there is a huge difference between sororities at large colleges (esp southern ones) versus small colleges. i was president of my sorority at a college with less than 5k students, and it was genuinely a wonderful experience that lives up to all of the promises sororities usually make. but BOY did the girls from larger chapters have stories

Came here to say similar, I went to a massive public university in the northern Midwest. The support I got and the friendships I made are what’s gotten me through not just college, but life after. We had GPA and charity requirements that helped me stay on track. I didn’t experience negative things like this, but heard about this type of stuff from southern and some coastal universities.

Stooop I love this story I went to Highschool with Rebecca 😂😂 Ok further into the video, she wasn’t a drama kid but she was in band!! She wasn’t a really popular girl in hs she was somewhat quiet and kept to her small group of friends who were mostly in band. This was honestly such a shock to everyone that grew up with her but for girl has a way with words 🤭🤭

Greek life is wildly different depending on which school you went to. There's a reason its Bama Rush specifically that went viral. My sister was in a sorority at a private tech school, and it was an incredibly chill experience to what you see from the big state schools. Mostly because they only had a handful of sorotities and fraternities, and also because the type of people who go to private tech schools are not the same type of people who do Bama Rush.
@Mostie-ev7oh18 күн бұрын
I think also it depends on just if there’s actual Greek Life houses too. Because my sister’s university has Greek life but there’s only one old house and it’s owned by a frat.

There were rumors on UA campus that sorority pledges would get pulled out of bed in the middle of the night, forced to sit on top of a washing machine in their underwear, and have anything that "jiggles" circled with a sharpie and ordered to get rid of it (which Tyler highlighted for a sec but dang).

Praying for you and everyone you know Tyler! My sister lives in LA and is currently at my house because of the fires so please stay safe! I just realized there's a glee quote in there. Season 4, Brie, the mean cheerleader tells Kitty "You have 51 weeks out of the year to love your sisters from Glee Club, and this week is not - I repeat, NOT - one of them. This week is about winning Prom Queen for Cheerios, and that's not gonna happen if you're off campaigning for Kimchi Cohen-Barf or whoever." Also in that same monologue "Are you an idiot Kitty? That's not a rhetorical question. I literally want you to tell me if you're mentally slow so I can be sure you're not nominated for future prom courts." They literally copied this whole monolouge

As someone who went to a smaller D1 school, my sorority overall was less restrictive with appearances, so we were still allowed to dress and look like ourselves. However, one year during recruitment, our Recruitment chair sent my friend home to fix her hair because she wore it naturally curly. Mind you, my friend still used styling product to make sure it wasn't frizzy and it actually looked really good. What really sucked was the same recruitment chair allowed a girl who literally looked like she just rolled out of bed but had wavy hair stay. Honestly, how strict our appearances were was fully based on who was in charge each year.

There's definitely a real Serena Joy energy coming out of the sorority system. But I rushed a fraternity that was coed and made lifelong friendships (including my husband) so I know good things can come out of the Greek system. It seems like a lot of groups have some harmful base assumptions that we do not need, but if you find a good group it's awesome.

I was a foreign exchange student at a state uni about 10 years ago. I was like 20 and it was my third year at a university. During the first week there was a fair and all the sororities and fraternities were advertising themselves. They were encouraging us to rush and it sounded very nice: community, sisterhood, activities, connections... but as I was in my third year, I knew I didn't need to join a sorority to meet people. I was living in a dorm so of course there's people there. Do some sports, meet people. Go to a party, meet people. When you're living on campus, it's really not that hard. And when I heard how much it costs.... uffff no thanks

My experience with frat life is so weird and underwhelming in comparison to this particular version! I was actually a girl in a co-ed fraternity. I joined because I had transferred to a new school and wanted to make more friends. It did help me get more social but it also felt like being assigned extra homework on top of everything else. Probably the biggest difference is that we didn't all live in one house, we had meetings and parties. I was also told that my year wasnt treated as strictly as the previous so idk what I missed. I don't really keep in touch with anyone I met there

I joined a sorority around the time that email was sent 😂. It's a service sorority, so we were more focused on volunteering than socializing with other fraternities or sororities. I never felt pressured to look a certain way. "Don't mix alcohol and letters" was probably our biggest rule, so our "brand" wouldn't be the stereotypical drunk sorority girl. Overall I had a good experience and I'm still involved as an alumni. 😃

I honestly feel like you gave sorority life way way too much grace. It's not just "a little misogynistic" it's extremely misogynistic. It's beyond disgusting that they pick apart the appearances of freshman girls, sexually pressure them to engage with the fraternities, create a toxic "friend culture" etc. And that email seems funny but it's actually so dangerous. I've heard countless stories about girls who were were being harassed at a frat party and turned to one of their older sorority sisters to help them out only to have that sister get angry at them and tell them they need to just do what the guy wants so it doesn't make the sorority look boring. The thing is sororities like to maintain a certain reputation. Some focus on being good looking, some focus on being posh, and many want to have the "Fun sorority" reputation. And by fun they mean girls who like to do certain drugs and are more likely to hook up. So when girls in the sorority do something that contradicts that reputation (Such as saying no to a hook up or gaining some weight), they're scrutinized by their sorority sisters. I truly do not believe Greek life should be a thing. I think conceptually it can sound cool and fun but realistically it just grooms girls to build their self worth on male validation and popularity. Not to mention it completely strips you of your individuality. They all look the same and they all try to act a certain way to keep their reputation I think we need to acknowledge that just because something is fun for some people doesn't mean it should continue to be a thing.

I'm a Gen X'r who went to college in the late 90's, but I joined a sorority basically to meet people since I went to an out-of-state, fairly large college and didn't know anyone there. I quit after two years (most people do, tbh) but I remember it being mostly just boring and too expensive, with silly rules that I eventually grew tired of. However, I do remember Greek Week had a competition element that including earning points for the Blood Drive. And one sorority got in trouble and went "viral" (or what counted for viral in 1998, lmao) for an email where the President told the members to just "lie and give blood, I don't care if you shouldn't, we need the points." I can't say my experiences were negative beyond being mostly bored and it was too much $$$ --and I can't imagine how expensive it is NOW if it was pricey almost 30 years ago! It seemed like an outdated social organization back then, too, honestly. Loved the vid, as usual! Your channel was my fave find of 2024 :D

I feel like i got a healthy dose of the toxicity of a big school and the sisterhood of a small school. I made some life long friends, but i still felt like i was involved w highschool drama. Popularity still mattered when it shouldn’t have. The sorority status still mattered when it shouldn’t have. What frats thought of us still mattered when it shouldn’t have. It felt like a full time job on top of school and you had to pay to be there. In my experience (going to uni in a conservative part of Fl) most ppl who join sororities are conservative and come from families who were generationally conservative. I think most girls who are in a sorority agree with/understand the darker aspects of the sorority and accept it. They definitely interact with other students who aren't in a sorority and see the difference in lifestyle, but still chose to be in a sorority. I don't think girls who are in a sorority disagree with the misogynistic practices of sororities, they could easily leave but may just face social consequences I guess.
