I havent been on the market for a few years but back in the 80/90s i used to come up for the weekend and go see my Nana and my last chore before heading home on a weekend to Doncaster was to pop the market and go and get her some kippers . Left Newcastle in 1980. used to gan doon the quay when I could. I was younger then, I always loved it though. I remember hawkers selling their wares." Ladies and Gentlemen come see what I got". I remember vividly the last thing I bought there. A whole box (I think 48 bags to the box) of TUDOR cheese and onion crisps when I was visiting home around 1988? I know Tudor got bought out a later I believe. I will be coming back next year for probably my last time and definitely pop on down. Thanks for everything you (and the mrs do ).👍

I remember back when I arrived in Newcastle in 2010, the market wasn't doing so well especially in the autumn / winter period, I wasn't sure it was going to make it. But it somehow recovered and became huge ! The recently installed food corner is thriving now. David Nash's Leather is an absolute institution in the Quayside market, but I believe's he's been poorly for a few weeks now. Bought loads from him over the years. I remember the queue for the German Bratwurst nearby too.

Went quite a bit in the early 80s. There used to be a stall that sold bootleg cassettes of live gigs from the city hall. They must have took a cassette recorder into the gig and recorded the concert, then made loads of copies to sell at the market. Some of the sound quality was shocking, but some were surprisingly good quality.

Thanks for the memories, I used to live in Byker in the 70's and my mum would take me down there every couple of Sundays, the biggest treat for me then was a ice cream cone with a chocolate flake in it. I used to have an ice cream regardless of the weather, then we would walk back along the river home. There used to be a art market on Jesmond bridge that we would go to as well, I wonder if that is still there. I moved to the states back in the late 90's and I'll be visiting Newcastle in the new year, first time I have been back since 98' I'm sure I will be in for a big surprise.

Used to go there early/ mid 60s. Can't actually remember much about what was there except the escapologist in a strait jacket & chains. There certainly wasn't the range of food stalls, maybe a Keenan's hot dog, burger cart though we'd usually be home in time for Sunday dinner by 1:30. Great to see food, arts & crafts & NUFC products thriving. Apparently there really was a Paddy's Market. (Remember yer mam "It's like Paddy's Market in here!!" when ye'd made a right mess.😂❤

Hi Eddy and Helen, Des here again, the Quayside market doesn't seem to have changed much since I was a kid, just the stores and the people. It is obviously a lot cleaner and safer than back then. My story goes back to the late 40's when I was about 8 or 9, I played hookey from Sunday school at our church (Bible education for young kids). Wandered around for a couple of hours not doing anything constructive, went back home and that was when I got into trouble. Remember this was in the day when a phone was for the rich people. It must have been ESP but my family, mainly my granny had heard about it, I got a licking from her that I still think about today. Corporal punishment was alive and well back then. Whenever I think about it, I can still feel her bony hands on my backside. Moral of the story, Don't mess with Granny. Thanks again for a beautiful memory of my Geordie chillhood.
