We never could’ve imagined that this week would go the way that it did…just wanted to say a quick thanks for listening and allowing us to explain where our heads are at. We'll figure it out, we always do...just might be a bit of ups and downs along the day but what else is new lol. Really does mean so much to us that we have this sounding board and community. Love you all and thanks again for listening❤

My Dynamic Duo, My Favorite Boys. I am so sorry to hear that Charlie isn't feeling well. But in true Favorite Boys fashion, you found a Vet that would get Charlie in right away, and agree to give him the care he needs to get better. Whatever the two of you decide to do, I will support you and remain a faithful fan. You will get your house done, life just throws in curveball. But, the one thing I have learned about the two of you, you can both overcome anything. Until Wednesday. Sending Love and Hugs to Tyler and Todd and their Lil Family 💙💙🐶🐶🐱

We live in our dome full time in Nove Scotia too (north of Truro)! We got our's spray foamed with 3 to 4 inches and it's UNBELIEVABLY warm in here! It's been getting down to -2 at night and it's +23 in here without the stove going full tilt! We've been meaning to invite you guys over since we're probably only around an hour from each other. You guys helped inspire us to do this! We sold our home and were looking for ways to move off grid and we found your videoes and went for it! Last winter we had an "arctic insulation" cover (basically R3 insulation) and each morning it was below 0 in here. NOW we have it spray foamed directly onto the dome walls and we get too warm in here! You can get a kit at Home Depot (it's class 1 rated so I think it passes permitting if that was a concern). We went with a company here but the kit from HD would also work (I worked it out and it's around the same price for either). Cheers guys, we've been meaning to invite you over for dinner. I'd love to send you some photos of our dome!

No WAY!!! Okay, so this is exactly what we wanted to do from the very beginning but we were pushed away from doing it because it would make taking the exterior cover off impossible because the foam would be stuck to it. We have TWO layers of insulation plus the arctic liner and in January, February and March it's just rotten. The days when we're awake it can get no joke, 30 degrees but the second we stop feeding the fire and it dies down the cold creeps in instantly. Do you have any concerns of how you'll salvage the insulation for when you replace the exterior cover? Also, yes def e-mai us hello@tylerandtodd.com we'd love to connect!!

My lab at 8 had her first CCL surgery. We would carry her down the stairs with a towel wrapped under her to support her back weight. 2 years later she had to have the other leg operated on. She lived til she was 17. Charlie's stubborn like her and wants to be around to see the land completed. Big hugs guys! ❤

Sending prayers for Charley's successful surgery & recovery. We had a recent scare with our cat Lily, who was fine one minute & limping the next. Vet, whose office is 10 minutes away, was able to see her the same day. Tests revealed tendonitis of the knee of her right back leg. She's on meds now & doing great. I expect to hear that Charley's doing great soon too.❤

Dogs are amazing creatures and astoundingly adaptable. You will be surprised at how well he does and how quickly he adjusts to the new routine. I’m glad you found a vet in whom you are comfortable to do the surgery. We live in a somewhat remote part of Arizona and have limited access to veterinarians. We too must travel over 100 miles for emergency vet care. That is frightening to us as it is to you. We agree with you about vets versus people doctors. When faced with a crisis I would much prefer a vet, they are far better diagnosticians. Let’s face it, their patients don’t say much and worse, their natural defense is to hide their limitations. Of course, whether you leave for the winter is your decision, it is however, sometimes a real benefit to take a break and recharge yourselves. You may find you’ll return with renewed enthusiasm and perhaps even new and exciting ideas for your future. Whatever you do, love each other and your pets. You are all a family.

When we bought our first house we chose a single story with no large steps. Our 16 year old Lhasa Apso doesn’t have to worry about falling down stairs. They bring us so much love and joy, we feel lucky that we can give them a home that is safe and lets them enjoy a longer, happier life. We will never remember the dollars, but we will forever cherish the moments with our 🐶s.

