Nice stuff. As both a seller and a buyer myself, the comps discussion on the buyer's side is a bit more nuanced than that IMO. There's a bit more cost to the buyer when they show up at a card show. Lots of card shows have admission prices to them, then there's parking, driving, and time. For example, I live where there are no card shows within two hours. When I go to a card show, it's basically an entire day's affair. The alternative is, as you said, but on the other side - I can browse/buy cards at home on eBay while browsing an essentially limitless selection, all while watching a baseball game. Also, I'd bet most buys at a card show are impulse buys - the buyer buys because they're there and the card looks attractive (cool-looking, profitable, whatever, etc.) to them at that moment. I'd say 90+ percent of my buys at card shows are cards that I otherwise probably wouldn't have sought-out if I didn't go to a card show. There's a cost to this for the seller: If you want to move inventory quick and get buyers to buy impulse buys, you have to pay a margin for that. Lots of cards that might sit for months (or not sell at all) on eBay can go easily at card shows. Then you have to factor in the seller's "effort cost" to putting each card on eBay versus a buyer picking out a thick stack from your value box without you doing much of anything, or a buyer suddenly eyeing a few extra slabs that they hadn't thought about buying before coming here. It's actually rare that I don't buy multiple cards from the same dealer at a card show. It's usually a stack of stuff or at least a few. Those are benefits to a seller that they have to pay a margin on.

buyers can also say its a convenience for sellers because they do not have to deal with returns. what I have noticed though is people pay more fair at shows than they do vesus facebook for example. Cannot hide behind a screen with a lowball offer.
@TylerShort9 ай бұрын
Yeah that's definitely true. That's really why I see splitting the ebay "savings" down the middle is probably the most fair thing to do. Instant gratification for both sides, risk reduced for both sides. Costs to both sides substantially higher when operating online.

Your take on percentage makes sense. However my only counter is that many dealers have burned bridges with people by only offering 60% to buy from people off the street.
@StargoeIncАй бұрын
I've only done 3 shows (one major) and so far have said "sorry I'm not buying today" since I'm new... however, my counter to you saying dealers offering only 60% are burning bridges is that you should try being a dealer. Most buyers are trying to get at 70% of comps, so even a dealer paying 60% means "they get" 10%... but even that isn't true and that dealer giving 60% could STILL be going into massive debt! Non inventory expenses alone at large shows is THOUSANDS of dollars dealers are paying, so anyone coming off the street thinking if a dealer offered $12 on a $20 that's a total rip off, it's really not because it's noooooo where near the dealer simply making $8 for a minute's work at all. (You also have to factor any legit dealer is going to pay sales tax on the sale so in places like Chicago that's an extra $2 on the $20 that's instantly eliminated and why anyone off the street thinking they should be getting 90% comps is 100% wrong). I'm actually thinking 60% is probably the right offer for most dealers based on: Knock off 10% because of sales takes brings it to 90%. Knock off 10-20 percent because nearly all buyers are negotiating that off and you're down to 70-80%.. then figure 10% profit is fair and you're at 60-70% is what should be offered and you didn't even consider the seller costs involved! (I can see an argument of the dealer paid the expenses anyway, but obviously those expenses should be paid from selling cards). How can you claim a legit dealer should be offering more than 60% when considering sales taxes + nearly all buyers are trying to get 25-30% off + all the expenses the dealer paid to sell at a show?

As a dealer, I immediately turn off compers at 75% for high end items. Keep walking.

Do you do any additional volume discounts for buyers?
@TylerShort9 ай бұрын
It kind of depends. Quite honestly, no. Reason? I've put a lot of time in effort to list every card meticulously online. Online, I can sleep and sell cards, I can click a few buttons and send to auction. I know what price I will get most of the time. Packing up all of my cases, traveling to the show, setting up, and haggling only to come away with a lower price than had I just stayed at home and done whatever I wanted, you can easily see which one of those two options sounds better. Have I given bulk discounts? Absolutely. Have I turned away many buyers wanting them? Yes. At some point it has to be worth your time to pack all of your stuff, pay ridiculous table fees, and try to come out ahead better than if you stayed at home

I’d say it’s very safe to assume the reason for this is Flippers. But I also don’t see why that’s bad. I only see that as not bad simply because, how busy would these shows be with only collectors? How much sales would these dealers make with only collectors? What would cards be worth with only collectors? Clearly in the mid / early 2010s we saw what a market with only collectors looks like… TERRIBLE.
@TylerShort9 ай бұрын
At the end of the day, I do not care what the buyer is doing with the card (just don't use Kurts! haha). Negotiation conversation had nothing to do with the problem with flippers. I flip, A LOT. The negotiation part is meant to define a "fair" deal between buyer and seller in person. Flippers, by and large, do not want a fair deal, they want the cheapest deal when operating as a buyer. Dealing with them can be obnoxious. It's part of it but I outline what should be considered fair regardless of buyer classification

It seems like you’re not the 1 to shop with/at. Don’t know what you pay for your inventory, but with such a stonewall around the 2-3%, you must lose a lot of deals. Something going for a hundred is most likely bought for half (or there about). So mixing up a Con/show with a shop, seems stupid. Yes you have to pay tax, but you’re also there to sell more than a day in your store aswell as unloading stuff that’s hard to sell alone or in bulk online. When I sell (vintage Star Wars/toys, footballcards (real football 😏), Lego) I won’t sell much if I expect buyers to see me as a firm, price stickers on, mall shop. Kinda the point that it’s much easier to haggle in person than on eBay. So many more options, for stuff to ad to the “bulk” etc. with the entire “battery” in place. Don’t bring certain sure sellers, if they can sell at any given time online/shop. Bring things you ain’t quite sure about, in the higher price range. You want to sell it, and no other place is more suited for this “adventure”. But if you buy your stuff at 85 to flip for a 100, then the concept is gone. On the other hand, iron will! Makes it easier for the rest of us 😉 Another thing, don’t be affraid of throwing in some free stuff, be generous. Not as in they’ll come back, or you get a better rep.. But people see and here it. Nothing better than a feel good bubbel around your tables. Have tried it so many times. Giving a discount (pref. a bit loud) and some1 new is stepping up to the “plate” right away, cause this s**t is contagious. All your stuff bout having what peeps want, sounds good but kinda impossible to keep up, if the good stuff is sold in a jiffy..then what? The hole point of being a seller, is to be able to flip hardly flipable stuff! In regards to Street Smart, then it’s something you’re born with!

@MC-un1nx9 ай бұрын
There's only two people who have any incentive to ever sell below 80% though and it's obvious......: Cash poor, or felony tax evasion, which I suppose has just always been a not insignificant part of the hobby. If someone's selling consistently to people who never pay above 80%, 95+% of the time it's because they're engaging in tax fraud or they're a broke degenerate ripper/gambler.
