Al Murray is improvising (mostly) within his Pub Landlord character, but the person himself has a Modern History Degree from Oxford University. I think the "who comes first" line (though not true because of Russia) was a double entendre, as was his talk of periods being full stop for men. (In Britain they call the punctuation at the end of a sentence a full stop, rather than a period). He asked for "someone from overseas", so I imagine he has material ready for people from other countries like Australia too. @Dharin.3 ай бұрын
Al Murry is improvising. He does this routine as "Al Murry. The Pub Landlord" which is why he has the bar, with working taps, on stage. He will pick a random audience member and ask a question, sometimes it's where you are from, sometimes something else and goes from there. The pub landlord character is an old British empire downfall be-moaner, who has the same old attitudes of the bygone age of empire and how we were once on top of the world. He has racist, misogynistic undertones, is slightly abrasive, and full of regret for the downfall of queen/king and country that all empire headed people have in abundance ofc. He is still holding onto the "glory" of being the most powerful nation on Earth, but is a part of the personality act of the landlord. He is so very funny. Ultimately, he is having a dig at the kind of people who won't let their feelings about the fallen British empire go. The feeling of superiority that comes to all nations when they are at the top. He is an exceptionally intelligent person, and he is taking far more fun out of the British than the victim in the crowd, who is from another country, and may not understand our inward looking humour at the attitudes of some older post war people born into empire, and saw it's downfall as it was. That's the measure of his comic genius. To take a certain mentality, and personality, with a backwards looking attitude and make light of it. If you understand this when you watch his comedy, then you can enjoy the act for what it is for he does not believe this, or act this way in real life, and like the majority of the rest of us "The Brits" can see just how ridiculous that way of thinking is, mix in some stereo types about the British and you have "The Pub Landlord" character. He can then have a dig at other nations for the things they are most proud of from what he see's as being equally bizarre, ridiculous, or just simply bonkers and not a dig at Americans per se, or anyone else for that matter. It's really about a man trapped in the memory of a nation who conquered the world, and lost it all, but still hold onto the feeling of superiority, as it's still within the lifetime of some still living today. Attitudes that should belong to history, still repeating themselves from the cultural perspective of this, or any nation. To really appreciate it, you have to understand our humour, and not be too woke. as they will get offended by saying toilet paper is white, instead of toilet paper is reflective of all colours, because we must be inclusive and not say anything that could be perceived as damaging to their sensibilities, and keep that negativity away from their delicate aura lol.

On the surface it seems like he’s mocking people from other countries, but in playing the Pub Landlord character he’s actually mocking a certain type of British person (Nationalist, biased, ignorant, bigoted, etc). I’m a fan of his routine but the problem with this kind of comedy is that a lot of people misinterpret it and take it too seriously. Because he’s so good at playing that character that many people think he actually is that character. You’re absolutely right about him being intelligent. Some might even say he’s too intelligent to play this kind of character because he plays it so convincingly that he now has fans who are actually like the character he’s satirising. But in reality Al is nothing like that character. He doesn’t actually like people like the character he’s playing. So nothing about it is real (including the beer, his accent, nationalist views, etc).

Alastair Murray is a quietly spoken, affable, history facts genius in everyday life. His ability to recall historical events is jaw dropping.

Al is a very intelligent , university educated man. His knowledge of history is vast. He is playing a character called THE PUB LANDLORD. PISSED in the UK means DRUNK. PERIOD in the UK means something VERY different !!

Al Murray is great, intelligent & a Historian. I've watched a number of American reactions reactions to Al Murray & they always go to this one first. However, it's never the last video reaction they do of Al Murray. Lot's more to come from the Pub Landlord!

We haven’t seen much TV content from Al Murray in a while. Hope he is still touring and doing well. Love his comedy as “pubLandlord”

Al Murray is awesome, but yeah there are LOADS of comedians from the UK that you need to check out. Dave Gorman, Rhod Gilbert, Frankie Boyle, Jimmy Carr (altho you might need to put on some offence armour for those two), Mickey Flanagan, Kerry Godliman... you'll be in for a great time with all of them
