He's a shining example of deep innovation brought to rock/metal by jazz musician - as he was starting from studying/playing jazz. My hypothesis is: any further substantial innovation in rock/metal will be brought from the jazz teritory, not only by influences but by "jazz as such", by its musical DNA. There were plenty of metal band profiting from jazz, from Atheist and Death to Coroner, but the NYC based band named Imperial Triumphant is the deepest cut so far - it is literally "black jazz" more than "black metal".
