Discussing smog delete issues that come up on mid-1980s import vehicles which had computer controlled carburetors, the worst combination of technology used on the tail end of automotive industry use of carburetors while electronic fuel injection was being phased in as industry standard. This specifically is the Isuzu 4ZD1 motor with US market retrofits in a custom configuration. This was sold under Subaru, Chevrolet and Holden brand names in foreign markets. Parts compatibility is a hodgepodge of GM, Ford, Isuzu and some Nissan components. The 1984-1987 model is as shown, the 2.6 liter version starting in 1988 came with fuel injection but many owners continue to retrofit them to carburetor/smog delete/header setups using manifolds scavenged from earlier models found at junkyards. Many parts remained interchangeable between the 2.3 and 2.6 4ZE1 motors.
Typical regulations on this type of work require a smog exemption due to the age of the vehicle and or installation of an aftermarket upgrade catalytic converter (which this vehicle has).
