I've only heard Type O Negative a couple times so far, but have been enamored by Peter Steele's vocal stylization. So when I heard a new AI video was being developed for their "Halloween in Heaven" to be released on World Goth Day, I just had to give this a listen!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Type O Negative performing "Halloween In Heaven" for the first time.

I saw Type O Negative open for Pantera in 1995. During Type O's set, people threw produce (mostly lettuce) up on stage. Phil came out and Type O performed Kill All the White People with Phil on vocals. Later, during Pantera's set, Pete came out on stage with a push broom and swept up all the produce that had been thrown at his band while Pantera was shredding and kicking ass. One of my favorite live music moments.

I can't believe Dimebag was taken from us almost 20 years already, I'll never forget that day when my friend turned up to tell me the news and I was refusing to believe it. I was in college, I'm a music major/guitarist....been playing for 20 years at this point, but back then I had only just started, and Dimebag was one of a few reasons/influences; it was a sombre day for all of us there...goths, punks, metalheads, MCs/rappers...all paid tribute in some way. I think it says something when, no matter what genre/scene someone might be in--they know/knew who Dimebag was. A true legend.

Yup, Type O Negative did have the occasional uptempo, thrash type of tune here and there. Peter’s previous band Carnivore was a total hardcore thrasher outfit, but he admitted he grew tired of constant screaming and wanted to do melodic singing. And it’s of course a good thing he did. But I never knew that there was any connection to Dimebag’s murder with this song. Very respectful and admirable, that Peter kept that bit undercover. Excellent Goth look, by the way. Takes me back to when I wore the stuff everywhere, even to work. People basically thought I looked like The Crow or a vampire. Got some interesting questions from strangers because of that. Those were the days.

Great analysis, except one small detail which also got me confused the first time I listened to them: Most of the pre-chorus and chorus is actually Kenny Hickey, the lead guitarist singing. There were at least 2-3 songs on every album where he sang a bridge or something, but Peter had such a wide vocal range it´s sometimes hard to differentiate the two. The more gutural stuff in other songs and the choirs is Josh Silver their keyboard player. As major Beatles fans it makes sense that they would switch vocal duties now and then (although Pete still sang the majority of their stuff)

I was supposed to go, but I had to work that night. My friends said it was an epic show. I did manage to see Pantera with the Reinventing the Steel tour a few years later, but I never got to see Type O Negative. Thank you for doing this tribute to dimebag. I can’t stress enough how awesome Dime Bag Darrell was. He was the master of simple rhythmic guitar riffs. You should do The Sleep. By Pantera. Crazy riffs by Dime. And absolutely one of the most microphone shredding songs Phil has ever done. So many good Pantera songs. Might be a tad heavier than the usual metal on here. There’s a reason why it’s so highly regarded by metal heads. One of my favorite metal bands ever. Tied for first place with Mega Deth on my metal list haha.

Just FYI, Kenney Hickey sang those compressed parts, the guitarist. I always loved when Pete and Kenny would trade off vocals.

Never heard it in so fascinating way! Thanks for the great time! Please consider Danzig for your next video. His amazing baritone to tenor vocal range stands him out of the rock crowd, still emphasized by the lyrics darkness. There's iconic How the Gods Kill, and also Her Black Wings to note. Thanks!

*_You still need to listen to Type O Negative's cover of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid", it's one of their best covers._* *_And listen to this on a real stereo, one of those that are called "Hi-Fi or High End"._* _"The remastered 1994 reissue of "The Origin Of The Feces" also included a bonus cover track of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" (which also contains the main riff of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" midway through). This cover was originally recorded for inclusion on the 1994 compilation album "Nativity in Black: A Tribute to Black Sabbath" however it was scrapped from the project when a more prominent band_ (i.e the assholes Megadeth) _signed on and requested they perform "Paranoid" on the album. As a result, Type O Negative was forced to record another Black Sabbath song in order to be included on the tribute album. The band settled on the song, "Black Sabbath" itself and ironically Black Sabbath themselves were very impressed with Type O Negative's take on the song. Original Black Sabbath drummer, Bill Ward cited Type O Negative's performance as his favorite from the album."_ *_The Origin Of The Feces has 2 Album Covers, one is Peter's Best Side, the other one is the 1498 woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse(4 skeleton's dancing). The Paranoid cover is on the album version with the dancing skeletons._* *_On the TON compilation album, "The Least Worst Of", the version of Black Sabbath is sung with Peter's own lyrics, from the perspective of Lucifer._* Edit: I typed Dürer wrong.

This song is so good and catchy, but it makes me so sad. As many have said, the "It's Chrismas in Hell-ell-ell" etc., is all the guitarist Kenny Hickey. Once you pick up his voice, you'll realize that Kenny sang a LOT of the upper register type choruses for Type O. He also sings the chorus lead on "September Sun" on this album, which IMO is one of the most underrated Type O Negative songs. Kenny has a few of his own bands he sings lead in. Formerly Seventh Void, and now Silvertomb. Johnny Kelley the drummer for Type O Negative is in both.

All these years I just thought Peter Steele had an amazing range (which he still does) until I saw a live performance of the song Profits of Doom and I was blown away that it was Kenny singing the other vocal parts. Then I went down the rabbit hole.

Awesome to hear and see more Type O on here, EZ! (Love the goth look on you, btw 👍🏻). I am forever grateful I got to see the band live, even though it was a very brief set, at 2pm on a blazing hot sunny day at Donington Monsters of Rock in ‘96 (the final MoR festival before it took a break and came back as Download). They only played four songs (45 minute set lol) and the last one they did was their version of Paranoid…the next band of the day was back on the main stage (ToN were on the 2nd stage), and it was Ozzy Osbourne 😂 So many ToN songs I could suggest for reactions but I shall limit myself and say Wolf Moon, Black No1 (an old band I was bass and vocals in covered that one, great fun) and/or Christian Woman…All Hallows Eve would be great for Halloween this year and maybe Christmas Mourning for later on in December…😉😁🤘🏻

Happy Goth Day from New England...This feels more like a punk tune to me..Pete sounds so charged up and is singing with such gusto...And that drum groove is ten miles long..As a drummer this is something we'd play 3/4 of the way thru the set to ramp up the energy for the end of the show 🤘✌️

What's cool about Type O is that both Peter and Kenny (guitarist) sing lead, but they also both scream at times, too. Kenny's screaming out "It's Christmas in Hell, Hell, Hell!" and, for example, Peter screams "Decorated in Souls..." and "As him below..." Not to mention the time signature changes and transitions. Type O was one of my favorite bands.
