Interesting intellectual exercise Pete! If I could be so bold as to offer another category of enthusiast I often observe - the contrarian (those collectors who reject out of hand specific brands/categories of timepieces and or prevailing watch tropes - the collective wisdom/group think of the community as it were)

There’s a major type of collector called “obsessive and compulsive”

Pete another great watch topic. This is what sets your channel apart from most other watch channels - creative, thought provoking watch topics. Thanks. And, I am a combination of watch enthusiast similar to your styles - mainly aesthete and herald, for me with a hint of the other types. Take care and stay safe,

Great video, Pete! These are interesting categories & I totally agree that we are all, in one way or another, likely different combinations of these things. Overall, I think there's one set of ideas that tends to shape (or regulate) all the thinking in the watch community. The ideas aren't always interpreted in the same way & they certainly aren't valued in the same way by different individuals (... or in different situations). But I think that if we looked over a pool of watch reviews or debates or just KZbin watch content in general, we'd see certain core ideas (or, actually, modes of thinking) that tend to crop up again & again. I think this video tackles that topic in a really interesting way.

Great video Pete. I would classify myself an aesthetic engineer. I find beauty in the engineering is what attracts me to a watch.

As a cyclist, when on group rides, there is usually one rider we call a squirrel! They jump from lane to lane without warning. It’s very dangerous for all involved. That’s me in my watch buying habits! 😂 Not only do I buy based on numerous factors but the emphasis on what is most important to me changes with the watch. I suspect I’m not alone. 😊 Thanks for another great discussion!

Another great video. I think I'm the asthete, the look of the watch pretty much trumps everything for me.

What drives our decisions in any field is always interesting and watch collecting (for want of a better word) is so reflective of peoples' personality. For me, the aesthetics come first, but have to be supported by the craft, heraldry, engineering and accountancy (generally in that order). That said the order will vary depending on the type of watch (a diver's engineering is more important than it's craft). Finally, while it's easy to deny any socialite tendencies, I've gotta be honest and admit that yes, other peoples' opinions (a handful of people who's opinion I value) do matter, but I don't do all that Insta watch jazz, so not all that much!

I am probably a mix of 5 of those characertistics, to the exclusion of the socialite, as I really could not care less about watches as a status symbol. In order of importance: 1) aesthete 2) craftsman 3) engineer 4) accountant 5) herald

I guess I am 5% accountant and 95% aesthete. The accountant says this is an appropriate watch for the price. This is why I say that a watch that costs X should have Y features. So, if you're going to charge more than, say $800 for a watch it should have a quick release strap/bracelet AND a push button (or similar tool-free mechanism) micro-adjust and most likely a swiss movement. The aesthete says I like the way this watch looks on me and bugger the price. Two classes you missed or that might be rolled into other definitions 1 - The didact: You have to own this to be a real watch collector. (This is possibly too polite.) 2 - The scientist - looks for innovation in materials or mechanisms and is excited by new ways of doing things (I might belong within this definition). Thank you for spelling aesthete properly.

Same :) I go for the aesthetics and pretty much that alone, but I'm not paying £10k for aesthetics if it doesn't 'value' to me at that price (or any price for that matter, hence the accountant)

I would love to see a series of videos detailing examples of each enthusiast. Also, I think you missed the “functionality” or “tool” enthusiast. People who enjoy using and collecting watches for their purpose. You could add “memories” or “experience” in the same category.

It is very hard to put people in boxes. Watch enthusiast categories are as broad as the enthusiasts themselves. For emaple I don't like "vintage inspired watches", "iconic simplicity watches", "stealth wealth watches", "understated watches", watches that "get lost on the wrist". I like striking watches, stand out watches, conversation pieces, larger watches ( I have a 7.7 inches wrist), watches you won't forget and original designs. I also don't like in-house movements, because I live in a poor country on the outskrits of Europe and those watches I would not be able to service here. One feature that is very important to me, together with the striking looks and original design, is durability, because I want to leave my watches to my son no matter if he keeps them, wears them, sells them, gives them away or whatever. It is very hard to find a category form me, for example.

Very interesting discussion. I have always felt as an outsider. I love the tech, but prefer analog watches. I love function, like chronographs, but like smaller sizes. I like automatics, but also my eco-drives. I stepped into vostok for tough automatics. The komenderskie died in less than a year. The amphibia is still going, we will see how tough they really are. I have killed a couple g-shocks, so not a surprise. I am exited to see where I fall. Pretty sure it is engineer, as I look at features and function before value and esthetics. *wearing my 20 year old citizen eco-drive chrono. Titanium, 10 bar, has been flawless for near two decades.

Pete, I haven't seen you mention Nomos before. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the brand, I thought you'd have been a fan.

I've never quite got into Nomos - a glashutte brand that is very unglashutte- their design being more northern, more Brandenburg than Saxony. Nothing against the brand, but its just not caught my imagination and held it.

On reflection I think you missed out on the romantic, someone who buy a watch because of its history. Look at the popularity of reissues of class dive watches.

Personally I think the compulsive addictive is certainly commonplace.. spent 10 years where I was addicted . Spent a whole lot of cash amassed a lot of expensive watches but never felt overly comfortable feeling that I was being controlled. Over thinking everything and putting so much energy into something that i now view as somewhat superficial. I’ve come out the other end and to my surprise now largely disinterested and no longer even wear a watch so they sit in the box unloved and at some point I will ship them out . I feel that my head was consumed by mush for a lot of years . I believe there is a thin line between hobby and addiction..

There may be a group of people who enjoy the audible and tactile parts of a watch. I for example dislike the sound of ETA/Selitta movements when they are manually wound. It sounds to me like there is sand inside the movement.

I'm a bunch of these types. I'm definitely the Accountant, though not interested in resale or profits. I see money as a resource, and I weigh how I spend that resource. I see a lot of luxury good priced for the socialite, and that's absolutely not me. I prefer to operate under the radar in life. I am The Herald at times, being a corporate "story teller" be profession. I am drawn to the craftsman and the engineer, but I'm neither skilled nor technical enough to always get that stuff. BTW, did you now that Jung married into the family that owned IWC? Mild irony.

Nice take on the community! I'm probably an accountant and engineer hybrid most of the time, but not exclusively. Caseback Watches did a similar take on types of watch collectors. It was quite funny. Have a look at it if you can find the time.
