I used to use this 3m stretchy rubber membrane tape at work years ago. It was like 500$ a roll and it was soo sticky that it would rip pretty much the whole 1/8th inch layer off of plywood or the paint off of walls. I learnt the other day that packaging is often designed to optimise the space in shipping containers. A product package might seem illogical when you open it, but when boxed up in multiples in the brown cardboard boxes, they form a standard size that will fit, in multiples, on a wooden pallet, which is in turn sized to minimise the wasted space in the shipping container. So the box for the instructions is mostly there as a filler to stop the tape moving in the box. Imagine the effect of over 10,000 rolls in 3,500 sales packages, all packed on a wooden pallet if they were free to roll a couple of inches. It could make the pallet unstable. The size of the packaging was the smallest standard form size that would contain the rolls, without having to get the packaging company to make a new custom cutting die for a slightly smaller box.

What all these test videos forget is that just like alot of adhesives this tape works alot better after it's had some time to set in. They can also sometimes work far better when clamped into place for an extended period of time and not just pushed on with a few pounds of pressure. I say this knowing that it's not always the case but I have used double sided Gorilla tape (i believe that was the brand) but when it failed the first time after loading the shelf right after I put a weight against it for an entire day and it feels like it's bolted to the wall now.

Looks like a giant version of the adhesive inside 3M strips. They instruct to wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol, press together firmly for a total of 60 seconds, and let wall-connected strips cure for 1 hour, removing the object and its connected strips on it for that curing time. You can't do that ofc because this is a one, not two-piece solution, but you can support the object for longer and/or use clamps. You might get better results, but also might not haha. Even the 3M strips say not to hang high value items, or over your bed headboard (ow!), and I've seen them, albeit very rarely, fail over time on heavier objects. Anyway just some context, great vid as usual!

This stuff works best on closed surfaces like tiles, glass, you name it. It also requires quite an amount of initial pressure - the more, the better it works sticks. After applying the tape, give it some time to "suck in" and also relax. Given that it is pretty thick and does not bond chemically, I would not advise to hang a shelf or anything "mission critical".
@Timmothy20124 жыл бұрын

You weren't I'm sorry to say. I have some. His problem is he's not using it properly nor does he understand how it works. He's using it like an adhesive tape. It's not adhesive and it's not meant to be permanent. It's able to release the surface it's bonded to and be reused because it's like velcro on the nanoscale. It peels apart when a moment is applied to pull edges away from each other. You have to orient it properly for best results.
@michaelclerkin89783 жыл бұрын
Glueing parallel to the grain on your plywood made the strength of the tape weaker since the tape was pulling slivers of wood off. You're depending on the integrity of the plywood as well as how sticky the tape is which compromises the test a little. Taping a shelf to drywall will give you better results.
@doranselwyn86082 жыл бұрын
Right because some who doesn't want to make a nail hole is going to want to peel off the paint. What a useful test that would be.
@jasonbrammer53724 жыл бұрын
You really need to revisit this. The instructions actually address some things you tried. For instance, it says that any application over painted surfaces or sheet rock are permanent. Also, they suggest applying pressure for 15 seconds on initial application, and then another 15-30 seconds when attaching the object to the tape. You were a bit more hasty. Furthermore, it goes on to say not to use on surfaces that are not even. You could see when attaching to the wood (and the shelf) you didn't have 100% contact as they direct. You would need to sand the wood down to be smooth before it would be an honest test Finally, the surfaces must be clean before you attach it. So their reusable claim may still hold up if you follow the instructions. Lets be clear, I'm just as dubious about its efficacy as you, but you test results are just as dubious :)

Hey bud great vids. What do you think would work best to repair a long rip down the edge of a nylon type camping tarp? Opinion? Everything I'm trying doesn't stick well to the tarp

the box with instructions is for packaging reasons, otherwise with 3 rolls in a square or rectangular package, there would be movement by the 3rd roll of tape in shipping. it is just there to make sure the tape remains stationary for shipping.

For the weights on the shelf. Did you wipe off the make shift wall with a barely damp rag to get any dust that may make it harder to stick. Helps alot.

Which strongest 1mm tape would you recommend to stick clips for silicone cases of cell phone?

It might be good in the rc hobby to hold esc and receivers.

better off just using industrial grade double sided tape for that, especially if you're looking for something permanent. I used the stuff to add LED strips in my computer case, and it's been holding after 5 years. This stuff is basically the exact same stuff but way more expensive and way lower quality, it just shows the power of marketing.

" _They put a box in here for the instructions?_ " That's $7.42 right there.

I would say, for a shelf, you need a 90° L to allow enough surface area for the tape to adhere.

I got some, played around with it and got a good idea of how it works and how strong it is. The claims are over the top, but if you use it right it's a pretty amazing product. And I found that if I use a heat gun to heat it up it really helps. It's only as strong as the bond you get right at the start. Similar to that clear stuff they used on junk mail when you'd get a letter with a penny or nickle in the window.

I'm a truck driver, I've used it to hold the dog bowl to the floor. To hold the inside door panel up till I put the screws back in, third hand. To seal a window closed, water tight. True high price. But it does work better than duck tape or anything else for the most part. It has its unique uses.

You should try doing a control group, like if you also screwed the shelf in and checked how much that can hold

I've seen similar results on other youtube channels. About the shower soap holder though. If the holder gets directly sprayed with water and especially if any of the soap makes contact with the tape, it will come down really fast. Maybe steam and air moisture won't do it but direct hit will.

you should try hammering the shelf to the wall for the best chances and put it on a smoother surface

When it comes to product testing, you've three real choices. TylerTuber: semi-chaotic, numbers are non existent, beard FreakinReviews: more organized, numbers for things that conventionally have measurements, goatee ProjectFarm: Sheogorath's personal enemy, numbers out the wazoo, midnight shade or less.

Used 3M double sided tape to hold plastic holders to a wodden cabinet. 3M failed afterr about Six Months. Cleaned the surfaced, and stuck Alien Tape on. Failed in less than 24 hours. Tried to peel the tape off. It came off with difficulty like snot. So much for peeling of to reuse.

Try washing it in Dawn soap. You can use that to make the "stretchy sticky hands" toy sticky again after it gets dirty, whereas using just water to rinse it off doesnt do much

The box for the instructions is not so much for the instructions, it's more so there to provide padding to ensure the product is not rattling or moving around inside the packaging. Since there's only 3 rolls of tape in the packaging, the 'instructions box' takes up the 4th space. This is very common in most modern packaging, especially smart phones.
