We'll look at the classic 5 Types of hand Gestures in nonverbal communication. Researchers Ekman and Friesen developed this research on gestures in 1968 and these have been foundational parts of how we understand gestures to this day. They are:

Response to the Question of the Day: Having this information in our mental repository rings in the bell at PRICELESS. These are essential to the fluid and coherent interactions that we have with strangers on the street, acquaintances, friends, and our intimate relationships with significant others as well as family. Countless interactions that we have every single day. I do hold that children should be taught about communication at an earlier time, such as in elementary, a specific class which covers it (why the first time we have the ability to really delve into it in most school systems... usually in high school or college when it occurs every single day, is something in the realm of a let down of the education system). To answer your question a bit more thoroughly, I do think that this information is practical. Rather that might be communication as a whole because anyone who is able to hold themselves and function in society and in the daily interactions they have without severe backlash or incoherence, inevitably has picked up on these hand gestures. While many may notice the hand gestures, and others still oblivious on the conscious level, people will utilize them in situations which call for them. This, as you mentioned, occurs subconsciously. The specific SYSTEM/CATEGORIES and the classification of these hand gestures cleans them up in our conceptualization of gestures. Offering a bit of clarity as well as internally organizing. Will the majority of the population require this system/category? Honestly, probably not. Unless you are of the percentage of the population in which cares and pays acute attention to the many facets of communication. So it falls into a situational thing on if this information is practical or not. Personally, I found it helpful, as intuitively I knew what these were, just have never come across this linguistic conceptualization of the categories. (ie... I had not refine or sharpened my internal when it came to hand gestures in day to day communication) Anyone who would be looking to better themselves, to improve their own awareness of how they are presenting and expressing themselves, and conversely how others may be perceiving them, would benefit from this knowledge. We can go our entire lives never paying attention to our interactions with others, but that might not best serve us in our productivity or effectiveness in life (for, when it comes to interacting with others, in an interdependent society, when are we not communicating and interacting? VERY RARELY). Improve our clarity of communication and accuracy of that which we aim to convey. Perhaps it comes down to whether a fixed, or a growth mindset is applied. I'm not so sure about that. About 95% of listeners/viewers prefer a good amount of gestures. The remaining 5% don't like gestures at all in almost any amount. In other words, it is much better to use gestures. When communicators do not gesture, they get labeled low energy. I love this quotation from Abraham Lincoln about using gestures and a speaker's energy level, "When I hear a man preach, I like to see him act as if he were fighting bees."
