Japan is still under the effects of a treaty they signed after the 2nd war. It's a consequences that prohibits japan to create, build and even operate an offensive military force. But the japanese government has been bending and seeking loopholes from this treaty to modernize their "defense force". Js Izumo here is an example. It's named a frigate since a frigate is an escort ship and not an attack ship.

Ticonderoga class, for example is not a Cruiser. Sure, it may be designated a Cruiser, and have the 'functions' of a Cruiser, but it is not. it's either a Super-Frigate or a Super Heavy Frigate - since Destroyers had a specific offensive task in WWII, while also including an escort task for major capital warships...or a convoy. Cruisers on the other hand, in WWII often joined up with other capital warships for offensive tasks, primarily - surface raiding, or hunting down other capital warships. they were used as more solitary units by themselves - because they had more stores, greater range. lastly, Cruisers had armament and more armor; which basically says that they are meant for surface warfare almost exclusively, but had air and anti-sub defenses just in case. the only remaining Cruisers in existence is the Kirov-class.

Kirovs are Battle Cruiser’s old boy…they are of Capital ship grade quality in size and armament and only 50 feet shorter then a Iowa. Most cruisers of late are light cruisers and don’t even come close to the heavy cruisers class of 20,000 tons. A Kirov is 28,000 tons so well over twice the size of a cruisers displacement.

Considering the type 055 role in the PLAN navy's carrier battle group, it could potentially be called a cruiser in western standards (again, there are still ridiculous examples like germans designating their 8000 tonned F125 ships as frigates). However, unlike the Ticonderoga class, the ship is not know to serve any dedicated roles in the battlegroup and preforms very similar antiship and air defence roles like it's predecessors. Destroyer leaders, large destroyers and super destroyers are kind of a middle ground between cruisers and destroyers, its description is rather vague since you can classify these ships as either of them, Nanchang fits in this ambiguous category of ships. Weight wise the type055 would be comparable to the light cruisers of ww2 and slightly heavier than the Ticonderoga class cruisers. Length wise it would be around the length of helicopter carriers(such as the hyuga class, chakri naruebet, IT trent etc.) and slightly longer than us cruisers but still smaller than russian cruisers(slava/kirov class). I'd like to hear from your opinions since the results is still inconclusive.

It is said to have built-in facilities to command a battlegroup and would probably be classified as a cruiser in the USN. It has heavy anti-surface, anti-aircraft armament and also the displacement equivalent to a Russian cruiser, allowing it to have the power and endurance to strike out on its own. So it would probably be classified as a cruiser in the Russian Navy. It would probably be classified as a destroyer in the Japanese Navy because the Japanese like to classify anything bigger than a trawler as destroyer. It would probably be classified as a cruiser by the British because the British just hasn't got one anymore.

If Korean Sejong the Great-class is considered a destroyer with 10k tons full displacement, 128 VLS cells and 16 anti ship missiles, then Type 055 with its 112 VLS cells are rightfully classified as destroyers.

Sejong VLS is misleading, half of those are actually short range missile defence due to it need to operate close to the DMZ. the Type 055 VLS are alot bigger than those short range VLS, in fact each of it VLS can carry 4 short range missile. the Type 055 firepower is therefore more than double that of the Sejong.

If this had AN/SPY-6 and Brahmos cruise missiles together with Tomahawk and LRASM for antiship and land attack roles, with SM-3 for ballistic interceptor and SM-6 and SkyCeptor missiles for air defense this would be the world's deadliest destroyer.

@@dadidadida123 Its Type 346 radar is ok, but its not the best. So to itz weapons. In terms of antiship missiles, its YJ-18 is outranged. It also dont have a longer range air defense interceptor.
