The decision to start the Geodesic Dome project over was honestly not as easy as you'd think. For the last few months we'd really been going back and forth whether all of this work would be worth it but the heat wave was the final straw and the kick in the butt we needed to get to work on making our home more comfortable. In true Tyler and Todd fashion, it couldn't have just been a straight forward project and of course we've created a few more problems for ourselves along the way lol. We're crossing our fingers that the new insulation will arrive this week and we can solve this issue once and for all...P.S we've been busy on redoing the entire interior of the dome from the kitchen to the electrical and cannot wait to show you what we've come up with next Sunday!

The Dome people are going to want you to start teaching classes on how to construct one of these things without giving up and not getting divorced! Ray and I built a beautiful log house which, of course, was way more than we anticipated! We ( Ray, myself, and two baby daughters) had turned an old school bus into our home . We lived there for 1 1/2 years. During the winter the temps would drop to way below 0 Fahrenheit. We kept a barrel burning to keep our hands warm. I can’t tell you how many times I would either throw my hammer down and quit, or that I was told that I was fired! We have were building this 4000 sq ft “cabin” in the boonies, along the Platt River, 18 miles outside of Casper Wyoming. I said all that, to say this, neither of us had anywhere to run to, so we would make up after “words” were said, and go back to work 😁! So YES, you should do online classes about building your relationships while living off grid ! Really excited about new endeavors! I’ve said it so many times; your amazing videos on Sunday is our favorite part of the week ! Always peace, love, and all things lovely coming your way🤗😘

You guys are so well-prepared and well-researched in everything you do that you probably already know this, but just in case... The direction of the fan matters and needs to change from season to season so that you maximize cooling or heating for the respective season. As a 40 year resident of South Florida who lives in a home with 20 foot ceilings, I can tell you that fan direction matters. During the summer, set your ceiling fan to rotate in a counterclockwise direction. The airflow directly underneath the ceiling fan should push down, creating a wind-chill effect, which is going to make you feel cooler. But, in winter, reverse to a clockwise direction, to create a gentle updraft and recirculate heat down.

I always envisioned the dome having a couple of overhanging fans to push air up or down during winters with heat from the stove, but stand alone bases that extend from floor to overhead following the curvature of the dome to about 12ft. mark hiding any electrics in the curvature base, like taking C and cutting in half down the middle. The entry door could have a screen door with glass that can be raised up or down, along with the fans to push out unwanted heat from inside during the summer. We are all learning as we go on the dome. See you next week guys, Squirrel is going to insist a window with a bird feeder, it is in your future.

As someone who spent most of my life in the sun belt, not Canada, you have a very simple solution. You need to figure out a way to make an opening near the top of the dome, that you can even install a small exhaust fan in to pull heat out in the summertime. If I were doing it, I would fit some sort of a hood, so that the opening up there would not let in water, and then you could have a fan pulling the hot air out in the summertime, close it off in the winter and use your ceiling fan to re-circulate the warm air inside during the winter. Also, the usual use for a ceiling fan is that it blows down in the summer to cool, and in the winter it reverses and pulls up so that the heat going up hits the ceiling and then goes down the walls to warm them since they are usually the coldest part of any house. You guys have no experience with the removal of heat in a living space, my father brought home our first air conditioner in 1955 in Florida. The other option you could do if you do not want or cannot compromise the skin of the dome, is run a duct up the wall inside, from the bottom of the dome, up near the skylight. Put a fan on it so that it pulls the hot air out of there pulls it down through the ductwork and exhausts it outside, Possibly going through the floor and out to the edge of the deck. That to me seems like the simplest way to pull the heat out of the dome from the top and get it outside without having to compromise the skin or structure of the dome.

You can slice that one huge log into a diving board for your swimming pool. I have watched professional tree trimmers and they are all amazingly methodical and well trained. They can saw down a huge tree without harming anything. Amazing. What did that one guy look like under the hat. Looked hot. You could have invited him over when you get the pool finished!? Happy to see you guys!

When my son was 10 he would pitch our dome tent in our back yard, take a small table, tv, Nintendo, ànd cooler and ran the electric from the garage. He and his friends had a blast.

I eagerly look forward to watching each week's progress report. And so fun to see your personalities, skills, hobbies, interests develop along the way. I am continuing to renovate what will be my retirement home in NE Oregon and really struggle with deciding which project needs to be the next priority...gambling on such factors as weather, availability of helping hands, gathering the needed materials, etc. So naturally, I am empathizing with your challenges, celebrating your victories, learning from your experiences, and being inspired by your vision and tenacity.

You two are such an inspiration. You never let life's challenges get you down and the projects that you undertake are monumental. You always have such a "get it done" attitude. I just love how Todd made spending nights in the tent like an adventure that he looked forward to enjoying. Your energy and determination are awesome. I look forward to Sunday evenings with you.

You two are amazing!! How you find the energy to do what you do is incredible. Was so worried there’d be a giant ash cloud when you uncoupled the stove pipe but thankfully not. The dome is going to be soo cosy next winter! Have a great week! ❤️

That was a lot of work guys! I was sweating just watching you! I would get a larger ceiling fan though, maybe something industrial size. During the winter you have it blow down, so the hot air circulates down, and during the summer reverse it to blow up drawing the hot air up. This might help regulate the temp a little better. What kind of AC are you using to cool the dome? Have you thought about Geothermal HVAC too heat and cool your home, and the dome? It basically uses the constant temp of the earth to heat or cool your place and uses less electricity to do so. The initial cost of installation is the big thing, but check it out if you haven’t already. Let us know if you ruled it out already too. I would be curious why and to know what you do plan to use. As always, it was a joy watching you again this week. Keep up the great work. See you next week!

I just love all the improvements you did this week. With the heat it must have been so hard to work as you did. I'm sure the manufacurer will find something so that the air can get out. As usual you are so full of life and your love shines throuout the video. Have a great week, stay safe and find time for yourselves and the fur babies

What a tremendous project and how great it must feel to get that finished!! Of course, we can never avoid the unintended consequences. Wildly efficient insulation will definitely be a blessing for you come the cold months ahead. Once you manage the solar heating problem, you will probably see great cooling benefits as well. One thing we do here in the south is we can alternate the direction of our ceiling fans so that in the winter, it blows down the warm ceiling air and in the summer, it will pull up the rising hot air. Just a thought for you. Congratulations on such a great project. I wasn't sure about the khaki color but once everything is back in and the lights are on, I bet it will be great. (I was going to make a joke "being a representative of the fan industry, I resent the implication...blah blah blah etc." but I figure you deserve a break....lol) Great video!!