Absolutely-taking a break from the land sounds like a break you need love, love, love your pool 👏👏👏👏👏👏- I don’t have any experience with pools but have seen too many videos of wildlife trapped in swimming pools with water, if you guys aren’t there, and if the dogs aren’t marking their territory on a regular basis, I imagine more wildlife will be visiting your property, so please consider covering your pool with something substantial You don’t want to be cleaning a deer carcass out of there in spring

Hi guys! I am so sorry that dear Charlie is having a rough go of it right now. He will do great with the surgery and recover beautifully...I am sure of it! But you know what? I think a bit of pampering over this winter might be just what all of you need! Find a fabulous vacation style rental for a couple of winter months - a beautiful place that is warm and cozy; one you all will love and that will be easy and comfy for the dogs. A change of scenery and a brief break from the ongoing issues there would give you both *exactly* what you need. This is what the dark months are for. In winter we should be focused on feeding our bodies well, resting, recouping, recharging, and readying ourselves for the next season. You both need that - and now Charlie really does too. And I sure hope you wouldn't be worried about us! Naturally, you will take us with you! We would *love* to go on "away" time with you! That would be so fun! 💜🧡

My dog had that surgery on both knees when she was 20 months old. She was (still is at 10 yrs old) a play monster so I slept on a mattress on the floor with her for 4 months so she wouldn’t jump after the surgery. She had a full recovery & is such an athlete & has never had any issues with her knees since.

Love this idea - however, as it turns out people think you're unhinged when you tell them you're moving in with two dogs and a cat. The rental market here is in a really bad way and there's virtually nothing available. If there is something available, out of the 20 people who will apply they'll choose the ones without pets unfortunately!

Make him a little ramp out of the dome so when he is even healing he won't have to do the stairs. It will help alot with his other old legs while he's on the mend. We did that when our senior golden had surgery it was easier on us using the leg sling and easier for our dog

We've had two smaller dogs with CCL damage who had the less involved repair surgery, and both of them did beautifully. (Anatomically, smaller dogs are plagued by fragile knee joints.) They were both considered seniors when they had the procedures. We just stopped every optional thing and tended to them through their surgery and recuperation, and it was absolutely the right choice; one of our knuckleheads managed to undo her stitches the day after surgery, and the other one tried mightily, so it was a good thing we were both there to keep an eye on them. As cool as the projects are, and as much vicarious enjoyment we get out of your triumphs, you wouldn't be the folks we love if you didn't make your animals the priority. We'll happily watch you walk Charlie onto an astroturfed patio in Arizona for two months if that's what it takes for our guy to get back to four on the floor. Good luck to all, and we'll all be pulling for Charlie's recuperation!

it makes sense. I’m 80 years old now, and I realize that I wouldn’t change a thing knowing where I am now. Not Everything happened the way I wanted it to. but that is life. I think you’re in that stage right now where you’ve come a long way and you still got a ways to go and you’re wondering when it’s going to be all finished without any more problems. You have each other which is a wonderful thing. just remember, all work, and no play is never a good thing. be good to yourselves, and treat yourselves. that breath of fresh air counts for so much when you feel overloaded. 😘❤️🥰

That’s one thing I’ve noticed in your vlogs. Your both are doing a great job walking in the others shoes so to speak. Your doing what’s best for Charlie and I pray he will get through the surgery and recover quickly. He has the best daddies. In April my 6yo cocker spaniel broke her left front elbow. I was stunned when she was called a senior dog. I opted for surgery to fix it. There were rods and screws and she was confined to a 3’x3’ pen while she recovered. I carried her whenever she was not in the pen. After6 weeks X-rays showed the rods holding her bone were not holding and there was not enough unaffected bone to repeat the surgery. I could not put my 6yo dog down and I opted for amputation. It was a tough decision and it meant more weeks of recovery. But she is next to me right now and for the most part is as active as before, just a little slower. Do I regret the 15k USD I could I’ll afford? Not in the least. We each must care for out fur families in the best way we know how.

There is nothing better the a good word vomit sesh to clear out the pipes. Get rid of that heavy energy to that clogs even the simplest things of our lives, and make room for the stuff we need. You two are doing absolutely amazing. It’s just like everything in our lives, we do the best we can with what we have. Sweet Charlie of course is priority and it’s ok to take a step or two back, to move forward. If we don’t do it, we miss things that we are supposed to see, feel, learn, and experience. If we don’t life finds away to do it for us. I know finishing the house is super important, but forever home is not the destination as it is the journey. Set backs are upsetting, especially in the moment, but each and everyone of them give a priceless gift after gone through it. From personal growth, relationship growth, to an amazing bottle of wine with some good food and family snuggles.

