonalities, theatricality, etc. J. Cole just has normal ass rapper voice. But having an iconic voice like Tyler's is just a natural born gift. Talent and hard work can’t even give you that. Tyler is that dude, and even beats Kendrick in several areas of artistic comparison. End rant.
@ermesk14 күн бұрын
So does Tupac and Jay z. They have the normal rap voice but no one questions it. Tyler is more artistic than cole it happens, and so is kendrick, kanye, andre 3000. Cole's problem is that he is not very expressly artistic and bold ( with the arrogance)

I think as an artist, it just makes me happy to listen to music that feels so authentic. I think the personality of his music changes with time because it's HIS personality. Whether that expresses itself as a character like Igor, or series of stories like Chromakopia, or just themed abstract songs like Flower Boy, it never feels like he's doing anything for the sake of mass appeal. It can almost make me frustrated as an artist to hear someone so consistently capable of putting themselves into their art with such creativity and consistency.

The thing is, drake isn't in the big 3 based on his talents, he's there based on his mass appeal and sustained popularity. Ideally the big 3 has something from everyone, and at the moment (to me) it's: Drake- Dominates charts and mainstream music spheres Kendrick- The goat of concious hip hop, lyricism and story telling. Truly a once in a lifetime artist. Tyler- The whole package. amazing producer, creative director, designer, personality, and a pretty decent rapper/story teller to boot. Not to mention LGBT representation in hip hop is pretty huge and not something we see from many people in the industry.

@@hugo-ig7kl I dont think you have heard drakes music if you just think he is a hitmaker and nothing else. Drake is the most versatile out of tyler and kendrick (artist wise), he is also the only one of them who can sing, and I'd even argue bar for bar drake is historically better than both of them too when it comes to punchlines and slick raps (Kendrick is more of a storyteller than a bar for bar artist, and drake was also lil wayne's protege so it's not surprising). People who claim drake is only big 3 because of popularity have not heard his music and in that same lane J cole wouldn't even be near the big 3 because he is not bigger than someone like kanye west even in the 2010's sales wise.

I think instead of people talking about The Big Three, it should be seen more like ‘who is the figurehead for each section of hip-hop?’ No set number, but the most talented, influential and charismatic person within that sub-genre. That would allow all Kendrick, Drake, Tyler, Cole to all have a place at the top, being the leaders of that sound or type of music. Plus you could throw in people like Future or Travis for those types of rap styles and newer sounds. I think that just makes more sense, so ppl stop comparing people whose music differ alot, but still having that competitive drive for each artist to remain alongside the rest
