I'm surprised Hikaru was so adamant about people hitting walls and never getting past the wall. Sure, lots of people do do that, but it's not impossible. A famous example is Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile and then all of a sudden 'lots' of people were breaking 4 mins. Tyler had the benefit of already being incredibly good at at least one other thing that required fast tactical thinking with longer term strategy, so that whole mental aspect of the wall was mitigated and he already had some aspects of chess well developed before he even played the game.

He is stating a simple fact that is present across everything that requires practice. Everyone reaches a plateau or wall at some point. It isn't that they are unable to break through, it is they are unable to maintain the level of commitment needed to break through. When you practice, you are rewarded with an increased ability to do whatever you are practicing. It may be a very small amount, but it does become noticeable as you continue. That wall or plateau is when you are no longer improving no matter how much you practice. There are no gains for the effort invested. That can last for years and is extremely discouraging. Not many people have the desire and drive to continue putting in a lot of hours when there is no improvement. Our time is limited and valuable, so people will switch to something else that has caught their interest or devote less time to practice and more time to things they find enjoyable.
@ACSMEX
@ACSMEX 6 ай бұрын
The wall is real. Tyler is talented, but each ELO point he gains is one ELO point closer to levels where EVERYONE is talented, but also studying chess and not only playing it. Playing and tactics can only take you so far. A tactic requires a mistake, which will be less and less common the higher he climbs. Still, the fact he can get that high is proof of how dedicated he is. I wish him well and hope that he gets a tutor if he really wants to keep grinding that ELO.

I mean, obviously. If you play league or even watch it at fairly high level, you learn that the strategic side of the game has a MASSIVE impact on wins, not just mechanics. Tyler is a great example of this, as it’s been pretty clear he is not the most mechanical player, but his knowledge on things like macro, micro, gold earned, wave control, match ups and so on is what got him that 5 role challenger. He actually LEARNED HOW and WHY things work in the game. But his streamer personality and his energetic side conflict with it so much that people might get the wrong idea and think he is just mindlessly brawling through matches. Put all that type of gameplay on a game as limited as chess and you have all the good sides without him “running it down for kills”. Super interesting tbh

the problem with people playing since qge of 3 is that they learn and memorize games, so they dance under pre-set moves. Hence why many don't reach 5% or even 10%. Tyler has his own strategy: "what can my opponent do and how can I stop it?" based on what he has learned. Adapting to the situation that each match offers. Something that only the top % of anything truly achieve. Not saying that learning by-the-book will never get you there, but instead, that adapting will give you an upper hand in achieving it.

I mean good for him, but isn’t it like usually much harder once you’re top 1% in something? Be it League or even a martial art. Very impressive, but there is definitely a wall to anything and one you simply can’t overcome with pure training. Levi is still trying to become a GM, but questions if he even can do it with enough training. Edit. Nvm 2000 in Rapid is certainly possible for everyone with enough training and he is just exceptionally fast additionally. Would love to see him do the same in faster formats out of interest how good his pattern recognition actually is, although rapid definitely is better for learning.

I think a lot of people don't get that, how much of mastery and improvement is really a psychological phenomenon. When you master your own mind, you really unlock so much potential. I learnt this myself when I made more improvements over the last year in language learning and piano than I have in the last 10 years. Most of us are not aware, but we harbour a lot of psychological inhibitions that prevent us from unlocking our full state of concentration. Whether it be insecurities, fear of embarassment, or other such things, we "limit" ourselves in order to prevent ourselves from the pain of loss or being inadequate. What Tyler has mastered is the art of COCENTRATION, and focusing on his desire to improve and be better. He doesn't worry about looking stupid, he doesn't fear failure the same way. He just keeps playing and stays FOCUSED on whatever it is he's doing because his only desire is to reach the next goal. He's learned how to block out all the noise distractions and insecurities. I don't think he's necessarily "built different" in that he possess a special gift others don't have, but he has achieved mastery over his own mind through perseverence and desire.

This is gold, “we limit ourselves to prevent ourselves from the pain of loss or being inadequate.” The fear of not achieving your set goal and the feeling of disappointment as a result of coming short of that goal is enough to deter people from setting new goals and actually trying their best.

Dude plays chess for 10-14 hrs a day its not that he has unlocked his mind like a monk but he is just living and breathing chess, the same way you and I would learn chinese if you got randomly airdropped in china without a choice you adapt and overcome tyler just chooses to overcome and pours tens of hours into it unlike us pouring 10s of hours into watching yt content and commenting bs
@samnsamole9448
@samnsamole9448 7 ай бұрын
@@dzmanhooo8602 I'm not just talking about chess, but everything he's done. I used to watch Tyler back when he first started and came up as a variety streamer, I've never watched him play league. Tyler 1 has an obsessive mindset that extends beyond just 1 accomplishment, and I noticed it fairly early on. CS Major (LUL), bodybuilding, football player, runescape addict, then league addict. Then he grinded out being a variety streamer providing some of the best content during that time, and he would even endure getting trolled and griefed in pubg and dayz or whatever back in the day. Then of course, he went on to become an obsessive league player and get challenger in all 5 roles, etc. It's unfathomable how he's able to sink so much time into things. I don't know if he's an addict or just has superhuman willpower, probably a bit of both. Now you can say yeah he got lucky because his ban gave him notoriety, but if he didn't have the personality to carry his variety streamers he would have faded out if was just your average toxic nerd league streamer. The culmination of all his traits in combination with his ethic I think played into him getting his lucky break.

Anyone that says it’s “brute force” is coping cuz he is smarter than them. There’s people that play chess their whole lifetime and can’t reach 1800. You can’t just “brute force” intellectual problems. If that was the case humanity would be able to “brute force” everything. That’s like saying a you can brute force crack a 20 character AES 256 bit encryption with an intel pentium chip from the 90s. Brute forcing that would take thousands of years unless you find a more intelligent way.

@@waterflowzz yeah duhh i know what brute forcing is but you're just being obtuse by saying "uhm actually thats technically not brute forcing 🤓" what people mean when they say T1 is bruteforcing is that instead of studying theory he just keeps playing more games and improving through trial and error (which is what brute force is)

You can cope as much as you want and pretend like what I'm about to say is not true, but Tyler1 is simply a very high IQ individual that is simultaniously extremely low in neuroticism, which means that he has very high levels of never ending ambition pumping through him for no reason. It's simply how he was born, his brain is not normal. This things have been obvious forever if you are even remotely familiar with how dominant of world class player he trully has been in league of legends as well. Some people are just born with Golden Brains, and a Golden Brain will not necessarily manifest in wanting to be a mathemathician of phisychist. Sometimes that Golden Brain will simply strive to be the absolute best at some random game, just because.