Our dog Dudley had the same surgery. We had to use the lift strap for 6 weeks. We had to curtail his nighttime movements for his safety & our peace of mind. We put our mattress on the living room floor & we slept with him the whole time. It became one of our fondest memories with Dudley. After healing he was fully back to normal, running & playing, as if nothing had happened. We could always feel the bolts & he could too. He would mess with it a bit at first and did eventually chew a "hot spot" below it. That's something to keep in mind. I hope this little bit of advice & experience helps to ease your minds. We are sending you & all your fur babies much love & healing energies! ❤

I HIGHLY recommend doggy physical therapy! My Pointer was constantly injuring himself. (He was a running wildman) At one point the vet was suggesting amputating a back leg to relieve pain! I was horrified! Then they were actually saying the “E” word! (Euthanasia) I was so stressed. A friend suggested a physical therapist with an underwater treadmill. It saved his life! I can’t tell you what a transformation that happened. People were amazed on our walks. Total strangers would stop and say they never thought this dog would survive. I hope Charlie recovers to a healthy, happy old guy. I know how attached we get and it’s so hard to see them in pain. ❤️💕❤️

I never tire of watching an animal so cared for and loved. Our dog had to have three surgeries in December upstate NY, after a car hit her and left her on the side of the road. She was a new rescue when she got off her leash and ran off. Our life became trying to trap her first, which she took the bait and somehow did not set the trap door off. We put signs then all over. We could tell she was near but her fear was so great, as she came from an ASPCA rescue of many dogs that were ill treated, so she just could not get to the door. Thank God for ppl like you guys and animal lovers as her surgeries were more than $14000 and many donated to help our Tish who had a horrible first five years of life, so I get your planning. They always come first, in our life. We too carried her and helped her out for bathroom breaks as well. I cried seeing and feeling the love you have for your fur babies. I've watched your latest video (We Need To Talk) twice already. My wife has not seen it yet, but I am going to sit her down tonight. We've been watching your Channel for a long time. You are our very favorite KZbin couple. Your latest video left me blubbering, and teary-eyed. You are both so intrepid. This problem with Charlie will get better. We have two Yorkies, and they are our whole life. Both our babies are getting on in years, and we're two people who don't deal with illness or loss, whether they be people or puppies and kitties. The "container house" was a big step for you, and we admire you for your ability to rise above the challenges. We are married almost fifty years, and we have been doing "fix and flip" homes ever since our son was three years old. We always buy homes we feel sorry for, and we make them new. The last three homes were the only ones we actually let other builders do most of the work. At 72 years of age, we've been slowing down. It's not as easy holding a paintbrush, while keeping the ladder from taking us on a joy ride to the floor. Stick with your project. You've GOT THIS ! Our hope is one day to meet-up with you, and share life experiences, a nice cup of tea, or bottle of wine. We know you're hooked on the house thing. We can tell.

So sorry that Charlie hurt himself. It is just so hard when our baby dogs have something so life changing happen. Especially when they are older. Our old fella, Zinsser, is now over 14. He tore his ACL a year ago right now. We are in Minnesota and the winter was right around the corner. We couldn't get in with a surgeon until a month later (Covid delays). He is only 20 pounds and it felt daunting to know we would be in for such a long recovery time. He couldn't go on ice in case he splayed his legs. But, we do what we have to. We were joined at the hip for a long time. It sounds like Charlie will be well taken care of by a great medical team. So glad to hear that you are thinking about what you need to stay comfortable and give yourselves a break in the days ahead. I've been watching you for a long time. Really look forward to my Sunday update and now the podcast too. Hang in there. Charlie couldn't have a more wonderful family. He sure is loved. ❣

Did the surgery on my 8 year old lab and she lived 4 1/2 years after that - absolutely thriving. We chose to do the extracapalar surgery instead of TPLO - just b/c of her smaller size and age. I also did TPLO on my 4 year old mix retriever in 2021. Both had absolutely amazing outcomes. Please understand that both knees often ending up going - and often within the year. I used a reusable grocery bag to life them both up - just cut it up and it was so easy. I also had a great design given to me for a surgery leg cover - for post op protection and therefore NOT using a cone. When the more recent (younger) dog came up lame about 1 year post op, I immediately had acupuncture done on her leg and continue to provide major joint supplementation - we have been totally good since then - with hiking more than 5kms each day. I put up some “walls” to keep Chessie in a contained areas - she was up and walking within a few days and then limited controlled walks for 4 weeks after - with constant home stretching, water therapy and acupuncture Recommend all of the above. Both dogs had it done in Ontario winter (one in November and one at the end of Jan). Not a single regret. You got this - feel free to reach out with questions - I also work in the Vet world 🥰

Wow, how very stressful! I am a retired therapist in BC, who has watched you two traverse many challenging times, but your present situation seems weighter than others. So I thought I would wade in. It sounds like you have two main issues right now, Charlie's surgery and what to do this coming winter. It seems Charlie is in really good hands, as you had a reassuring experience with the veterinary surgeon. As well, others on this feed have positive things to say about the veterinarian hospital itself. As an aside, years ago, we had an excellent vet who did the same surgery on our 12 year old standard poodle. She came through it with flying colours and went on to live a happy, active life until age 16. As for what to do this winter, it sounds like you two are strongly leaning into doing something different this winter, and given Charlie's situations, it sounds like something that would nuture your family. You mentioned how the snow and rough terrain might be too challenging for Charlie. Maybe it's time for a break and a change of scenery? Or rather a change of terrain? As a suggestion, what if you watched the last part of your video and really leaned into what you were saying there? Best wishes

Struggling with my own "behind the eight ball" feelings, I recently went to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA, USA. Though not really into sports, I thoroughly enjoyed the informative displays with my younger brother, a basketball fan. The gift shop had a magnetic sign: DON'T QUIT, with the the N'T and the QU printed in black letters and crossed out with a red line, leaving the white letters: DO IT standing out proud. Bought that sucker for my fridge. I need to see that daily!

"I have the tendency to spiral!" As I listen to you as you describe this, I realize that I tend in some situations (usually involving how to cope with computer stuff) to do something similar, and so I appreciate your very descriptive phrase. I think of it as being in a whirlwind of negative feelings, but your description makes more sense. Eventually, my "logical brain" kicks in and I can work my way out of that negative spiral, but it can be intense when I am in the middle of it. You are not alone!

I’m in the middle of a build that’s hitting 3 years next month, and I feel you on how hard the mental limbo and the lack of control is. We aren’t as isolated as you, but we are in a house that desperately needed a renovation when we started and now is rapidly deteriorating and it’s stressful when you’ve put all your time, energy and resources into planning a house that suits your needs and you can’t get it to go. I hope that you find somewhere great to hang out when needed whilst you navigate the rest of the build.

Good thoughts and healing vibes for Charlie. Our Lola had her first ACL repair at five and the second at ten. She bounced back very quickly both time so hoping Charlie does likewise. In regards to your build...find someone to do it for you. It may cost you some serious money but it will save your sanity. I know of what I speak having gone through a three year renovation that included lockdown.

Hey guys! Just checked in, having seen you in awhile. Hope all is ok. I agree with others that you need to take this winter season off. Find a nice rental not to far away so you can still check on the place. Especially with Charlie’s upcoming surgery and recovery and dealing with that you will need time to just breathe and only have to focus on yourselves and the babies. It’s ok to take a time out! Hugs and kisses!😘😘🐶🐶🐱

I think the question you can ask yourselves is “If Charlie wasn’t compromised would you still feel overwhelmed or is this new worry just too much to deal with because of frustration overload?” Your accomplishments have been huge and compared to the average homeowner your skills are extraordinary. So you both get A++ on your build. I think when you reflect on all the progress you have made these recent setbacks will be manageable. Positive thoughts for Charlie’s recovery and for the completion of the siding project.

…by installing the bottom J Channel (while it may look nicely framed) you are creating a “water trough” that will retain water and begin to rot out the sheathing behind the 3M wrap and any wood siding you insert into the bottom J. Use a “starter strip” at the bottom and forego the “4 sided picture frame” look.

My 13yo Rat Terrier (Torrey) blew her CCL a couple yrs ago. After vet consultation and lots of research I chose not to do the surgery . . as the healing time is the same with or without and is an option available particularly for smaller dogs. I had to lift her up and down the stairs and the furniture off the porch and back on. Fortunately I'm retired and available 24/7. I also started her on daily glucosamine/condroitin and CBD oil. The one thing I didn't realize though, was that as she was using her healing leg a little more and more she was also over-using the other leg . . . and . . . like clockwork - as soon as she was just about back to normal . . . due to overuse - - the other one blew. I believe it healed better and quicker due to the daily supplements. Anyway . . to make a long story just a little bit longer. She is now back to better-than-ever. I really didn't expect that. I thought she'd always have trouble. Nope! That strap looks very useful . . . and really necessary due to Charlie's size. Good Luck . . . and hang in there. ps . . . I'm loving 'Tangents w/ T & T'

Poor sweet Charlie😢 Our Catahoula Leopard dog had hip dysplasia at 10 years old. There was no choice in our minds but to have the $6k hip replacement surgery done on her. She did very well with the surgery and recovery even at that age. She lived a happy, healthy 16 years. Tyler, I get the spiraling, overthinking, worst case scenario stuff in certain situations too even though I am not normally a negative person. It just kind of takes over sometimes without warning. I've heard the two of you and others talk so often about Better Help. Maybe, at 62 it's time I try them out.😊 ❤️🐾🐱🐾❤️

I’m a 70 year old lesbian single women who has built a home by myself as well. I so understood your building troubles. I’ve built a home with out a builder for various reasons. I’m now in the fully functional home while the final occupancy is not signed yet. I also know the numerous inspection issues, like “there is a screw missing in a panel or your toilet is not silicon sealed “… It’s taken a long time and I did go away and spend last winter with friends elsewhere which was great. But starting this winter in a completed home- I built, despite all the na-sayers and how beautiful it turned out. I’m warm cozy and proud. So worth it but if you need a break take it. It will still be there next spring.

I’m sure you’ve already had the surgery, but if not, bed rest for Charlie is also an option. My dog tore her CCL and had TPLO surgery. 2 years later she tore the other one and we decided to try strict bed rest for a couple months and it allowed the scar tissue to build up and heal. She plays hard on it and 4 years later, she’s still doing fine. They need strict bed rest after surgery anyway, so skipping the surgery and just trying bed rest might be worth a shot. Whatever you do, I hope Charlie has a smooth recovery 💛

Boy, do we know the feeling of “overwhelmed-defeated-willthisshitneverend” of building your own place in the boonies. We bought land in the middle of the forest in Wyoming (nearest town 45 miles, nearest building materials store 85 miles), and it’s all complicated by a steep, 4 mile long, 4wheel drive, rutted mud hole for a “driveway”. Concrete and building material deliveries had to be planned around perfectly dry weather and subject to $300-500 delivery charges PER TRUCK (once we even found people willing to deliver). It took us 6 years, and we started when I was 61 and my husband was 66. And then we had to do most of it ourselves because contractors said, “you guys are crazy, you can’t build out here”. We did it, though, so it does end. And it’s been great (in a sentimental way) watching you guys go thru the exact same crap we did, unexpected setbacks and all. We’re not off grid, though, so at least we had power and a well we could count on. Your house is going to be beautiful, the drawings look amazing! Hang in there, sometimes you just need to vent and consume large amounts of vino!

I am a vet student (pursuing a specialty that won’t have me in a companion animal clinic) and Canada is in CRISIS mode for veterinarians right now. There is a huge shortage of properly educated and trained animal health workers. Your family is so Blessed to have gotten him into an ortho specialist. Regardless of his age he should be able to make it through the surgery very well. If your specialists are giving you the option of removing the plate once the bone has healed, I know the ortho vets out here in Alberta say there is less problems in geriatric dogs once the plate is removed. Again my specialty is not ortho but I have read more success case study’s for the TPLO surgery then failures in older dogs. Good luck to your family through this journey. Your fur animals are so lucky to have you as their parents!! You guys would be amazing parents to human kiddos too! Any child would be Blessed to have you raising them! ❤

My dog is 17. We adopted him when he was 10 so I really understand how much love you can get from an older dog and have for an older dog. That said, you may have to really have a difficult talk about how much intervention and difficult procedures you are willing to put a dog through. I am not here to second guess your choices, just to say every responsible pet owner needs to have that difficult conversation.
